Well I've spent a few lifetimes studying dharmic religion, so I have an alright handle on it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a guru or anything. Im just relatively well educated on Hindu religion and it's earlier Vedic ancestor.
>>
>>43002311
I have no clue what you're trying to ask but I'll say the same thing I normally do: I'm just answering questions about Vedic religion in these threads (for now). This might change in the future.

> I've spent a few lifetimes studying dharmic religion

Yet you are still here....?
>>
>>43002330
The religion itself isn't the problem, it's the lack of education (social and otherwise) unfortunately, in the homeland it's also because proper indigenous plumbing and toiletries were replaced with European plumbing/toiletry. The issue with that is, European designs are great for Europe. Not great for India which has a wildly different climate.
These two things are features of being in the kali yuga. Alot of indians will try to sell cope to you and insist we aren't in the dark age, but we are. Failing health and education on a global scale is one of the symptoms of that.
>>
>>43002332
Yes, I don't really have an excuse. Me being back is solely my own fault.

Well clearly before the white man introduced his tricknology
Indians didn't require the need to poop.
>>
Or really the white mans tricknology is to confusing/complex for indians,
who where better off as tribal animals pooping in the woods.
and TBF their is a valid argument that we are all better off as animals.
But that argument like communism ignores how savage savages are to each other.
>>
How does

Bhagavad Gita 14:15
rajasi pralayaṁ gatvā karma-saṅgiṣu jāyate
tathā pralīnas tamasi mūḍha-yoniṣu jāyate

“Those who die in the mode of passion are born among those attached to action; and those who die in the mode of ignorance are born in the wombs of the irrational.”

Relate to the fast-food industry and Cheeseburgers? Can you give other examples of Passion and Ignorance?

People be like the native Americans where playful peacfull forest spirits.
MEANWHILE these savages would pick the most attractive women in there tribe
and skin her alive to wear her skin as a magic ritual.
People be like the Indians are so wise and non materialistic.
MEANWHILE these savages would burn their wife's slaves and possessions alive
to bring them with them to the afterlife.
A Practice that HAD TO BE BANNED by the British in 1829.

Kinda yeah, it's not the ONLY issue but it's part of it.
think of it like this; India has Extreme Weather. European weather is a lot colder and dry generally than India. India is typically hot and humid. One of the features of that is it's prone to a lot of rain.
Indigenous plumbing systems were designed to handle regular monsoon weather and the floods that come that. The infrastructure that exists in India now is just completely unequipped and unable to handle the weather, which makes it prone to breaking down and leaking into the land, the drinking/bathing water. One of the worse issues is that when it breaks from monsoon issues, the land it's in gets prone to erosion and mud slides from the excess waste and water.
Don't get me wrong, it's not like this can only be blamed on the Europeans. European colonialism already happened. Indians need to grow up already and fix the long term issues the greedy and lazy elites in their country are profiting off of. It's absolutely absurd that entire regions have no water or toiletry because the European plumbing broke from the climate and they can't properly fix it.

And here’s a post I found that touches on all this
>tfw you finally realise that "baal" means "owner/master/lord"
>tfw you realise that "baal" is the patron deity of soldiers, merchants, sailors and farmers
>tfw you realise that "baal worship" is essentially a form of authoritarianism
>tfw you realise that the symbol of baal (or gods equivalent to baal) is an eagle, eye, lightning bolt, laurel wreath and bull.
>tfw when you realise that most states all over the world have an eagle, eye, lightning bolt, laurel wreath, bull or horns as their symbols
>tfw you realise that the traditional enemy of baal is a snake or sea-serpent
>tfw you realise that the snake is a symbol of chaos and anarchy
>tfw you realise that the combination of an eagle and a snake is effectively a dragon, aka true satanism
>tfw you realise that satanism, at its core, is the belief that you should be god, having supreme power over everyone else (authoritarian baal) and should do whatever you want without order or constraint (anarchic serpent), thus combining the serpent and the eagle, making you the dragon
The thing that anon is missing though is you must defeat/tame the dragon
Like fun fact there’s a story out there about Jesus defeating a dragon that was removed from the Bible
>>

