the text is true but the drawing is weird. each individual life is finite. each individual death-state is also finite. but theres presumably an infinite number of them, since the death-state clearly gives rise to the life-state and vice-versa.

however the devil may be in the details, since i see no clear correlation between "my" previous death-state and my current life-state. or "my" previous life-states, for that matter. they seem to be entirely independent as far as i can tell. likewise the nature of the consciousness which appears to inhabit me is unknown. and depending on the cosmology you subscribe to, the universe may well be keeping a tally or not. we simply don't know these things and cannot know them. so while the idea in principle stands, the consequences thereof may not be nearly as spectacular as it may seem. and by itself it answers few questions.
>>
>>42830862
It can easily be refuted via thought experiment. Imagine that medical technology had the ability to revive people long after they died. If you reincarnated after death, and then were brought back to life in your original body, then you would be inhabiting TWO separate consciousnesses.

There is no "soul transfer mechanic" that transfers you from one first-person perspective to another. Reincarnation cannot be justified unless you introduce extra metaphysical baggage, like the existence of souls.
>>
>>42830914
its possible that the brain is simply a receiver for a sea of consciousness. also we dont know how long that time stretch of death is. it may take as long as it takes for another universe to be created. we dont know how life arises from a death-state, we just know that it does. it may not even be a biological life for all i know.

Life is an illusion and death is the timeout of that illusion. This was already solved thousands of years ago when India was actually a white country.
>>
>>42830914

Thought experiments and philosophy hold no weight to the true reality of nature. We're perceiving everything wrong and then think on those terms. It's all faulty from the ground up. I can easily say that reviving someone with exact consciousness will always be impossible given the very facts you're trying to prove your point with. Or maybe it is possible to split consciousness, that I can be in the same place so long as I don't perceive it. Would it be impossible to perceive with two eyes in front and also two eyes in the back of your head simultaneously? Reality doesn't bend to your whims of perception.

The fire is not continued, and there are many ways that human consciousness is not contiguous even in one lifetime.

transformation is death though.
Your matter may be reborn/rearannged to give way to new consciousness but it won't be (You)
>>
>>42833681
i am me right now, yet i was not myself before my birth. so not-me gives rise to me one way or another. matter rearranging to give way to new consciousness does not pertain to my continuous experience of life.

yes and i will not stick around to experience my non-consciousness. then later i am able to do it again. everything inbetween is a blip.
>>
>>42833795
You blue pilled yourself by putting the point of authority with something external. Certain matter configurations don't give rise to you.
>>
>>42833812
>then later i am able to do it again.
Why do you think this?
Why do you think there is no temporal aspect to your personhood?
Not in that you age and will end, but that in the "you" saying this is only existent in a certain time range, and even though the awareness will continue it wont be "you."
>>
>>42833859
yeah its a matter of terminology. we dont have good words to talk about this. i like "experience". but the identity wont be the same. i dont consider myself from 1 second ago to be myself. but i am obviously continuously experiencing.
>>
>>42830862
what should my takeaway from that be? that nothing makes sense? no thanks, jew.
>>
>>42833877
Then it would be closer to general understanding, and thus better communication, to say you consider that you die every second, and there is no continuing "I".
It's the opposite of what the pic is saying.

>>
>>42833903
It does though. Which part is confusing you?
>>
>>42833903
>>42833909
Wether they contradict or not depends on your metaphysics
>Closed individualism is considered to be the default view of personal identity, which is that one's personal identity consists of a ray or line traveling through time, and that one has a future self.
>Empty individualism is another view, which is that personal identity exists, but one's "identity" only persists for an infinitesimally small amount of time, and the "you" that will exist in the future is an ontologically different being from the "you" that exists now.
>Open individualism is the idea that individual personal identity in reality does not exist at all, and all conscious beings are in reality the same being.
>>
>>42833887
i dont consider those deaths. i die at the end of my life. its a distinct phenomenon.
>>
>>42833966
you can also say "my experience is interrupted at the end of my life" which would be more accurate according to my personal terminology. its difficult to discuss when we don't have words for these things.
>>
>>42833937
>depends on your metaphysics
Right. That's the argument.
>>42833966
But words do not belong to you, thus the general understanding part.
What you are describing should be considered deaths, in terms of experience.
Otherwise the focus on the point of "death" is meaningless to the discussion.
Except it isnt, because you yourself have admitted there is a distinction.>>42833972
>you can also say "my experience is interrupted at the end of my life" which would be more accurate according to my personal terminology.
But that's the same thing you are saying happens from one second to the next.
If not - if you mean there is some difference between
>i dont consider myself from 1 second ago to be myself
and
>my experience is interrupted at the end of my life
Then AGAIN op's pic is wrong because it is saying that the self is what is continued.
>you can objectively say you were pulled out of this death
What "you"?
If you are saying "I am not myself a second ago" then you are disagreeing that "you" can be pulled out of death.

