Why is Norse mythology not studied as commonly and as rigorously as Abrahamism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, or even things like Mesoamerican paganism?
Even hermeticists and esotericists seem to not touch Norse mythology with a 10-foot pole.

>why don't more people like my favorite manga as much as i do?
I mean, if you wanna study it and gather like-minded people online as a study group, why not do that instead of finger-wagging people into it like a church lady?
>>
>>42935301
Just a simple question bro. Why are you reading so much into it?
>>
>>42935248
The Norse were illiterate and did not leave any primary source material. Most of what we know about the Germanic/Norse religion is from Christian scholars who recorded the oral tradition (and interpolated it e.g., Grendel being descended from Cain according to Sturluson).

In other words, it is LARP-bait.
>>
>>42935248
Because there are really only two actual texts on this that humanity has ever had. The poetic Edda and the prose Edda. They’re old but honestly not even THAT old. Everything about the mythology from outside those texts is basicallly just made the fuck up or assumed/interpreted from the texts themselves. You can easily find and read them, though.

Study runes and yggdrasil and how to vibrate the runes in your consciousness to connect the pathways through the branches of yggdrasil. My mystical insight has basically revealed the Runic system is similar to the Dao, its basically using mysticism to divine a symbol from the primordial depths of awareness. I did this and saw the yin yang right after visiting this weird norse astral plane where giants were half buried in the earth.

Unfortunately, there's not much written down about it prior to the Christian takeover, so we don't have a lot to study. Even the Eddas and Sagas were written by Christians, struggling to document fading lore.
>>
>>42935415
They were literate but literacy was probably limited to elites. They left behind various rune carvings.
>>
>>42935677
You have a generous definition of “literate.” All the examples we have of runic inscriptions are utilitarian; an axe head with the inscription “this is Eric’s axe,” a boundary stone that reads “Harald put this stone here” etc.

You said it well, they left behind “carvings.” Not literature.

No, anon has a point.
I like to study insects.
I went online to find like-minded people; never once did it occur to me to go on 4chan and ask people why more of them aren't studying bugs.
I swear, some on you guys have only RECENTLY started using your brains.
>>
>>42935758
You must be missing the point.

What I’m asking in the OP is:
>why do people do X?
Meaning I want to know more about other people’s opinions, and what exactly drives their curiosities.
I’m definitely not saying that more people *should* study Norse mythology, which is what you seem to have mistaken me for proffering. Nigger.

Studying European paganism is actually really hard because as this guy said
>>42935429, all the texts we have are scattered and often of dubious accuracy, like you were trying to understand the culture of Afghanistan through 5 /pol/ shitposts that got printed out and laminated by some guy, and it's the only source you have because it's been 5000 years since the Internet went down.

Our understanding is still developing as archaeologists dig shit up and reexamine shit that got dug up years ago though a lot of it is really unsexy like some yokels have a local goddess and they throw things into a pool so they get a good harvest.
>>
>>42935248
You have individuals like Stephen Flowers/Edred Thorsson who developed quite an elaborate belief system out of it (see >>42935444), but I don't know much about him, or what his sources for any of this being what the ancient germanics actually believed
>>

There was a religious war, they lost
>>
>>42935248
They didn’t write much (or any) of their shit down + they had hyperdistinct regional beliefs. 2 villages a couple hundred miles apart would believe radically different things (from what we gather at least.)
For example, the modern day fascination with Odin is new. He was probably a fairly new addition to the original pantheon and only for a very select regional practice. The only reason he’s even recognizable today is because that was one of the few regions that wrote down their local poems.

Also Zoroastrians have a similar problem because they lost about 95% of their religious texts and that why they aren’t studied much either.

It would be more accurate to call it Germanic . Odin for the Norse Wotan for Germans Wodan for the Anglo saxons all the Germanic tribes had similar overlapping beliefs distinct from say the celts .

