Welcome to Energy Cultivation General! here we discuss the theory/practice of energy cultivation where we help guide and help each other to higher planes of being

>What is this energy you speak of?
Qi, ki, aether, orgone, archeus, etheric energy, vital life-essence, prana, chi, mana, vital energy, Vril, life force, Nen (joke) and quintessence
(Or whatever you call it.)
Is the forgotten (not so forgotten) Energy which radiates within every life form. small or big, "weak and strong".

>Why cultivate it
Improved... Physical/joint Health, Mental health, Spiritual health/development, Mental clarity, perception, creativity, mood, companion, strength/mobility, etc

>Ok I'm sold, where do I start
(research extensively on each subject, (take a look at the /ECG/ library for other books and subjects) then practice the one you resonate with the most (doing multiple cultivation practices at the same time is not advised))

a few minutes into EB, the upper abdomen starts tightening along with the chest. heart feels like it's fluttering. the breath gets fine and shallow in an unpleasant way.
>>
>>42905595
Are you going sight into embryonic breathing or just doing normal abdomen breathing?
You should start with just normal abdomen breathing, EB is not recommended if you are going straight of the bat.
By the use of deep and profound abdominal respiration you can increase the amplitude of the diaphragmatic movement by 3-4 times, changing the intra-abdominal pressure and promoting the peristalsis of the stomach and intestines.

I started on something like 2 or 3

profound, I felt as if I was floating on mist when mediating and there was this peace I felt which was soothing.

I used https://archive.org/details/QigongMeditation.EmbryonicBreathingByYangJwingMing/mode/1up

And have been trying to lengthen the duration of my breaths
>>
>>42910088
What is your average breath duration and how long did it take to get there?

I can reach more than a minute and a half while meditating but it's not my default rate.I cannot consistently keep this prolonged breath for more than 8 minutes. My face starts to get numb and there's this magnetic tension in my head.

So I'm curious what is your journey like?
>>
>>42910088
>I felt as if I was floating on mist when mediating and there was this peace I felt which was soothing.
how do you feel when you're not meditating?
>>
>>42905595
I've had that happen before, basically you need to sink the breath and qi to the navel.
If you start practicing reverse breathing while the breath is dispersed it's not embryonic breathing because there is no embryo in the LDT.
When you sink the breath in the navel, you sink the mind(awareness) along with it. The mind is the seed of yang, the LDT is field of yin. You plant the seed first and then water it with more yin with the EB by pulling it from huiyin when your balls start to tingle, otherwise there's nothing there.
>>
>>42906261
What's your moral life look like? Are you calling people names? Are you abusing others sexually?
Be honest. No judgement here, but this sounds like a deeper issue.
>>
>>42911233
This actually extends to a larger question - what is your day to day life like? Are you working a moral job or an immoral one?
Generally what's happening in your larger world, outside cultivation.
>>
>>42905606
>You should start with just normal abdomen breathing, EB is not recommended if you are going straight of the bat.
its odd and unusual that people think these are different techniques
the former works into the latter
the only reason one wouldnt be able to do the latter is because he hasnt refined his processes sufficiently just yet
>>
>>42906261
you shouldnt expect a western doctor to understand shit about your body except insofar as a concrete discovery has been accidentally made by someone in the past and there's some drug to treat it that they can get some kickbacks by prescribing them to you
I would recommend a good TCM doctor
a COMPETENT one, which will be hard to find
if a TCM doc is not also a cultivator, then just leave and dont bother with them even diagnosing you
if they arent able to do tongue & pulse, leave and find a competent one
>>
>>42910507
>I can reach more than a minute and a half while meditating but it's not my default rate.I cannot consistently keep this prolonged breath for more than 8 minutes. My face starts to get numb and there's this magnetic tension in my head.
stick with what you can sustain - you're telling us you can take 3-4 long duration breaths like this before you're getting hypoxia
its not about how long you can make some breaths for a handful of them
its about how long are your average durations across the entire session
>>
>>42911246
Embryionic breathing is not really a technique as much as the product of correct practice.
A teacher once explained it to me as a chicken hatching an egg, setting it on fire will not make it hatch quicker, it will burn the embryo. A portion of awareness is to be permanently set guarding and gently heating the lower abdomen.
If you set your eyes on it, it will burn.
Treat it as if you're listening to a sound in the next room.
>>
>>42911298
>Embryionic breathing is not really a technique as much as the product of correct practice.
yeah that was kinda my point
>>
Bump of power
>>
A funny thought occurred to me. I was hiking and twisted my ankle. Now as a response I send a large amount of prana to my ankle and I realized it feels real good when you use prana to heal.

Now this makes me feel like I understand the "masochistic knight" trope in fantasy. It can feel real good when you get hurt and then you heal from it. So why not throw yourself into the front lines and put yourself in a position where u can get hurt?

