Mountain Biking General

Guess we should make a new if any of the regular anons still want to post about mtbing and haven't fucked off completely from this website. Spring-time in the NH so I guess those that don't bother riding in the winter will be getting back out now.
>>
I can't remember what all the stuff in the old OPs was - did anyone use or read it? - should have made this new before the two old ones got deleted from the archive then so it could be just copy & pasted.
>>
Hot clear day here, like it has been for a good couple of weeks.
>64° in April

>>
Was everyone else too retarded to figure out the new captcha, a bot or just sick of this place?
>>
I'm been having a great time. I went out three times so far. Not being able to ride the trails in the winter sorta sucks. Maybe next year we'll try skiing..

I need to tune my MTB suspension. I'm getting a lot of pedal strikes..

It was kinda junk. Just shitty mtb buying info. Considering we just went the whole winter and part of spring with no thread we could stand to get some newbies asking the same questions.

Also hello from Sedona, my dad and I are on a trip here. I was not prepared for the desert. I drank the 2 liters of water I brought and got sunburnt.
Tech is pretty fun. Lots of exposure on the tech sections which makes them difficult mentally. But we're just chilling on the blues.

yes

fat tire bikes are more fun than you might think. you do have to figure out the clothing angle before going down the rabbit hole and the right conditions are inconsistent but you can get up to some shenanigans on nice freeze-thaw crusty matrix.

>>260807
try the Maah Daah Hey at some point in your life. Maybe not this year, the federal library is opening and everything is going to be bullshit for a while.

>I need to tune my MTB suspension. I'm getting a lot of pedal strikes..
On the same boat but with several down tube strikes with rocks. Waited a month to get the Vivid tune kit delivered to me. Its mostly rebound speed which is too low. I'll switch from R25(progressive) to R53(linear) to speed thing up and lower the compression from C34 to either C30/26. On the zeb I'll just put a go with the light rebound and burnishing the lowers. I just need to mechanic to answer me back, mf left me on delivered and my suspension feels like crap

Oh in terms pf suspension tuning, I was just gonna set the set the air pressure to my weight. I ordered the special shock pump that goes to like 250 psi.

I've noticed may rear shock is weeping a little oil. I'm uncertain how big of a problem that is

should I get this horn or keep screaming yiddish curses when I need to pass a little girl on the bike trail?

>should I get this horn to scream yiddish curses when I need to pass a little girl on the bike trail?
Yes, mass produce in China and sell cheap all over the world.
>>
What kind of psi do you like to run in ykur MTB tires? I knkw it goes by rider weight. Tire size etc. What's your useg.

I want to say I'm running about 22 to 25 psi on my 29er. I recently rented a mountain bike and the dude who set my psi went to max 40 psi. I cant ride that. So i had to bleed a bunch of air out on the trail.
>>
It also depends on terrain and conditions
>>
I'm a 30 year old NEET this summer until Fall when I start school. gonna mountain bike multiple times a week probably.

How will you buy a mountain bike if youre a neet?
>>
>>263196
in october last year i was posting in these threads and some anons helped me find a good deal on FB marketplace

Noice.

I'm retarded. I jist ordered this seatpost offset rail. I had to fork over $180.
For that. Thats so retarded. I really wish there was an ali express dupe of this.

Hopefully this finally sprts out the fitment issue I'm having with my medium size mountain bike.

For whatever reason, it feel like ass is hanging off the back pf the seat. I tried a longer stem. This sorta resolved the issue but caused a worse problem. Now my legs arent in the most neutral pedaling position. I need tk go back tonthe shorter stem.. 60mm stem is too much and also made the steerimg very heavy.. imstead I will go back to 45mm dtem and try it overpriced seat offset..I hopes this finally fixes it. My ass is hanging off the bacl of the seat becuse thats where it wants to be. Making the stem longer is not the best solution.

Can't you just get an XL or L bike instead?
>>
>>263508
Maybe I should ride the M/L size bike but the medium already feels quite big enough for me. I'm 5'8".
>>
>>263515
If you are falling off the saddle then its small. Either the reach is too short or the seattube angle too low
>>
Going to a lift park for the first time. I've done all my riding in florida and am familiar with up to black trails here.
Besides a full face helmet, is there anything I should be picking up protection wise or gear wise? Anything I should keep in mind?

I wear a bunch of pads
>chest/back protector
>knee pad
>knee brace
>elbows
>wrists
>full face
but I'm a puss I guess and I want to be safe.

Keep in mind
>pre-ride - look at everything at a chill pace
>re-ride - figure out speeds and stuff
>freeride - actually hit shit

On a topic totally different from downhill, I got new tires on my single speed (but actually I want to take this thing to the bike park on Wednesduro)

I was just going to bring my stumpy evo, would it be worthwhile to bring my dirt jumper along?
>>
I dirt bike a lot and have wanted to get an mtb but most of the good entry level options seem like they're 5k+. Bums me out, man. I did build one yesrs ago, but didn't really know what I was doing vis a vis parts selection so I ended up with a fine bike (that was terrible for anything I'd want to use it for) and lots of easted money
>>
>>264191
you won't want the dj for the mountain but a lot of parks have pump tracks or dirt jumps separate from lift access trails.

>>264224
>most of the good entry level options seem like they're 5k+
not really. mtb has cooled off since covid and I know last year bike shops had too much inventory. It's mid-season now so not the best time to find deals, but prices shouldn't be that bad.
Take a look at the used market, it will be even better.

>I got new tires on my single speed
Went on my first ride with these and jesus. 2.35" on a hardtail absolutely beat the shit out of me. Every root rattled my bones. I was fast but I miss 2.5".
>>
>>264227
Fair. I haven't checked prices in a few years so my info is probably out of date. I'll try marketplace or craigslist again to see what stuff goes for now

Just got my first (non motor-) bike in probably 25 years, a used 2018 Salsa Timberjack NX1 27.5". Came with an aftermarket Ascend dropper with a Brooks C17 on it. Last MTB I had was a full rigid late 90s Gary Fisher with gripshift and shitty gearing, pretty amazing how far things have come even on this 8 year old bike.

I think I'm gonna want to do pedals, grips, and especially higher bars pretty soon, people complained about the bar height in old reviews I watched to so I know it's not just me that feels too hunched on it.

I've just been riding around some baby trails and gravel near my house, but I live in an area with a metric fuckton of MTB shit and I'm looking forward to getting out on real trails once I get my fat 40 year old ass into adequate shape to be worth hauling my bike out to them.

I did pedals, grips, and higher bars sooner than I thought I would. Went to the local consignment shop and found a set of 30mm rise Cannondale takeoffs, Chromag grips, and some Raceface pedals, plus a bottle cage and bottle. About $80 all in, not bad, and the bars are night and day, bike feels so much more controllable and comfortable now. The used grips were blue so I matched with the pedals and bottle and I can't decide if it was the right call though.