Its a question of do you want to do runic magic, or larp as a Norse historian.
There is an ethereal field of astral light that you can impart symbols into, which is the basis of sigil magic. Using runes isn't much different than any other system, you impart an intent through focus on vibration and/or a shape into the fabric, or you divine a symbol or vibration from the fabric through rune casting or looking at twigs and tree branches for runic signs as a seer. The important part is getting to the point where you can perceive astral light and the etheric space. It will bend light through the forms of vibration you impart into your aura, and you will see signs within nature. Use symbols rituals mudras mantras tools etc, to impart your intent into that fabric, to develop your awareness of your auric field, and give you the ability to visualize vibrations and geometry taking form within it, as psychic power. Then when you can perceive it and explore it, the tree of life, yggdrasil, planetary spheres, chakras, sephirot, qliphot, etc, are used as a guide map on how to progress through that field of energy into different states of consciousness.
If you get tapped into a runic mystical current, study the meaning of the runes, then you can encode your intent through runic shapes, and the spirit will communicate with you through runic shapes, and you will start resonating with the Norse fractal of the tree of life. Then go ask Odin himself, or various spiritual entities whom were alive at the time and know runes, to teach you the true mystical path that you seek. You won't find that real thing in books, it will be from the spirit itself.
The legitimacy of a source matters less than your true sincerity of seeking, they are basically sign posts or starting points. I studied Thomas Karlsson Uthark and others, to get to this point. I don't really use runes, but I have seen them a few times during my astral voyages, and been to Niflheim and met and spoken with Odin.

this is exactly it. Every writing we have about germanic religious practices comes from Romans or Christians. Some things like Maypoling and Hex signs may be more or less unadulterated, but the true interactions with them are lost. Better to look at what rural slavs do and try to extrapolate.

Because christoids have been on a campaign for centuries to bury every western belief system that isn't their middle eastern desert slave cult, leaving norse mythology as the thing that inspired fictional work instead of native european beliefs.
>>
because the druids figured out quickly and peacefully that the teachings of Christ and the apostles perfectly correlated to their druidic triads
while history is a bit sparse on this subject, it's likely some of them realized that the precision of that overlap wasn't a coincidence, and that they were the descendants of the 10 northern Israelite tribes that had been taken into Assyrian captivity
the Norse stuff was no longer needed, it was probably taken seriously at one time, some relic of their wanderings, but once the druid-created universities got access to Christianity, it just stopped being taught

Druids were Celtic. Christfag doesn't know history and makes shit up, news at 11

I was going to say that it was a lack of writing as the Norse didn't really have a culture of writing in the same way that say the Romans did, but that would beg the question as to why the Roman/Greek religions are not as well explored as Christianity. Sure they're both more observed that Norse or Celtic but ultimately it's ignored as well.
I suppose the reason is just that christianity just "won" so to speak.
Christianity is a very enticing religion, as it's freedom from consequences but is ultimately a slave religion.
But that slave religion demands control of others in it's domain as its god demands control over his subjects, and all things considered yahweh did indeed choose correctly when choosing Constantine and it led to the great Rome being overtaken by christians.
Sometimes I like to imagine it never happened and that Rome stayed Pagan and thus most of the west would worship the Hellenic Gods, But alas here we are.

>beg the question as to why the Roman/Greek religions are not as well explored as Christianity
The Platonic tradition is probably what you're looking for most here, from the man himself through to the Neoplatonists like Plotinus, Porphyry, Iambilchus, Proclus, Damascius, Gemistos Plethon. The interesting thing about it is just how much you'll realise neoplatonism inundates occultism/esoteric theology pretty much universally

Mostly this, but also the fact that much of the mythology is quite reminiscent of others: Ragnarök echoes Armageddon, the Norse Gods are quite similar to the Hellenistic ones, etc. There's little new here.
>>
>>42946744
>ultimately it's ignored as well
Probably because we're in 2000 years of Christian spiritual thought so why would the average person bother? The mystery cults combined with philosophy might be more palatable to someone in the Christian age but a lot of them are lost and of course, it would require a person to actually read and only a small minority are ever going to get so deep into it. Saying that, Europe never really lost its obsession with Roman paganism. Astrology of course never left us and we had a ~hundred year period where it was trendy to refer to the Christian god as Jove.
>>
>>42935415
>>42940279

I know this has been stated before, and needs to be stated again, but becoming a Christian is not some kind of race-jump or cultural erasure, the people who have us the Edda's for example where still Norse, their culture was still Norse, etc.

If you do not understand that concepts like Norse, Roman and Christian are not similar categories. Then you lack basic logical skills and you are a woman, or using to much drugs.
>>
>>42950632
Well astrology is interesting because it's basically pagan in nature but I guess because it's more "spiritual" than it is religion, it's been allowed so to speak.
I think other gods have simply been suppressed, there was a time in which people believed their gods existed but also others, the idea of a "one true god" is a christian one, as even the jews believed in other gods. As in the hebrew bible, it says Cain was banished to the "other peoples" of the world, acknowledging people other than Adam and Eve and their descendants and it acknowledges other gods as well but that the hebrews were supposed to hold yahweh as above all and not the "only god".
