the story behind it is that the entity/diety/whatever who hybridized some of the Earth animals into modern humans resided in it. it supposedly had the capability, the entity and the equipment on the ship, to build full life forms from raw stock materials and did so on numerous occasions to prove the capability to humans on the Earth at the time.

there was a calamity of some sort, supposedly the arrival of evil in Tibet, which caused the Titanomachy and partially buried the spacecraft. I'll look more for it.