Suffice to say, energy cultivation is fun and its awesome when u get to use it for cool stuff. The skys the limit.
>>
Can spiritual gifts and chakra center be stolen or are they just blocked and corrupted? Can the damage that malicious people are doing to spiritually destroy be undone?
>>
>>42914065
>Can spiritual gifts and chakra center be stolen
spiritual power is not a gift
what do you associate with "spiritual gift"
everything in this universe is energy exchange
but there's no such thing as spiritual power welfare, one either puts in the work or one does not advance
>Can the damage that malicious people are doing to spiritually destroy be undone?
karma will be quite the bitch for such people
>>
>>42913129
>So why not throw yourself into the front lines and put yourself in a position where u can get hurt?
longevity is about not becoming harmed in the first place, then you have to use all these resources to simply restore you to where you were
but there is a section in taoist yoga that talks about using one's awareness and chi to attack sicknesses/injuries, its definitely a thing
>>

Keeping your spine straight is extremely important, your whole spine not just segments of it.
My energy practices have skyrocketed once I began training my posture more, I would even spent whole 30 minute sits with just focusing on keeping my spine straight.

Just wanted to share this,
>>
>>42920759
100 sit ups, 100 squats, 100 push ups daily and u will have perfect posture. thats all thats really needed. Once u get in the habit it isn't hard.
>>
>>42920812
Eh I wouldn't say that that's what everyone really needs, they'd surely help but training things like thoracic extension (which many people lack) and generally finding out if you have lordotic and/or kyphotic posture and then fixing it is more ideal.
>>
i have an issue with embryonic breathing by dr. yang jwing ming and i could use some help.
im at page 68 in the section of breathing methods.
im practicing the second method where you do abdominal breathing at the part where you are supposed to contract the middle part where your anus and penis are (perineum) and i understand that i have to follow the instructions step by step.
so im supposed to follow with reverse abdominal breathing ok i get it....but then it jumps to embryonic breathing and in the same page talks about marrow breathing but it never dwells on any of the two because it says they will be talk about in more detail later in the book.., ok i get it.
BUT then on page74 it talks about five gates breathing and page 75, 76 and 77 it stars talking about exercise that you are supposed to do there's even some images of the author doing the exercises.
i have 2 questions:
1-im i supposed to change my daily day to day life way of breathing according to the hierarchy of the breathing methods in the book (normal breathing, abdominal breathing etc.) so that i do them only in my qigong practices while meditating or im supposed to do it all the time everywhere i go for the rest of my life.?
2-the exercises where the author of the book appears in pages 75 76 and 77 im i free to do them once i dominate reverse abdominal breathing or im supposed to do them at a later date when i already learn about embryonic breathing?...its a little confusing.
sorry if my question is stupid and i hope somebody could have the time to help me i would really appreciate it.
thanks in advance.
>>
>>42920759
>Keeping your spine straight is extremely important, your whole spine not just segments of it.
yes, 100%
full breathing is best done with a straight spine
practice well enough and the chi will come that makes a straight spine easy
it just arises when things are right, sitting up straight becomes 0 effort
>>
>>42921113
there's a reason a lot of fundamental practices are concerned with straightening and lengthening the spine
>>
>>42922320
reverse breathing isnt really necessary to learn
marrow breathing is of such a level of refinement that its a good bet that none of us will reach cultivating it in any meaningful way, me included
ok, now that I went and read what's there...you dont need to focus on these things right now
there's a LOT of work to be done, as in fully making your body remember, integrate the training fully
this is why I always tell people the rote method is best to make these achievements
it was joked here a while back that I brute force cracked samahdi, well, the rote method is how you do it and make it reliable, just by sheer establishment and reinforcement of habit
stick with natural ab breathing method
you want to train them to such a level that those refined motions become your default instruction set that your medulla will lean on when autonomic breathing is doing its thing
I never consciously did things like skin breathing, things like that are outcomes of practice
the chi will coalesce at the lower dantien, it will grow over time until it encompasses the whole gut, the torso, the edges of your body, before radiating off the skin and extending out past the body
let this naturally arise out of proper natural ab breathing
keep the focus on the fundamentals - proper mechanics, proper posture, proper attention
remember lots of stuff is connected, physically, and when this is taken into account for breathwork, it sets the stage for the chi to amass better
but before you really generate additional chi, all the initial work goes into firming the jing, so this is why you just keep training while all the events take place under the surface, not easily discernible in the beginning, these signals will become more apparent the more progress you make
>>
>>42923443
is forming the dantien going to hinder progress if we decided to pursue other energy traditions?
>>
>>42923867
Since it deals with the most substantial form of energy, being the vital essence, it's fairly present across multiple traditions as something that just occurs when the mind sinks there naturally.
Since your gut is not really a vital organ, its a good place to start over say the solar plexus or the third eye as the amount of energy directed as a beginner would often be unstable.
Gaining access to the central channel is also possible through the LDT, it's even less subtle, so it can actually be a solid foundation for branching out later.
Since the other energy centers are more closely related to emotions, directing energy there can have immediate effect on your mental state, it's often common for somewhat intermediate practitioners to fail at regulating their emotions and amplify certain character traits with their abundance of energy.
Virtue and sin are sides of the same coin,
the harder you flip it, the more it will bounce.

OA, thanks for your consistent contributions. Duck poster from earlier ecg threads, and have found a lot of value in your stillness methods, although still nowhere near succeeding at them.

In trying earnestly to build foundation, I overdid it. My hips don't open well, so I've been stretching and in the meantime doing burmese posture working up in duration. I was just starting to crack the two hour mark more regularly in my sits, when I noticed tendon pains on the outsides of my kneecap. I don't know if the cause is improper posture, improper stretching, both or neither, and so I have abruptly stopped my sitting practice while looking at things like kneesovertoes guy on YouTube for physio knowledge...

