Currently shopping for a dirt bike and have around 6k saved, 5'10 165 pounds, live in Arizona so I can find plenty of trails. Only riding experience I have is learning on a KX100 used for enduro and general trail fuckery and bought a crf250r before it blew up. Should have replaced the oil control rings as my buddy told me but live and learn. Both bikes are across the country so those are off the table.I can also fabricate custom parts such as racks, bash plates, crash guards so if any mods need to be made then so be it.I have learned clutch control and can hit small jumps but haven't learned to pop wheelies, whips, or any crazy shit. I can manage a 250 just fine but I am rusty as I haven't ridden in almost 2 years. I will mainly do trail riding with some occasional high speed riding. Here are my options:>Buddy who lives in SoCal 5 hours away is selling a 2018 FX350 with low engine hours for $5k since he can't ride anymore after a crash. My main concern is the rebuild costs and intervals.>Go on facebook marketplace and find a 250 in good shape with some money left over for mods, repairs and tools>buy a new klx230r from a dealership but risk getting raped with taxes and fees tacked onWhat do you guys think?

>>262624Would not recommend kawasucky if you can afford to otherwise. They aren't bad per se, but they're cheap and it shows. What kind of trails are around you? I know arizona has mostly wide open stuff but parts can be lots of tight rocky areas, sparse forests etc. what would work best for you depends a lot on the trails you plan on riding. FX350, for instance, is probably an excellent choice unless you're doing really tight, slow single track>>262698/o/ doesn't know dirt bikes. /dbt/ pretends to know dirt bikes sometimes but few there actually ride them
>>262624First you need to figure out what you really want to do - trails, mx, or both. I would buy an inexpesnive two stroke like a 125 from an older guy who took care of it, can tell you everything about it, has aftermarket parts and is about your weight (so you do not have to immediately respring the suspension). Having a proper suspension set up for your weight and the type of riding you do is most important. Its amazing what you can do a bike you like and are comfortable with. Practice, practic, practice riding, set up little courses and practice standing up through corners, whoops breaking, accelerating. No need to push hard, just get the feel and slolwy work your way up and have fun. If you are riding trails in the desert its important to get familiar with the trails, ruts, rocks, roots, drop offs, so you do not hit the unexpected at speed. When I started riding desert we met a guy at the staging are and he ripped passed us. Turns out he rode the same large loops every weekend (long large loops with hill climbs, sand washes, flats, everything so it was a great variety), but because he knew the area so well he knew when he could go fast and when to really slow down - there were some dangerous obsticles that you could not see until you were righ on them, so go slow to learn the terrain. I suggest a two stoke because it is so muche easier to do a piston and rings for a quick 'top end' where as a 4stroke has all the valves and shims and piston and rings. Here is a great vid of a desert race, guy with camera is riding 2storke, racing against various 4 strokes. Great HD footage. He pulls the lead until a new challenger appears at 2:50. These guys ride the area and already know the terrain. YOu would be crazy to pull these speed never having ridden there before.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nKRdCes9F0
>>262624>crf250r before it blew upDefine 'blew up'. can it be fixed for a lot less than buying another new/used bike? you can guy a lot of engine parts for $2k (cases, transmission, piston, crank, bearings). If you already set the bike for you and you like it just fix it even if you have to buy a used engine that you need to fix. I am still riding my 06 CRF450R which I bought brand new, its still faster than I am, still pulls hard, and since Iost a lot of fat (like 40 pounds) the power/wieght ratio is increased.... :)
>>264228>/o/ doesn't know dirt bikes.those guys are fags and their shit is all retarded. Join us here to talk dirt bikes>>261937I used to race desert and motocross and I had 2 stroke (Service Honda CR500AF) and a number of 4 strokes. All Hondas. I know a bit about the showa forks and suspension set up.
