Why is the second coming taking so long? Numerous times in the Bible Jesus claims it will happen during the lifetimes of the people present at his first coming. The earliest followers (can be seen in the Epistles and the way Mark and Matthew are structured) believed that the Second Coming/Eschaton was imminent. Obviously it didn't happen.