Do you have advice, in particular for the case in which I must resort to chair or supine meditation while rehabbing my knees? The taoist system I have been studying seems to indicate that without cross legged sitting, the way is largely blocked. Any ideas on what I can do to continue toward the light?

Thank you. Wishing you fruitful writing sessions and peaceful days.

I’ve finally found my thread. I didn’t know it was called energy cultivation but I started being able to feel this energy after having acupuncture done for chronic pain. It felt like a buzzing feeling criss crossing throughout my body and I’ve since come to learn that the buzzing was the energy moving through the meridians. I’ve made a lot of progress since then like the microcosmic orbit to store energy every day in the lower energy centre and now am also learning the macrocosmic orbit too. It’s crazy how once you get the sensation of being able to physically feel the energy it makes following all these practices and exercises so much easier. When I go to sacred places or nice natural places like waterfalls it also activates the feeling and I reckon it’s as these places contain a high concentration of energy that can then be used too.

Nice anon. Reminds me of the aspect of this taoism path I'm on that I like so much: it says that visualization is unnecessary (and can even be dangerous), and that all one requires is sufficient stillness and foundation for knowledge to begin arising in the form of direct experience felt within the body. Seems consistent with olfactoryanon. Something trustworthy about it. Good luck!

The Tao is nameless and unchanging.
Although it appears insignificant,
Nothing in the world can contain it.

If a ruler abides by its principles,
Then his people will willingly follow.
Heaven would then reign on earth,
Like sweet rain falling on paradise.
People would have no need for laws,
Because the law would be written on their hearts.

Naming is a necessity for order,
But naming can not order all things.
Naming often makes things impersonal,
So we should know when naming should end.
Knowing when to stop naming,
You can avoid the pitfall it brings.

All things end in the Tao
Just as the small streams and the largest rivers
Flow through valleys to the sea.

It's mostly your fault if it hurts, cause if your body was not clogged up by emotional trauma it wouldn't be fucked up and if you didn't goon every day since you were 12 then your energy would naturally be strong enough to clear most of it without intervention from who knows what entity.

Not him,but from what I understand:-
>I always tell people the rote method is best to make these achievements
This means having a breath meditation session as frequently as you can, whenever you can.5 minutes,10 minutes. And a minimum of 1 hour before going to sleep. In this sessions you will stick to abdominal breathing, make them long, deep, smooth, slow like you can't feel the air passing your nose at all.But do it comfortably and relaxed, discomfort will thwart any progress. This is not a competition.
Your medulla which is the respiratory center of the brain, will memorize this slow breathing pattern after roughly 2 months make it your default.
This kind of breathing eliminates all noise and stores energy. When you're meditating, think of it like manually grinding for xp in an rpg.But after your medulla gets reprogrammed,it will become automatic and you can put your mind into calming down the heart and subsequently focusing on your midbrain.

which matures and then eventually you receive things like metabolic & endocrine boost (yang)
which matures and folds back into super stillness (the great stillness) (yin)
which matures into a spark of spiritual light (yang)
samahdi arises out of long chains of uninterrupted awareness
but without refinements, the awareness isnt able to be kept for sufficiently long
through training I discovered that the root energy potential for random thoughts comes from the basic processing of sense potentials
a nerve gets activated, fires off, influences other things
this all consumes energy in the process
so by attenuating these neurological potentials on a daily basis, an above baseline energy forms
and serves as the basis for deeper quiescence, revealing the body's needs are indeed energetic and not chemical
it requires a significant level of conditioning to set the stage for the bodymind to exist in samahdi
once well conditioned, it will come every day
and eventually form the basis for the ongoing enlightenment experience

that might be being a bit generous
its inadvisable to focus on timeframes, for each of us has our own levels of fucked up
but you are 100% correct in that the less fucked up one is, the easier this process becomes
>An experience that is beyond description
I try anyway, but I also try to avoid using more traditional language for it such as jhanas, because its ime just inviting others to come and say you're not describing things like the suttas describe them so its fake
its bad karma to lie about these things
when parsing my words and comparing them to suttas, almost the entirety of it is consistent with the suttas
where I deviate I have good reason and explain it, such as the old suggestion to look at the tip of your nose vs finding a particular relaxation of the eyes that does not activate the motor neurons, or dont bother with sniffing the air and feeling the air when you really want to drop the flow beneath the threshold of turbulence so that the senses are not roused by the activity
when one is well conditioned enough, arranging the conditions for samahdi to arise becomes minimal, and the light returns with all the same familiarity as your best friend that you've very glad to see

the purpose of the mco is to distribute to the extraorinary vessels, not to store
storing is done at the end but stillness at the end of an active session should be treated more like absorbing vs storing

>is forming the dantien going to hinder progress if we decided to pursue other energy traditions?
you probably want to consider if you're doing a top down or a bottom up approach in terms of energy centers, and things like kundalini dont really fit either because that's going right after the central channel
at any rate, stillness underpins all of these and is required to properly integrate the energies raised

