The reason they do it is so not to shock us in obe's, I guess they said that in the movie to. basically all life come from the same source energy which is conciousness. when we are asleep or in obe's we lose the veil of forgetfullness (the Ra material) which gives us access to other layers of reality which is inhabited by other enteties. Some of those are benevolent and present as animals. It also has something to do with we can't perceive what we don't understand or have a frame of reference for.
