One of the best theories for the origin of the swastika is that it physically represents the Big Dipper as it rotates around the Pole Star, each arm of the swastika being the Dipper during the solstices and equinoxes. More importantly, the swastika is taken to represent the cosmos rotating around a supreme spiritual principle connected to the earth's north pole.
While meditating on this topic, I suddenly wondered if 'They', being the counter to all things true and good, would (at least among themselves) use an inverted symbol, taken from the sky of the south pole. After some looking, I found out that the southern sky lacks a pole star as perfect as Polaris, but the closest one is part of a constellation that could be suitable for such a symbol. This constellation is Octans, and the name is not taken from any kind of eight-pointed or sided geometry, but rather the octant, the navigational tool. On its own, the octant bears a striking resemblance to the Freemasonic compass and ruler. If we then apply the same rules we applied to the Dipper, that is, turning and simplifying the shape, we end up with something perhaps similar to the Maltese cross, but that could be a stretch.