Thank you! Do you know if it's possible to still obtain sealing of the lower gates (neidan POV, but there's a Buddhist analog iirc) without cross legged? it was moreso that I had to take all of these teachings and execute them to the best of my understanding and then troubleshoot and adjust based on how reality applied
a simple example, it was written to expand the abdomen on the inhale
so I proceeded doing precisely, explicitly that
until a reached a stage where I was able to make the breath slow enough that my diaphragm hiccuped because it wasnt being properly engaged by the oversimplified "expand the abdomen" instructions
basically revealing that there's differing musculotendonal tension when comparing the top/front to the bottom/rear
so if the diaphragm isnt properly engaged in breathing, then once you reach a certain stage of slowness, its going to snap back into place
this led me to ask such questions as
>how does one begin a breath properly
and breaking that particular glass ceiling came in the form of recognizing the diaphragm's anchor to the lumbar spine and utilizing it
stuff like that is why I come and teach all of the troubleshooting and refinements I had to make along the way
>>
>>42937500
dont worry about "sealing the lower gate"
so long as you're not sexually abusing yourself and you engage the perineum properly in breathwork, you'll be allright
stuff of that nature is one of the reasons why le advanced stuff is often left without mention to beginner/intermediate levels, its just a distraction for where one is at those stages
>>
>>42937785
God bless. The neural and muscular stuff you get into feels like a spiritual version of knees over toes guy -- as in first principles thinking capable of producing BIG help for many.

Would love to study under you if it were an option, thanks for these pearls friend. Be well!
>>
>>42937785
Can you expand aa bit more on the diaphragm stuff?
I've noticed that in my practice,I can exhale a lot longer than I can inhale, like quadruple the time. The movement of exhale just clicks for me.
But I cannot make the inhale sufficiently slow.It is slow enough but not at the level of my exhale.
I've timed it with a stopwatch and my exhale can reach 2 and a half minutes but my inhales stay around 45 seconds.
I know it has something to do with the diaphragm but can't wrap my head around it.
>>
>>42915377
>what do you associate with "spiritual gift"
There were these structures that I either made or were given to me in dreams. I could feel them spiritually attacking me until one of these came up then they'd slow down for a week. Then attack again until they seemed to be all gone. They kept laying traps both people I knew and people I didn't know until I missed them then said that the traps were justification for their attacks. They seem like that can see my visualizations and know every action I do even in private. What do you mean by work?
>>
>>42937353
Maybe storing isn’t the right word but rather refining. It definitely does bring a large amount of energy into the body and refine and circulate it. I used the word store because it seems like I now always have a dense wellspring of energy from which to draw from in the lower dantian, that I can feel the orbit even when not meditating. This is also what was described in Understanding Reality by Chang Po Tuan as the golden elixir which is the fundamental base upon neidan.

Anyway, I’m not here to debate minutiae. I was more so curious, after a few years of self teaching, about others’ experiences with the somatic side of sensing qi. For me, it’s not visual at all and it’s more through sensation. As I’ve progressed, I can feel and hear the intensity and refining qi also gives it a different “pitch” or vibration. Having this somatic feedback has made it easier to try and decode some of the texts which are a bit obscure to read. I’ve heard that there are both visual and non visual ways of working with energy cultivation and was curious to hear others’ experiences here.

How do I breathlengthmax? If I'm aiming for 60 sec per breath, am I counting 30 sec inhale, 30 sec exhale? Or do you look at the stop watch sometimes? Where is attention focused, the gut area?
>>
Which of these threads was moved to /bant/? Theres an archive for that, I'm hesitant to go there though because of the pr0n (really it should be illegal).
>>
>>42940087
>How do I breathlengthmax?
If you want an app,I recommend prana breathing. You can set the inhale-exhale ratio and time. The app will notify you with sound or vibration(helps when you're in publice).I get a lot of breathing session done in public transport or waiting area.
Keep the ratio same or the exhale slightly longer.
>If I'm aiming for 60 sec per breath, am I counting 30 sec inhale, 30 sec exhale?
Don't start with that time right off the bat,it will only set you back(unless you already have put in sufficient practice and healthy). You want to lengthen your breath, but not get into any discomfort.
For example, you can start with 15 seconds, which may not sound like lot,but comparing with the average breathing which is 12 times a minute, this is a huge improvement.
Do it a lot, every chance you get. After some time, this will feel fast and you will increase the time. This way your breath duration will keep increasing gradually.
I started with 12 seconds breath and now my exhale alone goes over 2 minutes.
>Or do you look at the stop watch sometimes?
If following a set inhale-exhale time feels too rigid for you, using stopwatch or timer is also helpful.I sometimes use a tally counter to count my breath against a timer to see how much my average breath improved.
Many people will say you don't need all this gizmo and that may be true. But this sort of feedback helps a lot with motivation.
>Where is attention focused, the gut area?
Sit in proper posture and perform abdominal breathing, not moving the chest at all.Slow breathing requires sustained effort,It feels like moving your abdominal muscles against resistance. This will automatically take up your attention. But after it becomes your default mode of breathing, don't worry about the guts too much.
>>
>>42940580
how do i avoid overefforting?
>>
>>42941365
Don't go into discomfort.Keep your body relaxed, stretching helps.Don't forcibly lengthen your breath so much that you have to gasp for air.Find the maximum duration you can do while staying comfortable and do that.Eventually your comfort zone will increase.
Gently push the envelope.

