Have you ever noticed that some people simply have bad luck with computers? I first started to think about this a few years ago when I worked in close proximity to an audio engineer at a business I managed. This fuckin guy could never catch a break with the business computers. They would freeze up, some driver would suddenly stop working, files would corrupt. I'd routinely have to help him through these issues. One time in particular he was having a problem getting something to load and began throwing a fit. The strange thing is that not only was it working just minutes before when I was at his desk, but it also worked when I asked him to step away. This made me reflect on similar circumstances, and I recalled multiple times in my life where my computer would stop working because I was frustrated in some way. I brought this up to one of my network engineer buddies, and he laughed saying, "yeah, some people are just cursed with computers".

This guy was very irascible, quick to anger. He was the type to take his frustration out on others who he thought had no power over him. Could the computer in some way have been influenced by his raw loosh being expelled? Have YOU witnessed anything like this?

I know exactly what you’re describing and I think it’s a great observation because I hadn’t really thought about it. It certainly applies to me too, where if I get all tilted then it seems like every aspect of my system is intentionally obstructing me. It’s hard to separate “actual obstruction” and your own frustration obstructing you in the moment, though. It seems confirmed for me when I see it happen to others.
That said, this sort of thing is kinda my /x/ area of expertise and I’d clarify that many, if not most things in life start getting more difficult the more frustrated you get in the exact same way. The computer gives very instant and standardized feedback so it’s a good way to prove the idea to yourself.
The next step is where you start using it instead of observing it. There’s a Taoist concept called Wu Wei that really helps me out with this. It’s basically “doing without intention”, the idea being that your intentions actually do have power and therefore you restrain them so you don’t trip over your own metaphorical shoelaces and actually give chance the ability to act for you. Life really starts going easy when you’re able to detach just a little and let go. There’s this sweet spot somewhere in between giving a shit and not giving a shit you have to find but there’s gold in there

... He probably mashed the keyboard in a previous, unwitnessed fit of rage, thus causing all those errors. >>/g/

I was going to say that my coworker has that, complete with his computer working when I try to do it. But he's a much more pleasant person than me, and it's probably more that he's less experienced with computers and is more likely to think a program freezing is a big deal whereas I know to patiently end the process and reopen it.

Thanks for articulating that. I have seen that happen with mental things in particular, which makes sense. When I want to feel a certain way, I try to force it and conclude it's just not possible, but then I catch myself feeling that way spontaneously later. Or like how I sometimes get ideas when I'm not actively trying.

Good insight here. Much appreciated. I was probing at the "intention" part. I'm interested in claims that intention and attention can reduce randomness in stochastic systems, whatever that reduction ultimately means I'm not sure. However, this whole computer thing made me think of it.

As far as I could hear, he didn't that time. However, he absolutely abused all manners of external input devices. Quite the character.

No prob. Luck/chance has always been the part of /x/ that drew me right in. There’s definitely something that happens there. The moment where chance becomes reality is an extremely weird place.
One thing that I’ve noticed and also seems to mesh perfectly with what you’ve said is that it can vary in pattern greatly from person to person. Sometimes the frustration limitation imposes on all of us but you mentioned certain people being prone to it happening all the time. The way I’d say that from my perspective has always been
>Lady Luck plays favorites and that’s just how it is.
I really do feel like I have some natural affinity or blessing of luck. It’s followed me through my whole life. I’ve also always known somehow that if I whore it out for money or fame I will immediately lose it. It brings me money anyway so I guess I’m just not supposed to get greedy with it. You could reinterpret that out of the “supernatural” though and say I have some natural intuition for making the emotional component of driving “chance” into “happening“ work well

I understand what you're saying here. I'd like to think that God or however one would like to refer to it acts within that chance, and that slight bias which occurs every so often is the fingerprint of that.

With regards to your relationship with luck, this I also understand. My luck has always been in avoiding disaster and in having opportunities presented. It's not usually a "win the lottery" type thing, although I do feel very lucky and grateful regarding a lot of things. It seems like it just wants to see what I'll do, and if I do the wrong thing it will evaporate. Very much relate to the "whore it out" comment.