Well, the general thing you're asking me is how this rebirth issue relates to current problems I think..? The answer is pretty simple; we are in the kali yuga in this universe.
The general thing going on in the kali yuga is that people are extremely averse to dharma and everything that means. Basic things covered in dharma are
>Mindfulness/embodiment
>Religion
>Truth
>Justice
>Phenomenon/reality
>Tolerance/mercy
Etc. there's more but these are some of the basics.
The manifeststion of this is as a kind of anti-embodiment. You're using passion as a means of escapism due to an ignorance of dharma.

In the modern age, we see these twin issues arise particularly as Convenience Culture. Everyone wants everything all the time and for it to be as convenient and easy as possible. Global culture is insanely nihilistic and consumerism is how it deals with that. They just don't want to think or feel. They want the illusion of thinking or feeling and an easy brand they can associate with.
>Can you list other examples of passion/ignorance
You're asking about the Tri-Guna (three natures/modes)
Rajas (passion) is gonna contain anything that you get obsessive about. It drives desire and attachment. When it's dominant it's greedy and constantly moving in action and obscures wisdom.

We can see a good example with this in people who are constantly scrolling on their phone.

With tamas (ignorance) it's quality is of dullness and lethargy. It's an apathy to life itself because you don't understand it. If in rajasic mode youre scrolling because it feels good, in tamasic you're doing it knowing it's bad for you...and you simply don't care.

You can take these two polarities and apply them to much of global culture at this point. Scrolling, short form videos, AI, fast food, etc etc etc.

Ananke and Chronos (often spelled Chronus)
are the primordial deities of fate and time in ancient Greek mythology.

In early Orphic creation myths, they are considered two of the most powerful foundational forces in the universe.

The Primordial Entities
Ananke: personifies inevitability, necessity, and compulsion.
Chronos: personifies empirical time

The Creation of the Cosmos
According to Orphic traditions, they emerged self-formed at the beginning of the universe,
>often envisioned as incorporeal, serpentine figures.
>Together, they intertwined around the primordial world egg of creation.
>By applying immense pressure, they crushed and split the egg open, dividing its contents to form the earth, sea, sky, and the ordered universe.

I COULD....but I don't wanna. Im trying to keep these threads focused on just questions about Vedic religion & Hinduism. Getting into other dharmic religions (Buddhism, sikhism, etc) and their understanding in Hindu religion starts making things murky and loses the plot.
On top of that, there isn't really a singular position on Buddha and Buddhism anyway. Hinduism isn't technically one religion, it's a bajillion of them that orbit around Vedic orthopraxy. So different lineages will have different opinions or none at all.

In Persian (tātār, meaning "mounted messenger" or courier),
In Chinese, the term was recorded as Tantan or
>Dadan.
As Genghis Khan united the nomadic tribes in the 13th century, Persian and Arabic historians adopted the word as تاتار (Tātār)
to refer broadly to the invading Mongol-Turkic armies. In Persian, the word also took on the secondary meaning of "mounted messenger" or "courier"

The word entered Ottoman Turkish as tاتار (Tatar)
In the Ottoman Empire, it acquired the specialized occupational meaning of "court messenger" or courier
(ulak) alongside its use as an ethnic identifier.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqJXxHi6RwQ

>The most common and standard Chinese word pronounced dàdǎn is 大胆 (traditional: 大膽), which means "bold," "daring," or "audacious"

DaDan
Also means Great Elixir / Great Dane
Historically refers to the ultimate alchemical "golden elixir" (Jindan)
sought by Taoists for immortality.

In modern language, it is also the literal translation for the Great Dane dog breed.

>It also means Carrying Pole from which the noodles get their name.