If instead you want to say it is some other "you" and death is the eternal end of that self.
Then you are agreeing with me.
>>
>>42830862
I've played with this idea in my head and it seems too straightforward and assumptions based. i do think we "come back" or reincarnate in some way but its too simple to put it in these terms.
>>
>>42830993
How were you ever non existent? Every single bit of matter that has ever made your body has been present in this universe since its inception. You have been around this place for billions of years in some form or another and you will still be here in some form or another after this universe experiences heat death.
>>
>>42831193
> You and fire have the exact same amount of subjectivity
Is this an LLM hallucinating?
>>
>>42834078
i agree more with you than the OP image. i laid out my thoughts here >>42830904

yes, i mean
>i dont consider myself from 1 second ago to be myself
and
>my experience is interrupted at the end of my life
are two different topics. i dont have much to say on identity. i dont believe it can be subjected to "death" as i use the word. my past self only exists in my imagination and is clearly distinct from my present self.

its not another "me" after death. its just the continuation of my experience. "experience" is not tied to identity. or maybe it is depending how you see "I" vs "my". not sure

>>42834220
i am not my body. identity is probably an emergent property or its the brain acting as a receiver for a sea of consciousness.
>>
>>42830862
The obvious flaw here is that death is not infinite. It is almost infinite but not quite, as an infinitesimal portion of that infinity is set aside for the life you are currently experiencing.
>>
>>42830862
It's only half right.
When you die time stops being a thing for you. Except, you don't ever experience time again because there's nothing to bring you back.

The general idea is that once time stops having an affect on you, everything happens within an instance. Which is true, but that doesn't cycle back to you being a thing again unless you want to believe that through endless everything for all time, you'll somehow experience life again.

From the Roman Empire, Man landing on the moon and all of our lives, to people that will be born in 2200, it all happens within an instance. And yet, to the people that will never be born, everything including the end of everything happens within an instance. The same instance that they could be born within, starts and end at the same time.
>>
>>42833972
no, your experience will not be interrupted. it will end.

the chance of the same matter configuration happening again that gave rise to your current experience is nil. And even if it were to happen again, you would not have memories of past instantatiations. The chance that matter would arrange itself in such a way so that you can continue your current experience (=meaning you have memories of your current experence) is also nil.
>>
>>42834484
from my perspective it will continue. i never experience the same thing twice. i also dont need to remember anything. i can't "not" experience from my perspective, for obvious reasons. it ends and starts again but for me its a blip. it will start again the same way it has already done once.
>>
The premise makes so many assumptions but good thread anyways OP.
>>
>>42834516

With the Vertiginous Question and the Strong Self-Sampling Assumption (SSSA). According to the SSSA, you can think of yourself as being a random, roughly average experience-moment or time-slice of experience. If you happen to find yourself as a human and not as something else like an animal, a fire, etc., this implies that either A) you won the cosmic lottery and find yourself as a human through pure chance, despite the odds being extremely small since there are far more non-humans than humans, or B) observer-moments on average are humans or human-like entities. If animals are conscious, statistically I should almost certainly expect to find myself as an animal and not a human since animals vastly outnumber humans. Finding myself as a human and not as something else may therefore be evidence that most beings aren’t sentient.
>>
Imagine you lived for a second.
An eternity of not existing.
That second.
An eternity of not existing.
What are the chances that you're living that second right now?
What changes by stretching that second to 100 years, against two infinities?

No. Your chance of being an animal is exactly 0%.

>>

how?
It is true that when a human experiences "non-experience", there is no feeling of time
This is already proven by surgical anesthesia. Patients describe it as
>1 moment I was awake
>The very next moment, I woke up. 10 hours later. In the blink of an eye
Death is non-existence. There is no consciousness in death.
Therefore in death, the experience of 1 second passing is the same as the experience of 1000 billion years passing.
I agree maybe life isn't guaranteed, but we know for a fact that you don't experience time without a consciousness. We know there is no consciousness in death.
>>
>>42837579
>It is true that when a human experiences "non-experience", there is no feeling of time
Sure there is. you would see this if you've ever been around someone in the middle of a blackout.
All experience, no consciousness.

I respect the discussion itt and it's very highbrow. Personally we currently can not science out if there's anything after this. Also, people can see the sense in there being nothing after this because it's not like we have paranormal things happen right in your face everyday.