Any tips on kidney jing restoration maxing? I was on adderall for ten years, also took testosterone for a couple. Have been off all drugs (including lust and self abuse) for a longer time now than I see most people talking about, and feel fully recovered including from lingering attachment to that stuff. However, I still exhibit lingering signs of kidney deficiency. I will be continuing with my celibacy and develop more stillness, but I feel that my kidneys need extra help restoring the amount of jing I have squandered.

>>42942005
>For me it's the opposite: I can inhale a lot longer than I can exhale.
I started with Forrest Knutson's instructions where he said to make the exhale always longer.
As it would help the parasympathetic nervous system dominate and help to reach HRV resonance.
So initially I would always focus on the exhale making it as long as possible.
My inhales are not short but not on par with my exhales.

That's called Ujjayi breath or ocean breathing. He mentions it in one video but it's not necessary.
it's more like a trick for those who have just started and doesn't have the necessary proprioception or interoception.
This can help understand your abdomen, diaphragm, perineum's movement.Once understood, you don't really need that.
There are other tricks so you can get a feel of what's happening.
Try these: swallowing, coughing, inhale and exhale with your nose pinched or glottis closed.
While doing these, really get a feel of what you are sensing inside your body.Where do you feel pressure, does your perineum lift up.What posture makes your lower abdomen tense instead of your chest. How to relax your chest. That kind of stuff.
When you can get your abdomen and perineum going in a rythmic manner with your breath, you can discard all these.
Or if you forget, you can employ these tricks to help you remember.
>>
>>42942309
Only if I get the top bunk
>>
>>42942274
For breathing to slow down you need an opposing force or resistance to work against. This is why so many books and teachers recommend constriction of the throat or pinching your nose.
But the best method would be to get the tension going in the lower abdomen and work with that. It's called the intra-abdominal pressure and increasing it has several benefits.
Pavel Tsatsouline's workout books strongly recommends to keep a moderate amount of tension going in the lower abdomen as it generates more power.
And by lower abdomen, the pressure should not only be at the front belly, but the sides, backs and bottom(pelvic floor) should be engaged as well.

explore the initial stages of the inhale
begin the inhale with the diaphragm, as if there was a miniature guy in your gut pulling a sail attached to a rope
integrate that motion in with the whole gut and perineum as if you were sitting in a large bowl and filling it with the inhale
make sure not to buffer the incoming air with action from the nose/sinuses, as it will take the emphasis off the guts
>>
>>42938591

>>42939379
>For me, it’s not visual at all and it’s more through sensation

>How do I breathlengthmax? If I'm aiming for 60 sec per breath, am I counting 30 sec inhale, 30 sec exhale?
yes - keeping things even becomes important towards disconnecting your senses from breathing
one of my teachers referred to this as the One Breath
there have been times I couldnt really tell if I was inhaling or exhaling, but it didnt matter because you just keep the gut motions going
>Where is attention focused, the gut area?
for breathwork, yes
anywhere air touches is yin in this context - relaxed, passive, no inputs
the air passes through the nose, but the nose/sinuses/etc do not assist in moving the air through the system
>>
>>42940580

>Sit in proper posture and perform abdominal breathing, not moving the chest at all.Slow breathing requires sustained effort,It feels like moving your abdominal muscles against resistance. This will automatically take up your attention. But after it becomes your default mode of breathing, don't worry about the guts too much.
a straight spine allows for the most free movement of the guts
its like pedaling a bike, once you have some speed, you can coast a bit, pedal less...but you still have pedaling to do
>>
>>42941365
>how do i avoid overefforting?
your body will let you know when you're trying to advance too quickly
things like a sudden increased heart rate and desire to breathe are natural functions to keep your body in check, but if you trigger them while doing breathwork, that's a good indication you're trying to extend the lengths too much too fast
as you build up more gung, you will find that this additional energy drives the ability to take longer breaths, because after all, the body's needs are energetic and not chemical
>>
>>42942005
>I can inhale a lot longer than I can exhale.
in my experience this is an indication that you're trying to take too long of a breath for what your current state can support and its rushing the exhale

>Should I drop coffee too?
an ol taoist lady once told me that caffeinated coffee is a tricky thing and to always have a glass of water afterward
there is some benefit she spoke of that I do not recall, but also that the benefit disappears and turns into a net negative without the water afterward
>Should I take weird herbs and find a sagely Chinese doctor to stick me with needles?
find the sagely TCM doc first
a good one will himself cultivate as well as do pulse & tongue diagnosis
a TCM that lacks doing the above, expect a crap shoot of efficacy

anytime you see stuff like this, do not consider it to be what you're working on for anapanasati
you want maximal efficiency
you want to find what's most energetically potent while at the same time requiring the least amount of effort/engagement
such techniques have their uses, but not for anapanasati/stillness meditation

>Try these: swallowing, coughing, inhale and exhale with your nose pinched or glottis closed.
I did some similar thing in devising an activation exercise - try finding out everywhere you can effect changes upon breath & air pressure
nostrils, the different sinuses, back of the throat, bronchi, chest
then from a perspective of activation, you now know what not to do
all the impetus for moving air should come from the diaphragm & below

So it appears that catastrophic failure at the higher stages of this path is quite horrifying, and it is far preferable to instead have been delusional. The latter is merely humbling.

