Am I going crazy or has there always been "about 8 billion people?" I remember even in the 2000s there were "about 8 billion humans on earth today" but for some reason every estimate i find now says there were 5 billion then and 8 billion now? Is this some kinda mandingo effect? Lol.

I remember looking at used books one day. I was looking at a copy of The Bell Curve. An old man approached me and said it was a very good book. He asked if I knew how many people there are on the Earth. I said I thought there were almost 7 billion. He said I was close. There were 6 billion people. A couple days later I was reading the news, the population had ticked up above 7 billion. I think he was the type of guy who learns a fact and then can't imagine that the fact could change over time. Like he read somewhere that the world population was 6 billion, and that means it's going to be exactly 6 billion, no more and no less, forever.
