It also appears to be behind the expansion of space that continues to speed up (therefore it has anti-gravity properties).3. The role of Dark Matter in all of this is still unknown. It interacts gravitationally with normal matter, but the source of it is unknown. Therefore, Big Rip could happen as a reason for the end of the Universe - if something has a beginning, then so does it have an end. Since even black holes are not eternal, then it's possible the spacetime, now without normal matter spread all around it to slow down the expansion, will increase uncontrollably, until the speed of expansion goes beyond lightspeed (the only thing in Universe that can happen faster than light is the metric expansion of space, as proven by the Inflation period). At this moment, even remaining atoms are torn apart, no interactions are possible and all distances become infinity - it's almost exactly like a bubble bursting. Indeed, long after we all die, future people, if we survive, will keep asking the question - where did the Universe come from, if the Universe itself shows that something can't come out of nothing. If it's a simulation, then that doesn't change anything, since our experiences, pain and happiness, are as real to us as they can get. Pretending something doesn't exist, doesn't make it disappear.

So around 32 billion we would see a shift in the paradigm: the universe would start to shrink. The time would come when only black holes and dead cold stars remain, the pull of the expansion and the dark matter scaffolding that comes with it folds, and everything will fall inward. If anything or anyone is alive and cognisant at that point, it would observe the formation of super massive black holes that would put today's massive black holes to shame.