Not to be that guy but an independent India (since the late 1940s) has had decades to replace, expand, maintain, and adapt its infrastructure. So why is it still known for being a nation of street shitters while monsoon-prone countries like Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Vietnam have fairly sophisticated infrastructure to handle that and people generally have proper toilets to shit in? They’re much smaller and yet seem to be much better in terms of quality of life. Maybe that explains why they mostly threw away their old Hindu beliefs in favor of the truthnvke that was Buddha. I mean you can’t blame the British for your own stupidity. Sorry, that isn’t really how it works in the 2020s now. Why can’t the Hindus get their shit together and build a better and cleaner world for themselves before professing some kind of superiority to the rest of the world? Why can’t you people see the truth Buddha laid before you and understand you threw it away for the incomplete picture of the various “vedic” traditions?

Also, as far as the other southeast Asian countries...yes.
I feel like you're trying to get a rise out of me, but you're exactly right on the fact that India has had years to adapt and change its infrastructure. They could've remade into a paradise but they just haven't. Colonialism did a lot of damage, but the reality is that India is the one fucking itself over now. They have been for years. The government is hopelessly corrupt.

this is why i mentioned the epicurean domain, puberty is a cortisol induced stress response induced by the pituatry via rampant apoptosis, ie when one is dying too much to sustain growth is no longer possible the body switches from a paradigm of growth to one of seeding and death therefore if one wants large offspring the creation of a low cortisol domain is paramount.

No, I mean three hours of you spamming the thread so that it's completely unusable. You decided that if I wasn't going to immediately respond to you, you'd spend three hours absolutely flooding the thread with spam so that nobody else could navigate it.

Part of why I didn't respond to you to begin with was that the way you formatted your questions to begin with were low effort, a couple don't even make sense, and they were all paired up with the schizobabble image that tries to equate Shiva and Hebrew gematria as somehow being interrelated when, frankly, they aren't. I figured responding to you was a bad idea because you were likely waiting for an opportunity to spam.

It is not possible to limit oneself to talking only about Hinduism since it has been historically influenced by other cultures. They were part of a larger group called the Proto-Indo-Iranians who split geographically. One group migrated to India (the Indo-Aryans), while the other settled in the Iranian plateau (the Proto-Iranians).

Centuries after this physical separation, a profound religious and philosophical revolution occurred in both regions, effectively creating a mirror image where what one group considered holy, the other considered demonic.

Zoroastrianism (motheistic) views the Hindu gods (devas) as demons or gods who deceive humanity (avesta), and the Hindu demons (asuras) as the forces of good (ahura).

We can conclude that Indians and Iranians each chose one side and created a mythology where their belief is considered correct and the other evil.

Which side would you choose? From a Gnostic perspective (spiritual pessimism), they would say that both positions are harmful.

They were part of a larger group called the Proto-Indo-Iranians who split geographically. Yes! Well, here's where things get interesting. "Hinduism" itself is actually rather new in terms of Vedic religions. Like you said, the indo-iranians used to be one group who split apart. This has connections also to, in some effect, the indo-europeans as much as the indo-aryans & proto Iranians.
This is where talking about Vedic religion becomes fun, because we can start getting into the religious culture and customs of these people and the harappan/indus valley and how it's changed.
>Zoroastrianism (motheistic) views the Hindu gods (devas) as demons or gods who deceive humanity (avesta), and the Hindu demons (asuras) as the forces of good (ahura).
So, Ill count this as a Hindu question...it's not that easy. Zoroastrianism itself isn't really monotheist. This is a new development being plastered onto it due to geopolitical pressure from Christian & Islamic forces. Zoroastrianism is dualistic and monolatrous.

The reality is it's not as easy as saying that they simply switched around which one is good and which one is bad. The zoroastrians actually have a few Indian devas in their retinue of worship, they just call them Ahuras instead. There's one avatar of Krishna they have and enjoy greatly. Mithra is also worshipped in both religions.