If, when someone died, they straight up had a golden glowing field emanating from their corpse and after a couple minutes it slowly drifts upwards and leaves...do you know how different society would be if absolutely nothing else changed on the planet?

I attack the logic problem of the afterlife not through "causality" and "observers." I agree it's possible there's nothing as I am agnostic, but I think the logic of our situation is that this is either a game or a test and we literally can't be allowed to know death is a non-issue or it screws up that purpose. This coupled with NDEs flavor my philosophy.
>>

>If, when someone died, they straight up had a golden glowing field emanating from their corpse and after a couple minutes it slowly drifts upwards and leaves...do you know how different society would be if absolutely nothing else changed on the planet?
It's not golden, it's more like rainbow-like, like a bubble. It wasn't the intention at all, but what is shown in Donnie Darko looks like it.
Some people can perceive them (specially children before their abilities are killed by materialism), they detach from the body at about three days after death. Some reincarnate instantly, others take about 40 days to get to the other side.
This changes nothing, people that know about this don't want to die because they know they'll forget their current life, become another person, and get stuck in the most vulnerable state as a baby for years without anyone from their loved ones being able to help them, without anyone having any idea of who they were, without anyt knowledge and going back to being ignorant of how anything works, not even being able to speak because they don't even know any language yet.
This isn't about existence vs. not existence, this is about the next life being a reset where you lose absolutely everything you fought for in this one.
And the worst part is that in the next one you could be evil and become like the people you despise on this one, filling others' lives with cruelty and suffering, watching them act in first person without being able to stop them, some even consider such a fate worse than death.

The actual truthnvke that is scary as hell to ponder is to realize that dualism is a myth, animism is reality, and that space is the spiritual world.

Yes, you will come back by random chance again. But inbetween that, reality existed without you for near infinity. Humans have only existed for 50,000 years; before then, animals fought and killed each other in full consciousness for billions, living in hell on earth.

You will spawn in again, when the cycle comes back around to you. But it also exists outside of you, and is everywhere around you. "You" cease to exist. Your physical matter sure doesn't, though.

Life is just matter experiencing itself, and inbetween your brief self-awareness of it, there is infinite time where you are a digested piece of goop in endless cycle.
>>
>>42833795
>The likelihood of your brain arising again in the same matter configuration and same conditions that lead to (You) as you are now is infinitesimal.
If time is infinite and the big crunch hypothesis is real (recent evidence suggeste it may be), then this is literally q mathematical certainty of occuring.

Infinity means everything will happen given infinite time.
>>
>>42846685
There's no infinite space- there is infinite light.
>>
>>42846685
The problem is there is a temporal component to "you."
The exact same mind with the exact same body and the exact same environment ARE NOT THE SAME at different times.
T0 "you" and T30 "you" are different purely on it being a later time, even if absolutely everything else is the same.
>>
>>42846727
If time is infinite then time=matter, infinitely rearranging itself, and then from there, time is an illusion. So too is existence, though.
>>
>>42846751
>If time is infinite then time=matter
That in no way tracks from the premise.
>time is an illusion
This makes it even more impossible for "you" to exist "again".
The whole idea requires time to be an existent factor.
>>
>>42846766
Matter doesn't exist. There is an illusion of existence; an illusion of a changing existence too. But if it is infinitely rearranging the same matter for all infinite time, and observation of this is a subjective finite experience, then is the whole thing not arbitrary? Everything will infinitely exist for all time. It is as if nothing existed in the first place; infinite creation means nonexistence. Not only is the self an illusion, but the supposed cycle outside of us we observe too.

Sophia is just making shit up as she goes.
>>
>>42846675
What's the difference between me and me with one different atom? Would I spawn as the first but not as the second? What about two atoms, three atoms, etc.? Where's the dividing line?
Looks like you're still stuck in dualism because you imply that there's a you that spawns into "your" body
>>
>>42846790
>Sophia is just making shit up as she goes.
If this is not illusion, then it is not an illusion of existence, which means all your other claims which stem from this illusion claim are irrelevant.
>>
>>42846918
>>42846997
I believe matter is innately conscious but not self aware. Rocks are animate. Self is an illusion created from self-awareness, but all is one and the same, infinite, and unchanging, so the illusion of separation, change, difference, is the real lie.