If I understood only one thing,
I would want to use it to follow the Tao.
My only fear would be one of pride.
The Tao goes in the level places,
But people prefer to take the short cuts.

If too much time is spent cleaning the house
The land will become neglected and full of weeds,
And the granaries will soon become empty
Because there is no one out working the fields.
To wear fancy clothes and ornaments,
To have your fill of food and drink
And to waste all your money buying possessions
Is called the crime of excess.
Oh, how these things go against the ways of the Tao!

Okay I just did the bathtub exercise you talk about. Very useful. What I noticed:
It was easy to tell how to breathe silently, as you said it would be. Focusing on my gut/diaphragm pulling the air down through my face holes made it easier. The slower and lighter I breathed, the quieter. The hard part was resisting the urge to take that huge gulp of air - which immediately made the sniffing sound. So I thought maybe I was just breathing too slow and light. There seems to be a range of breath cadence that is still under the noise threshold. I found it was easier to get a satisfying amount of oxygen as I extended my spine more through the crown of my head, tucking my chin back a bit and rolling my chest/ribcage/shoulders back. Best I found during this session was about ten sec inhale ten sec exhale while still silent and not feeling like I was going to suffocate.

Knees over toes exercises are giving me confidence in knee even though it's only been a few days. Maybe I'll be able to sit again sooner than anticipated, and just have to take it slow while improving hip flexibility. But I'll be trying to use that breathing technique while laying supine or sitting in a chair meanwhile. Was going to post a pic of the bathtub faucet but that's a little much, no need to tubdox myself.

If olfactoryanon or others get to the point of regular samadhi, it would make academic study of the phenomenon far easier than it has been. Didn't dig too deep or Anna's archive the journals yet or anything, maybe it's full of shit and this is widely available already.

Cultivating until anons can en masse /x/-post their luminous-astral-lucid-spiritual phenomena into the neuro literature would be glorious. And to be able to break it down simply enough that the gen pub can grock it and follow along? Any sexual excitement will result in your jing being converted into semen and not into qi. (though I know some schools some schools teach jing to be synonymous to semen essence, (which i assume is this one) but to the best of my knowledge this is not the majority)
This is also the reason why one cannot just strap a cage around their cock while still keeping their perverse sexual desires, in the hope of achieving pure celibacy, they most also celibate in the mind and body. but just because you have sexual desires, this doesn't mean you should throw in the flag and nut, as this is much more damaging then what I just mentioned

To the practice on hand; I am familiar with some practices within tantric and Taoist cultivation circles which require sexual existent, but know that this is not the norm and you would be heading out of orthodoxy by partaking in it.
I personally wouldn't practice it, for the reasons i mentioned above, but you see if it helps you and come to your own conclusion

Eh, the thing's not so simple. See, the issue is that many traditions do not mix well. For example, most eastern energy arts can be practiced after or before western occult practices, but many practitioners reported suffering issues, sometimes severe, when practiced concurrently.

Reminder that a lot of the "The Tao that can be described is not Tao" stems from the fact that for a period of history, Chinese themselves were confused and cryptic enough that they were willing to put EVERY single philosophical, mystical etc concept as representation of Tao. Any meditation, prayer, consideration about mortality, immortality, spirituality, ghosts, magic, martial arts, what-the-fuck-ever - was Tao.
>>
>>42957513
appears to be from dr yang's material, its not very descriptive or comprehensive at all in that area
his areas of strength are martial arts, and that embryonic breathing book is excellent
stuff like marrow washing or small circulation, I havent seen much of any indication he read some texts on it and one shouldnt expect much in the way of results from reading his material on it
and physical stimulation doesnt mean beating your meat or edging or any retarded crap like that, check out master tu's iron crotch stuff for the hard style of it
I'll pass on an ol japanese tech, take a good sized bath towel and hang it on your morning wood, focus on reabsorbing its energy
the morning absorption tech from taoist yoga is another good one with a similar use, its probably the only bit in that book one can realistically practice from it

>>42957584
>Any sexual excitement will result in your jing being converted into semen and not into qi.
as I told srg, there are efferent nerves attached to your sex organs, efferent carries signal away from the brain
lustful images, sounds, thoughts, are all interpreted as commands to make fluids
this is why the man with a pure mind will never have blue balls
celibacy starts in the mind
taoist sexual cultivation is a bit different in that its energy exchange and there are male-female energy dynamics taking place
its really only potent when both cultivate and have opened/energized some energy centers
>>
>>42957866
that first paragraph is terrible
a man does not need to stimulate semen production
the jing in question is best left unaltered, to its own devices
once the body decides to take its resources and convert them into sexual fluids, deconversion is a preposterously inefficient process and shouldnt be considered a technique to make advancements
chi springs forth from jing
you only get extraordinary chi when the jing is full and settled, only then does one really start getting well above baseline levels of chi
so do not misinterpret what physical stimulation means or what the function of these systems are
physical stimulation is also those groin kicks, ultimately developing strong ureters in turn strengthens the kidneys and adrenal system

What's the deal with chi stagnation? Let's say you do srg for a long time, like over a year or more, but you haven't been doing stillness meditation - is your jing full? Is it settled? Is your chi stagnated? What if during that time you were sexually aroused but still retained, does that change those answers? Will proper stillness help alleviate stagnation and transmute all that jing to chi?