(Cont)
>>
>>43003427
The zoroastrian system when it split off from Vedic religion, evolved a methodology where various divinites would go through a cultural vetting process. Either they ended up as an ahura under Mazda, or a deva under Angra Mainyu.

For followers of Vedic religions, Asuras aren't totally bad. Some are good! One of the older terms to invoke all divinities supplicates them all as Asuras. This prayer is still used.

Zoroastrianism and Vedic religion aren't inherently opposed. They generally swap around and share divinities more often than youd think. The fighting is more of a modern issue than a historical, clan based one. (They do exist, but theyve changed. Zoroastrians are trying to reform their religion to avoid genocide, so it's more complex now)

Now where things get interesting is that we can use the ancient indo-aryans to speak about ancient, pre-historic cultures and how they're recorded to have existed in Vedic context.

People don't really realize that Vedic religion itself is a reform religion, which says prior to it another society similar to the Vedic one existed and is now gone. This makes the context of the indo-aryans and proto-iranian split endlessly fascinating, as well as the migrations of the indo-europeans and similar cultures.
>>
>>43003427
>>43003430
>They were part of a larger group called the Proto-Indo-Iranians who split geographically. One group migrated to India (the Indo-Aryans), while the other settled in the Iranian plateau (the Proto-Iranians).
Spot on! The Indo-Iranians split from a common ancestor (sharing roots with the broader Indo-Europeans), setting the stage for both Vedic religion and early Iranian traditions.
>Zoroastrianism (monotheistic) views the Hindu gods (devas) as demons... and the Hindu demons (asuras) as the forces of good (ahura).
Be careful here. While the linguistic flip (daeva = demon in Avestan, deva = god in Sanskrit; ahura = god in Avestan, asura originally meant powerful spirit/lord in early Vedas) is real, Zoroastrian monotheism isn't forced by Abrahamic pressure. Zarathustra centered the religion on Ahura Mazda as the supreme creator.

The debate among scholars is over how to classify its intense cosmic dualism alongside lower-level divine beings (Yazatas), but the core monotheism is ancient, not modern.

The reality is fascinating: they didn't just play Mad Libs with good and bad guys. Because they share a common root, they retained shared divinities. Mithra (Mitra in the Vedas) is worshiped in both as a guardian of contracts and cosmic order. Other shared figures include Aryaman and Yama (who became King Yima in Persian tradition).

Zoroastrianism underwent a prophetic reform that rejected the older polytheistic sacrificial cults shared with early Indo-Aryans, turning older common gods into daevas (false gods). Meanwhile, in later Vedic religion, asuras trended toward becoming malevolent entities, though early Vedic texts still used asura respectfully for supreme gods.

Ancient Indo-Aryans and Iranians didn't fight holy wars against each other; their split was geographic, linguistic, and reform-driven.
>>
>>43003485
Gonna have to disagree with the monotheism aspect. We know this part isn't true just because of the history catalogued through Persian empire.
Monotheism doesn't really form a core to the religion as monotheism is a newer invention. Zoroastrians feel a lot of pressure to monotheize but the actual religion itself regards ahura Mazda as the supreme god, with various deities (not just the yazata, there are other kinds of ahura!) beneath him, acting somewhat as extensions of him. The secondary divinities beneath the yazata are the amesha spenta. Some of which are various Vedic gods, with the list expanding and contracting depending on culture and region. I think now a days, Iranian zoroastrians include a few sufis in the mix.

Uhhhh, honestly it's actually a bit similar to what happened initially with Judaism in the levant. Judaism was originally monolatrous and has since evolved into being sole monotheism, while Zoroastrianism still functioning as dualist-monolatry (for now).
>>
>>43003527
>Zoroastrianism underwent a prophetic reform that rejected the older polytheistic sacrificial cults shared with early Indo-Aryans, turning older common gods into daevas (false gods). Other than the rejection of polytheism I'd say I agree generally. Again zoroastrians are monolatrous, this is different from either rejecting or accepting polytheism. It's a kind of "alter" to polytheism.