All of the universe is one. But that oneness is an illusion born from the lie of physical reality.
>>
>>42847018
>I believe matter is innately conscious but not self aware.
Then you dont believe existence is an illusion.
>Self is an illusion created from self-awareness
"X isnt real, and comes from the perception of X" this makes no sense.
Nothing you are saying has any cohesion.
>>
>>42847031
>you dont believe existence is an illusion.
Matter is just the spiritual world having accidentally trapped itself in a physical form. It is not the natural state of the universe. The universe itself is all encompassing oneness, schizophrenically devolved into the illusion of physical reality through arbitrary rules and limitations. Nothing really exists because it is all just one giant dream, ultimately.

You perceived your dreams last night. Are those reality?
>>
>>42847046
>Matter is just the spiritual world
So you DO believe existence is real. I never said what existence is, just that your own claims show that your OTHER claims are not true.
>Nothing really exists because it is all just one giant dream
Then dream is what exists.
So "nothing really exists" is wrong.
>You perceived your dreams last night. Are those reality?
MY dreams are defined in contrast to reality.
If there is no reality, then yes - the dreams are real and existent.
>>
>>42847053
Well i mean obviously something exists. Your own existance is proof of that, philosophically.

I just mean moreso that the separation of life and death and the supposed division between matter in the universe is the true illusion. Heck, vaccuums are probably antimatter and exist in some capacity as well; there is no state of "nothing" in this universe because everything is connected, bound by reality.

Not true because my first reply was to OP.
I haven't shifted my points at all. I've been pretty consistent.

All i did was move from "infinity means literally every possibility happens" to "everything happening all at once because time is an illusion, actually means nothing is happening at all."

It's not a hard conclusion to arrive at and it's more philosophical than metaphysics. If you believe in the infinite, then reality should inherently lose meaning in being mathematically pointless.

I think most people would define "existence" as physical reality as we know it. This does =/= or mean the same thing as "something exists." I believe something exists outside of existence as you know or experience it, and that your knowledge is illusionary.

It is not contradictory to believe physical reality/existence is an illusion, while simultaneously claiming *something* must definitively exist through the evidence that you, yourself are here to ponder it.

If you're just going to be rude about it, then I won't reply anymore either.

(You)

If time and space give rise to the infinite arrangement of a singular entity ecompassing all of physical matter, then the most concrete thing to identify with is time. You are literally time, as without time there is no "you" to construct in your head in the first place.

I’m looping for sure. 128000 fates per body in a loop. Loops get repeated sometimes. Linear reincarnation is a larger loop of people you become each with many fates.
>>
It's like pi, an infinity that never repeats. Though, for any string of finite length, you can find a repeat, which would be your life, appearing again and repeating itself, over and over.
But all the strings that get interrupted, and are followed by something else, also exist, so you could live tomorrow a completely new string that has never happened before.
Solomon was wrong, there's always something new under the sun.

Have these pieces of matter also formed consciousness (me) since the inception of the universe?
No, conscious existence comes completely out of the void. Out of infinite possibility you are somehow graced into the universe as "yourself." That existence is all that will ever be truly known to oneself, until returning to infinite possibility with zero frame of reference. If death is the actual end of conscious existence than there is no difference between it and pre-existence, they are both just non-existence and yet somehow your consciousness originally spawns from non-existence.

>your consciousness originally spawns from non-existence
No it doesnt.
It forms from the arrangement of reality changing.
There is no creation, there is only change.
>>
>>42857540
please explain to me why your consciousness is your own, why it spawned from your body and not someone else's or at a different time or space (or never at all!) A low iq person will say something like "because MY parents birthed me!" as if their parents were somehow always their parents even a billion years before either of you, or the human race, or the earth, or the universe existed.
The ONLY thing we know for certain is that our conscious existence appears from no place. There is zero logical reason why your conscious existence just so happens to be the one tied to your own body.
>>
>>42857745
Because consciousness is nonfungible.
>The ONLY thing we know for certain is that our conscious existence appears from no place.
Not true, and does not in any way follow from what you just asked.
NOTHING "just appears", there is no creation. there is change.

Anyone can say "actually i'm the result of electric signals sent through my mush brain built of star stuff :O" but the inescapable truth is that the mind is not a physical space. the images created from the data inputted into your meat head are not matter. your mental space, conscious or unconscious, does not exist as a location in actual space, the """space""" that is your conscious experience appears literally from nowhere.
>>

>Anyone can say "actually i'm the result of electric signals sent through my mush brain built of star stuff
I didnt say that. I said consciousness does not come "from nothing".
>your conscious experience appears literally from nowhere.
No, it doesnt. You can posit consciousness as nonmaterial, but that simply means consciousness has ALWAYS been, and "your" consciousness is the result of a change from a previous state in consciousness.
There is no creation.
There is only CHANGE.