>Let's say you do srg for a long time, like over a year or more, but you haven't been doing stillness meditation - is your jing full?
No.
/srg/ and similar groups SEVERELY overestimate both importance and effect of their practice and frankly, they often behave in an unhealthy cult-like manner. Now, retention is certainly useful in daoist practices and at times may be even necessary for a period of time but at the same time on its own it does little. It has to be actively utilized. Without tradition/practice directly interacting/using such, effects of /srg/ are minimal. Someone who actually does masturbate/has sex (including orgasms) from time to time but otherwise does actual regular, solid qigong practice will likely long-term achieve more.

Think of semen retention like eating a vegetable salad regularly. A salad can be quite healthy and eating it is good to get certain nutrients but it still won't make you physically fit compared to someone who maybe eats worse, but actually goes exercising. Or think of it like coal for the furnace - no matter how many tons of that coal you gather, till you actually start regularly loading and starting the furnace, you'll get hardly any heat.

kind of a serious question: I want to LARP as some kind of evil sorcerer/necromancer and look out for practices that I can implement for my larp. But which one of these would be best that would also work for my daily life (or at least improve it)? Qi gong and kundalini sound intriguing but im not sure if i am disciplined enough to learn all the foreign words. what about vril?
>>
>>42962428
qigong would work best for most people, as its so board and flexible and can be done basically everywhere
yoga comes second, only because this not a board.
virl is too esoteric and is kinda an offshoot of qigong

> intriguing but im not sure if i am disciplined enough to learn all the foreign words
You don't need to necessary to learn foreign words you aren't invoking anything.
You can literally start from just being aware of your breath and breathing from you abdomen, such as on a train or in a car and so on.
>>
>>42962445
thanks man, will look into qigong then as a starter.
followup question, are youtube videos on qigong practices good or should i stick to the books posted here?
>>
>>42962463
just start of with
https://archive.org/details/QigongMeditation.EmbryonicBreathingByYangJwingMing/mode/1up

Reading this will tell you the fundamentals of qigong in theory and the practice builds a good foundation, if you are stuck/having problems with the practice, you should look at the archives if someone had the same problem and if not just ask it here. Also just looking at the archives can give you some good pointers.
Also the text analyses brings key insights which allow for deeper study.

If you just reattain what is said in the book and talk about it to some guy who is interested, they will think you are some esoteric wizard. trust me I know

Some pointers:
1. Don't jack off or be sexually deviant it depletes your essence and stunts Qi growth
2. Don't get up suddenly right after some qigong practices, slowly ease out of it
3. Consistency is key
4. Don't just be eating meat, it makes you restless and stunts practice.
5. Deep slow rhythmic breaths are key
6. Try and strengthen your back so you can mediate with a straight back (key)
7. tongue on the roof of the mouth but I found that comes naturally

I know that it say stillness is what you should aim for but also aim to slow down your breath rate so if you can only do 6 seconds in and 6 seconds out try and aim for 8:8 and then 12:12 and so on. Don't get too caught up with counting though.

a strong spiritual foundation is bolstered by a strong physical foundation
this is why bodidharma taught the muscle and tendon changing practices
definitely learn stillness
but among the core stuff is flexing
it starts out muscular, but with a lot of practice turns into deeper things
whatever the posture, inhale and progressively flex every muscle in your body, except the neck and head
relax it all on the exhale
of course this is a utilization of the reverse abdominal breath
stretch in the morning, go through a bunch of flexing sets and postures, stretch, meditate
always follow up active things with stillness to maximally absorb what was done
learn good stillness
the highest amplitudes are achieved by balanced yin and yang
so its key to learn stillness
since yang practices dont build much yin
but yin practices see yang easily rise to match it

There's not that many foreign words. A decent book or two on basics of practice and you're set. If you'll lack discipline for that, there's practically no chance for you to get anywhere in spiritual development in general. Them's the breaks.
>what about vril?
Vril is bastardization of various eastern mystical concepts written by a guy for a book he admitted was fiction. It'd die the death of most fiction based upon some real mystical concepts, if not for some edgelords, especially for some reason of neonazi variety (I don't mean to overuse the term like some pearl-clutching individuals, I literally mean I know of popularity of the concept among oldschool/ex-skinhead national socialists). It may help the roleplay of edgelord sorcerer given connotations but only for completely clueless normies - others will just treat you like a pretentious, retarded poser.

>>42966563
Basically, gooning, coming in particular uses up your jing - a quality of both physical and energetic body, kind of foundational vitality of yours. You need it stable and built up - that is, nothing diverted to your dick - so then you can raise qi (chi) out of that stable foundation.
Now, you don't actually need complete, permanent abstinence for the rest of your life but there are periods of cultivation, especially in the very beginning, where you need everything to make any progress.