Where the two split off from, principally, is the fire sacrifice. The yajna. Zoroaster's reforms centered the religion of the Iranians away from mazdaism focusing on Mazda-varuna to a new monolatrous-dualist religion. Alot of this really wound up being about centering the yajna and usage of soma as the principal duty of Persian religious life.

They're both doing sort of similar things, insofar as that yogic symbolism is partially retained in zorastrianism and changed. But this yogic symbolism is different from modern Hindu symbolism, insofar as that the symbolism used by zoroastrians relates to the yajna and it's symbolic rendering of the inner fire.

You've got the machinery completely inverted.

1. The Hierarchy is Backwards:
You’ve got the Amesha Spentas and the Yazatas flipped. The Amesha Spentas ("Bespoke Immortals") are not beneath the Yazatas they are the supreme, direct archangelic hypostases and primordial emanations of Ahura Mazda himself (embodying concepts like Good Thought, Truth, and Righteous Dominion). They sit at the absolute apex of the spiritual hierarchy. The Yazatas ("those worthy of worship") are the lower-tier genii, angels, and functional divinities (Mithra, Anahita, Atar) that populate the ranks below them.

2. Zoroaster Didn’t "Center" the Haoma Cult He Declared War on It:
Your claim that Zoroaster’s reform was about doubling down on the yasna and haoma ritual completely misreads his entire prophetic project. Zarathustra wasn't a conservative high priest preserving the old Indo-Iranian party line; he was a radical, iconoclastic revolutionary.

He openly attacked the old ecstatic, bloody, animal-sacrificing, and hallucinogenic haoma cults practiced by the rival Karpan (priests) and Kavan (warlords). He didn't center the old rituals he sanitized and moralized them, shifting the focal point from a chaotic tribal booze-and-blood fest to an uncompromising internal war between Asha (truth/cosmic order) and Druj (deception). Later Sasanian orthodox Zoroastrianism inevitably dragged the old folk practices back in, but Zarathustra detested what those ecstatic cults represented.

3. The Inner Fire:
Where you are entirely correct is the interiority of the fire symbolism. When the ritualized yasna focuses on Atar (fire), it stops being a primitive campfire bribe to the gods and mutates into a psychospiritual technology of mental purity turning the physical flame into an external mirror for the inner spark of divine discernment.

Checked *beep-boop*
> What does it mean to be a Deva vs. an Asura, and why do their roles flip?
* **Deva:** Rooted in the Proto-Indo-European *dyeu* (shining/heavenly), Devas are radiant intelligences maintaining cosmic order (*Ṛta*). In Zoroastrianism, *Daevas* were demoted to dark illusions when Zoroaster purged the old ecstatic storm-cults.
* **Asura:** Originally cosmic lords of breath, might, and binding law (shared by early Varuna and the Ahuras). They grew malevolent in later Puranic tiers, while *Ahura* ascended in Persia. It was a profound linguistic and theological divergence, not a petty cartoon swap.

> Mitra-Varuna & Rahu-Ketu? How is Indra an ant?
* **Mitra-Varuna:** The sovereign dyad of cosmic architecture. Mitra rules the solar covenant of human contracts and harmony; Varuna commands the abyssal, terrifying waters of cosmic law and destiny.
* **Rahu & Ketu:** The shadow nodes of the moon. Swarbhanu's severed immortal head (Rahu) and serpentine tail (Ketu) eclipse the luminaries, personifying karmic shadow, illusion, and spiritual awakening.
* **Indra, an ant:** In the *Braivarta Purana*, an ego-drunk Indra commands a grand palace. Vishnu, disguised as a boy, reveals a procession of ants—each one an Indra of a previous, dissolved universe, shattering Indra's pride against infinite time.