You know, the Germanic people had a tradition of casting lots of some sort to form war parties. The idea here was that luck was considered as important as martial prowess, and so groups would like to form around luckiness as well. I always found that interesting.

>it can vary in pattern greatly from person to person

I've been thinking about this. Do you believe this is something fixed from birth? Are there any traditions which discuss altering one's luck, or wagering with "Lady Luck" for a better draw?

>groups would like to form around luckiness as well. I always found that interesting.
That’s unbelievably fucking based. Even as a kid I was always maxxing the luck stat on games like fire emblem before anything else. Why would you not? Huge part of a game with chance in it.
From what I’ve observed, the innate knowledge that you will lose your “gift” for using it the wrong way is your membership card for actually having a gift. It’s just something that you know and other people who don’t have it don’t have anything similar to compare it to. I’m sure this applies to other supernatural abilities that I do not have myself like mediumship but obviously I cannot confirm since I do not have those. Have heard mediums say something very similar, though, about losing something if they use it the wrong way.
There’s a really old religious idea, it might be old Scandinavian, that God (or whatever higher power they were talking about) acts through randomness. It was a very specific thing for them, basically exactly what you’re saying. This was their explanation for how “God” always slips in an out of the cracks between awareness.
The question about being born with it is hard. I’d say you probably can but that’s unlikely to be the only way to acquire such “favor” from Lady Luck. If there are favorites then there’s a reason for the favorites. If you can lose it you can probably gain it. I don’t see why not. I have always seen this as an immutable aspect of myself otherwise, though. Like my hair or eye color. Just how I am.

It's called tech rizz. You got it or you don't.

Sort of like buying a car that you like so much that you don't want to needlessly drive it or park it someplace weird. If you take it too far you don't ever enjoy the car.

yeah. I had a friend that I wouldn't let use my computer because of this. Could probably be turned into a super power with whats coming down the road so quickly.

Enjoyed talking with you on this. Gave me a lot to think about in between meetings at work. Wishing you the.. best of luck

I've heard of those who have had NDEs sometimes deal with computers, lights, and clocks shutting off, glitching out, or dimming.
I can't imagine it's everyone but I wonder what kind of strong resonance one must have to cause this effect.

I know what you mean, though it's not just computers. From my experience, it's objects in general. Clothes ripping faster for some than others, cars breaking down more often, dishes cracking seemingly without explanation etc. It's why I believe in animism. Not necessarily that objects have souls like humans do, but that they also possess a vibrational field of sorts. If you're a nasty, choleric individual, they will absorb your low vibes within themselves and reflect them back at you. It's especially true for machines (like computers or cars) because people tend to unconsciously anthropomorphize them (rationally, you know it's just an appliance, but you may nonetheless assign it personality traits because it makes noise, moves around and provides you with some kind of service, which makes it feel 'alive'. In turn, you project your own emotions onto it more intensely). That's why objects that've once been owned by unpleasant people have that heavy feeling to them.

Unsure man. I used to have the freakiest glitches when a mate passed me the controller. Gta traffic goes haywire and instahit me with 5 stars for nothing, AC2 desynced me by instafall from a horse, just travelling. I fell from a roof into water, and still desynced. Civvies would join me perching (this was not Brotherhood), frequent corrupted sessions on other games as soon as I take over. The Saints Row Freezer is real, don't (happen to) go (fucking around) out of bounds and see that thing once. It follows and will absolutely fuck your game.

Luck is a man-made concept to assert the chances of getting a favorable probability outcome.
Emotions do not affect computers but they do affect the people around you.
Also, using luck to mystify emotions affecting computers? wtf

Out of curiosity, are there any /x/related discussions you do enjoy? If so, which?

I guess it may seem like most of the stuff on /x/ does not interest me, but it does. It is the low effort, borderline schizophrenic posts that bother me.
Psychology and symbolism are my personal favorite but you can find that everywhere if you look hard enough.