It's not any moral or ethical thing, just the fact that masturbation is using up some resource you kinda need left alone and settled in yourself to cultivate. There are exceptions as well as certain rarer practices that go in different direction but typical qigong? Yeah, leave your junk in peace for a longer while.

the changes in mind, body, and spirit produced by cultivation arent fake things, and all words are abstractions
its an even worse protest than an old man I was talking to, telling me if these things were really real, then le science would have already studied them and proven their efficacy, and since there arent comprehensive medical case studies about every aspect of this, that's plenty enough proof there's nothing there

the term jing has the term essence along side basically every time it is mentioned even after defining the term such as Essence (Jing) or Jing (Essence), additionally Essence just replaces Jing multiple times in the book

I agree, but the text we recommend literally does this shit, every time a Chinese term is mentioned the translation is right beside it.
Also the book doubles as a cultural and historical text so it would be more appropriate to mention the term along side it;

Given that's not how it works, I can safely tell you that you have one of the biggest issue of a beginner - that is, you create believable delusions and then get taken in by them.
Semen isn't created when you have desire. It's a constant process over months and if you won't cum it will be (usually) reabsorbed and new created or ejaculated (so-called wet dream, much more rare). Stomach has absolutely nothing to do with it either.

So, sorry to tell you this anon. I am sure you felt kinda excited by "unlocking an ability" but it's sadly just some random bio-feedback guided by your expectations.

I have to underline, it's a constant process. Every day new sperm cells are produced, stored for maturity in tubes near testes, mature to be ready to ejaculation after each is more than several weeks old - reabsorbed. At the same time new cells are being produced regularly.

That by the way is why I am kinda suspicious toward all those anons ITT claiming that to preserve jing, you cannot even get aroused because "reabsorbtion of sperm is inefficient and still a waste of jing". It happens anyway.
>>

Awesome you can accept it with grace. Speaks well of you. Godspeed, anon.
>>
>>42985827
>>42985855
Also, a slight BUT WAIT though I worry if it's delusions it may strengthen them.
You may still be feelings things, movement of energy in the area between stomach and balls as it's lower dantian and concentrating in the area is supposed to give effects. It's just it's not sperm thing.
>>
>>42985870
>That by the way is why I am kinda suspicious toward all those anons ITT claiming that to preserve jing, you cannot even get aroused because "reabsorbtion of sperm is inefficient and still a waste of jing". It happens anyway.
Think about it like a value.

Imagine jing being oil or something and semen being water.
When you open the value (ejaculation)
water (semen) starts to flow out of it. Additionally, the oil (jing) 'resting on' the water comes out with it.
and in this case water must also be followed by oil. So the more water leaving the more oil gets used and removed out of its resolver (kidneys)
Hence if you want to accumulate oil you must also water.

The reason why you shouldn't be aroused is because it, for 1, increases the change of the value opening
and 2, it makes the mind unsteady; sexual desire is still desire and if one wishes to cultivate a stillness of mind he should remove/reduce harmful desire
>>
>>42985870
>That by the way is why I am kinda suspicious toward all those anons ITT claiming that to preserve jing, you cannot even get aroused because "reabsorbtion of sperm is inefficient and still a waste of jing". It happens anyway.
there's a natural level
and then there's the accelerated level of letting the mind be overtaken by lustful things
this was said in the context of purposefully arousing oneself in the context of cultivation, which is not a fruitful tactic, so it was discouraged
its an especially bad idea to overdo it on sex stuff when one is a spiritual practitioner, it is one of the larger pitfalls

No. It's still the same process. Yes, the process goes somewhat faster if you drain your balls regularly but it goes anyway, no matter what. The sperm cells are still either ejaculated or reabsorbed - and when they're not, they're gestating.
Thus, it's a bit misleading, by comparison >>42985908 of oil and water is more fitting, at least it explains the difference from the /x/ standpoint well.

its kinda like doing math and finding the lowest common denominator
you want all the structures to rise and fall in harmony, reaching their minimum and maximum extents simultaneously
its just a timing thing, I found it easiest to keep all the structures timed by using the structure that travels the shortest distance to time the other structures by
>Also what does the compression of peritoneum achieve? Biologically or neurologically speaking.
go and read the embryonic breathing book for more on this, but gut movement conditions the guts for storing chi better, it also gives the internal organs a gentle massage
>>
>>42973657
Okay so here's a bit of explanation because this is actually very good beginner practice.
>yijin jing
The stretch and relax portion is explained poorly.
1) extend the tendons
2) flex muscles/shorten tendon
3) relax muscles while keeping tendons taut
4) opening the joints so qi can flow, most importantly the knees, elbows, shoulders and pelvic joints
once qi is flowing the rest of the joints or tense areas will start popping open on their own, the myofascia layer will start to "hug" the tissues.
>four fold breath
It's pretty basic, although olfactory anon might have an aneurysm because the hold should come naturally.
Putting a weight on the navel can induce the needed tension amount of the abdominal fascia and omentum sac to actually get things going, but should be viewed as a crutch for beginners, rather than correct practice.
The movement of the abdomen itself is what controls the amount of yin/yang in LDT, longer inhale moves more yin, longer exhale moves more yang, this imbalance produces the results of this practice in making one more "awake", in short this is a practice to burn energy, not to store it.
The point of this practice is to employ the principles of yijin jing to refine the tissues of the body, heal joints and other ailments, clear out some channels/acupoints and achieve faster and smoother circulation of qi and blood in the limbs.

A good result from this practice is you can open laogong points in the middle of the palms. The complete opposite breath pattern you can use to clean out yongquan on the middle of your soles, these are 4 gates that are very important in energy cultivation and (self)healing.
>>

>It's pretty basic, although olfactory anon might have an aneurysm because the hold should come naturally.

breaths holds dont have a place when doing stillness meditation/breathwork