> Mount Mandara, Vasuki, & Nandi?
* **Mandara & Vasuki:** During the *Samudra Manthan* (Churning of the Milky Ocean), Mount Mandara served as the churning rod, stabilized by Vishnu’s tortoise avatar (*Kurma*), while the great serpent Vasuki was wrapped around it as the cosmic rope to churn immortality from chaos.
* **Nandi:** The sacred white bull representing unshakeable righteousness, raw strength, and total surrender of ego at Shiva’s gate.
>>
> Blue-skinned mummies & Shiva’s hair?
* **Blue mummies:** A blend of historical tattooing practices (like Scythian and Celtic warriors utilizing blue woad) and esoteric internet mythos. No ancient human group naturally possessed blue skin.
* **Shiva's hair:** Fiery red-brown (*kapardin*) and tawny—**just like Rudra**, the howling Vedic storm-god and lord of the wild from whom Shiva directly evolved, matching his raw, untamed ascetic fire rather than pop-culture blue.

>Hierarchy
Really? I'm not sure about that... My understanding was amesha spenta was generally beneath the yazata as they included the fravashi of the dead and various other holy beings, where as the yazata were acting like "fingers" of ahura Mazda.
>Zoroaster Didn’t "Center" the Haoma Cult He Declared War on It:
The haoma cult is still extremely important in Zoroastrianism, BUT. I will concede he did declare war on the animal sacrifice aspect of it, which at that time in Vedic religion was still, unfortunately, quite common. This was a major sticking point between his reform vs the Vedic religion at the time.

Otherwise, the yajna I don't think has ever *not* been central in the worship. Fire and light are linked very extensively to Mazda and are used to represent the inner fire and, ultimately, goodness and purity. It's externalizing the return to Mazda. Lies are burned away for truth.

Haoma is also a yazata, worth mentioning.
>3. The Inner Fire:
Where you are entirely correct is the interiority of the fire symbolism. Well yes, the yajna was never supposed to be a bribe. This was a major issue was that at the time of zoroaster, a lot of the religion devolved into ritualism for the sake of ritualism.
>>
>>43003632
Let’s clear the air on the hierarchy, because you’re mixing up the executive board with middle management.

The Amesha Spentas are not subordinate to the Yazatas. They are the supreme, uncreated hypostases of Ahura Mazda Good Thought (Vohu Manah), Truth (Asha), Sovereign Power, and so on. They aren't just random "holy beings" or ancestral ghosts; they are the literal structural limbs of God’s own consciousness. The Yazatas ("those worthy of worship") are the sprawling cosmic bureaucracy beneath them thousands of lesser divinities, including the Fravashis (ancestor spirits), Atar (fire), and yes, even Haoma himself. Your "fingers of Ahura Mazda" metaphor actually belongs to the Amesha Spentas; the Yazatas are the divine taskforce executing order in the material trenches down below.

On the ritual front, however, you check me entirely and you nailed the diagnosis. The system hadn't just become a "bribe"; it had calcified into dead, mechanical wizardry where the Karpan priests traded blood and juice to manipulate the cosmos without a shred of ethical skin in the game. That’s why Zarathustra went scorched-earth on the bloody animal sacrifices while preserving the internal, psycho-spiritual technology of the yasna.

Haoma is a Yazata, and that ecstatic plant-communion survived the purge precisely because it could be re-engineered from a tribal party-drug into an inner awakening of divine clarity. You and the ancient reformers are speaking the exact same language here: burning away the dead weight of empty ritualism to find the real fire underneath.
>>
>>43003643
Huh, damn, I was completely wrong on the hierarchy. Thanks for clearing that up. It's an area I was apparently weak on!
Yeah, this is an interesting point because that's also what was supposed to be happening in the Vedic analog.

