I am interested establishing a functioning outdoor shrine for regional spirits, while creating minor shrines is part and parcel to many traditions, in the present day the most refined traditions still existent seems to be in southeast asia. As someone with some land, I'm partial to the idea of setting up something appropriate, but I want to know if anyone has had experiences actually establishing outdoor shrines, as far as what they experienced to convince them to establish them in the first place.
>Spirit housesIs there any major non-abrahamic practice that /doesnt/ have a tradition of honoring nature spirits/fairies/earth deities, if they believe to exist?
>>42930607This gets awkward real fast, because if you are in the west, chances are if you are engaged with any practice of actually leaving offerings in natural or outdoor settings, even on your property, you still need to comply with standard sanitary practices, ie you can't leave food and drink. If you're leaving food or drink offerings, or even just tokens or small objects, you'd be subject to the relevant laws and regulations around food waste disposal unless you're actually burning the food on the spot over a fire or an oven. Practices vary depending on if, but in the parts of asia where folk buddhism is strong enough for active temples and folk practices to remain contemporary in everyday life food that is left in temples generally gets either eaten by the temple staff, gets given back to poorer parishioners as donated/blessed food and drink, or just gets recycled. If you're a party of one when it comes to your practice, just make sure to not be nasty and make it impractical to take care of any space you have, lest you have a unkept spirit house on your property, which would seem like be worse than not having one on your property.
