How goes the training bros? Im workshopping a crescent kick -> sideswing combo. Just learned how to do a roundhouse with my front foot and it is incredibly awkward. I also keep dropping my arms or raising them too high like a muay thai fighter when sparring. Im thinking of trying resistance training in the water now that it is summertime. Any tips for that?Remember you must never use it unless you know how to incapacitate without evidence.
>>263630I tried watching some Karate matches from a bunch of different years and still don't fully understand the rules.Seems like it's fencing where all you have to do is tag the opponent with a clean strike regardless of how hard it hitsWas also surprised to see in a match where a fighter got fouled for "too much contact" which seemed strange to me since iirc Karate had grabs
>>263635It wasnt designed for tournaments so thats probably why the rules are fucky. Its about control of the body and ending a conflict as quick as you possibly can, and most people dont want to legitimately hurt other practicioners of the art. If its a thing of too much contact thats probably like in boxing when they hug eachother and the ref breaks it up. It doesnt film well, but from what ive seen in my own real life experiences it is positive in a shitton of ways.
>>263635As far as points karate goes, there's 2 main orgs with different rulesets: JKA and WKF. Both are gay, but the WKF rules are gayer. WKF was the ruleset used in the Olympics, where the guy who got knocked the fuck out out was the one who won gold. JKA isn't full contact, but seems to allow incidental knockdowns at least.
>>263683This is just bare knuckle boxing with kicks to worry about.. why aren't they wearing gum shields Idiots
>>263683Is that the dude from kuro obi?
The only kumite rules worth anything are Kyokushin rules.
There’s no full contact karate near me so I’m going to kickboxing classes at an MMA gym. Feels bad bros. At least the kickboxing coach fought professionally.
I guess the other karategen must have died...Anyway, does anyone know about "Mumonkai Karatedo?" It looks like someone reinvented Kudo from first principles. https://youtu.be/Hs72DkOCXuc?si=WaO9YJ2TJBR89H_g
>>264565They have this weird signature stance/kamae-dachi, it's kinda like some kind of sword and shield style stance
>>263637>and most people dont want to legitimately hurt other practicioners of the artwhat? that's so weird for a combat sportlike, you don't see Muay Thai fighters worrying about things like thisalso from what I've watched there doesn't seem to be any mouth guards despite head strikes being legal so like idk, is there any reason they're not using them?
Are you part of JKA? Whats your experience like with it? My dojo does not do a lot of kumite, though I am not part of the brown+black belt class. From what I have seen they do more sparring there
>>264594>what? that's so weird for a combat sportIt's pretty common and why rules exist. You don't want to break your fighting buddies or they can't fight with you anymore. You'll see it sometimes in MMA matches where the ref is slow to call a match and the guy winning is asking for permission to stop beating a defenseless man he doesn't want to permanently injure. It's one of the core tenants of judo and generally just a good utilitarian policy and natural non-psychopath mentality.
>>264594>that's so weird for a combat sportYou can't win without there being someone who loses. Yes we train to beat the brakes off each other (well I do at my Kyokushin class), but ultimately we all want to become stronger.
Anyone have any of these DVDs? or know where I can download them?
Never done karate before, but there's a Meibukan dojo near me (whatever that means). What am I in for?
>>265055It’s a Goju Ryu branch. It’s legit.
>>265097Have any more details off the top of your head? What I've found online makes me think they're a bit off the beaten path.
>>265101If it’s the Meibukan I’m familiar with then it’s traditional Okinawan style Goju Ryu. I did a two week trial at one of their dojos and it was a good experience. There was a huge focus on self defense applicable techniques and a nearly nonexistent focus on competition. The school near me flies out to a huge knockdown competition halfway across the country once a year but that’s it. I’d recommend it if you want the traditional karate experience. They still do katas but they’re less kata heavy than something like Shito Ryu. I didn’t continue going after the trial because I’m interested in full contact competition and sparring and the school didn’t do kumite that often. Most schools in the organization will do kumite more than the one I tried.
>>265105Very good to know, thanks! It seems it's an org related to the first north american black belt that's split off? Seems interesting if nothing else.
>>264893>know where I can download them?hahahahahahhabe thankfull youtube still have LOTS of videos from the kyokushin craze the late 80s until the normalization of early 00s.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbvXzJ2j3Kc
>>265369already have that one, but there's a few clips from the IKO stuff I posted on youtube, so I was hoping someone had the full dvds, I actually ordered some off Japanese Ebay so I might rip them myself.
Cant get over over my mental block. I reached 8th kyu and kind of just stopped going. The longer i stay away the more i fear shame in going back. What keeps you going to the dojo week over week?
>>265955It's fun, I like everyone there, and people actually respect my commitment. I've spent most of my professional life having people talk down to me because they disrespect me, so having the new guys ask me for advice, help, and inspiration pushes me to improve myself so that I can continue to foster their growth. And I like hitting people.
