People have always used technology to understand the world around them. For a long time we talked about the brain as like a clock, with our biology being essentially complex gears that turn the handles that move our limbs. Now that we have computers we often talk about being "programmed", or that our universe is nothing more than intricate software. There's a story about this old-timey schizophrenic who described his body being controlled by a "loom made of air", in the way that crazy people today might speak about government implants.I wonder sometimes if technology, things like the steam engine, the Internet, now LLMs, are us simply reflecting the nature of reality back at ourselves.
