It was to give us technology, an act of malcontent since they knew what we'd use it for. To them it's like arming crackheads to clear a residential area.
They stand to lose nothing from losing a ship, they can just make more. Their vessels too, which are closer to mechsuits for the soul. Kill one, and its spirit returns to the facility where another is being made.
