Is there any ice skaters here? Figure, dance, speed, freestyle, or even hockey can be included.

Not many places to talk about it.

I like figure skating
>>
for me its rollerblading on the treadmill wearing shoes
>>
if it was a real extreme sport they would call it knife shoe dancing

Whatever you call it you're still dancing on knives.

Well anyways I've been taking group lessons for the past 4 months I guess.

Having a good time, haven't really had the same feeling in any other sport when I actually start to accomplish something I was struggling with. The technical aspect of it is actually really fun.

yeah there's not that many places to talk about it. best place is just chat up some decently skilled random skater at the rink and ask for tips if you're struggling.

YAYYY WAS LOOKING FOR THIS THREAD

For the summer vacations i've been practicing my edges a lot, but learning without guidance is very frustrating for a sport as precise as figure skating requires you to be.
>Shoulders? Facing the wrong way and you fail.
>Hips? Gotta mind them too, not too low, not too high, better move them with precise timing or you fail.
Not to mention that you're constantly squatting and extending your muscles. Having to mind all of these things alone when you've barely got 1 year of experience under your belt seems like an impossible task.
The thing is, i don't even mind grinding 'til i find what works and what doesn't, but it's sharing the public rink that's got me frustrated. How am i supposed to feel safe falling when i know that at any moment a hockey skates dude might just speed towards me at 30/kmh? These men and women do not know how to stop at the speed that they're going at. In fact, my arm still hurt from the last time a guy just fucking rammed into me at uncontrolled speed.
Yet, no matter what, I find myself craving the ice badly each and every day. It's the allure that no matter how shitty you are each session makes room for improvement. It's the feeling of gliding, mastering elements and freedom which makes it all worth it. I love the smell of damp ice, the feeling of community in this singular sport, the pain of losing as much as the joy of winning.

You should look up this figure skater

Take up hockey so you can learn ice awareness while protected by pads. Take up judo so you can learn to fall and recover properly.

Man I've been struggling with inside 3 turns for like an entire month and I feel like I'm progressing slow as fuck. I get over the turn and just stall, which makes me think I need to go faster or bend more, but I just can't get it.
I've got both my outsides good enough to just throw out on a whim at least though.

Otherwise I feel like I'm going along pretty decently, but I'm trying to build a strong foundation before doing jumps or anything more advanced. It's hard to stay motivated though when it feels like you're doing basic kiddy stuff all the time.

Being in a safe environment makes you learn faster but if there are no safe environment then i will have to do without, you are right sensei
>>

Haha thats a funny way to think. Unfortunately my time table only allows for one discipline at a time but you've indeed shown me the things that i should be working on

Have you tried minding your hips and shoulders? For outside the free leg should be extended as much as possible with open hips and toes facing the side (facing right if ur doing left outside egde forward 3turn)

Also ive found that having an arm extended in front of me help directing the turn.

To learn to master your basics you should definitely check out the youtube channel style skating, the woman speaking is great, it's almost like having your personal coach with how precise her descriptions are

Yeah I’m watching that, and I do got a private coach that constantly hits me on my lack of arms. But she’s pretty happy with the turns themselves and says it’s mostly just needing to smooth things out and get more muscle memory. But it’s still a struggle and I hate how slow this feels compared to everything else being so easy.

Honestly considering other people I talk to I think a large part is my outside edges suck, and if I had to guess it’s cause my feet are a bit fucked so I really need to strain myself to get into the outside position, and I think that’s hurting the post rotation glide.

On the bright side, afternoons are dead now that kids are in school. It’s so much easier to get practice when there’s only like 3 girls on the entire rink.

Sometimes it just happens man. Personally i been stuck on twizzles and scratch spins for two months now and i'm boutta explode. Unless i go to classes any ice that i step my foot on is ruined by hockey players, im losing my passion i can feel it. The only times i feel truly unburdened is when the ice is empty and smooth, but like that happens at public sessions