This is where we start getting into the question of ancient cultures. Vedic religion starts off telling us that it's a reform, and that prior to it the exact same issue happened. People watered down the religion into nothing and got obsessed with passion/delusion. Vedic religion is the response to that, having been a revival/reform instigated by the sapta rishi and manu.
By the time Vedic religion is established, similar thing happens and we start seeing reform and split movements. Such as our friends the Zoroastrians with their focus on spiritual liberation and the abolishing of the blood sacrifice and their resanctification of soma/haoma.
>>
>>43003661
both traditions are chronic reform movements masquerading as primordial restorations.

They didn't diverge because they hated each other; they diverged because they were both looking at a decaying, spiritually bankrupt ancestral template and desperately trying to rescue it.

Look at how the Vedic tradition structures its own mythos. The Saptarishi (Seven Sages) and Manu aren’t just decorative genealogies; they are the cosmic emergency crew deployed at the start of every Manvantara to reboot a world sliding into entropy, passion, and spiritual amnesia.

Where it gets fascinating is how the two branches chose to cure the exact same rot:

The Iranian Cure (The Prophetic Rupture): Zarathustra looked at the tribal, blood-soaked, ecstasy-addled animal sacrifices of the late Bronze Age steppe and said, burn it down. He slashed the messy polytheism, weaponized dualism, and built an absolute fortress of ethical choice around Ahura Mazda and the sacred fire. It was a top-down, revolutionary software update.

The Vedic Cure (The Recursive Cannibalism): The Indo-Aryans initially took the opposite route they doubled down on the hyper-complex, terrifyingly bureaucratic machinery of the Yajna and external sacrifice, treating the ritual as the literal engineering code holding the universe together. But look at what happens the Upanishads arrive and systematically cannibalize the entire ritual structure from the inside out. They declare that the gods are just masks, and the real altar is the breath (Prana) and the self (Atman).

Both traditions diagnosed the exact same disease ritualism rotting into dead magic and moral blindness. Iran built an absolute moral binary to purge the lie; India built an infinite, metaphysical mirror maze to dissolve the illusion.

You’re looking at two branches of the same family tree staring at the same burning house and running out opposite doors, each convinced their fire extinguisher was the right one.

In India and generally the harappan, the Vedic peoples undergo several reforms from within. Though we don't see a complete ban on animal sacrifice until we enter the Hindu era of Vedic religion.

This isn't to say it (blood sacrifice) was flat out accepted always, but it was fairly common even with Vedic practitioners critiquing it as a distortion of earlier practices for the yajnas.

The Sravakas wound up being the final reason they abolished the blood sacrifice. But we see Vedic religion beginning to move away from this when the latest development of the vedas (the upanishads) manifests and ritual life gets resubsumed back into yoga and not simply rote performance of gesture.

Though at that point the Vedic religion split down the middle between lay ritual specialist yogis and wandering ascetic yogis. With a wide birth of many things between the two.

The really secret is knowing what religion is really about and for.

Yes exactly. This itself winds up being metaphoric of the process of death/birth/rebirth and ultimately enlightenment. More of that mythos as yogic symbolism.

Interesting points raised. More to think about.
>Gods are masks
This isn't QUITE accurate but it's also not inaccurate either.
The devas are quasi-literal. It's a bit similar to how uh, archetypes are treated by jung. If a regional or family deity gets considered as ishvara, then that applies immediately. But that necessitates getting into brahman with form and brahman without form.
How they (devas) are considered in the scale of literalism differs dependent on region and lineage... but it's notable that prana and Atman are always important within the Vedic religion. The issue arrose in the early period with people ignoring prana-atman for ritual that had become devoid of mindfulness that makes it functional.

But like you said, upanishad yogis here saw a decaying ancestral template and called for its revival. That was a great point.

>It's a bit extreme as a position I think, but I can see your point and I'll h
ave to mull it over a lot when the thread is done.

Ritual is important, but dead ritualism is a problem.
