I want to ask something for people who know/have studied extensively The Gospels. Not The Bible; spiritually, what would happen if someone only followed the words of Jesus he says on The Gospels? Nothing else, as in, they do not follow the Hebrew Bible or the New Testament. Only The Gospels (See John 14). I am not asking Christians, I'm very sorry, I'm not doing so because they're a lot of the times biased by their religion
You'd end up reading ancient Alan Watts, is it worth it? Seemingly so
>>43066734Back to the OT Torah laws you would go. Especially without Paul who invented that salvation comes from belief. Jesus taught that you must follow Torah commandments to be saved. Many of his words are direct literal quotations from the OT. His biography is entirely invented based on OT writings. The Lord's Prayer is constructed from Second Temple Jewish messianic prayers. You would be living a Qumran Essene lifestyle with ritual bathing for purification, communal living, sacred meals and celibacy awaiting the imminent coming of the kingdom of God in practically two more weeks. You would have to become a 1st century apocalyptic Jewish death cultist."Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them... not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law"
>>43066891Depending if you insist on the Church tradition of the four canonical gospels (matthew, mark, luke and john) your theology may also take a gnostic turn (i.e. believing that the material world is evil). So you still have choices what you want to believe since there are many different gospels with contradictory teachings.
>>43066734Jesus was a cool guy (and doesn't afraid of anything)Following his teaching would be very hard, but spiritually rewarding. So go ahead follow Jesus start with selling all your belongings and give it to the poor. Prepare for a life of voluntary poverty, enemy-love, radical forgiveness, dependence on God rather than planning, and preferential service to the vulnerable, the poor, the sick, the minorities, the foreigeners. Good for you and you might actually enter heaven after you die.
>>43066891>Jesus taught that you must follow Torah commandments to be savedSalvation comes from Christ alone, the theif on the cross supports this. We cannot live in such a way to perfectly save ourselves, only Christ can, and did.
>>43066946its explicitly a thread about the words of jesus, not mainstream christianity and the pauline epistles, you absolute nigger
>>43067012John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.
>>43067088Matthew 19:17 Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandmentsLuke 10:25-26 what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law?its contradictory because different gospel authors offer different perspectives. John corresponds to Philo of Alexandria's Hellenistic-Jewish and Platonic Logos theology - "the word made flesh", i.e. Torah scripture [the word] being turned into the biography of a living man [inventing a story, "making it flesh"]
>>43067112which is to say John points back to the Torah commandments
The confusion comes from people thinking God telling us to keep the commandments = salvation and not just something we should do once we're already saved by faith alone
