What I have learnt so far

But ultimately kickboxing is the quickest way to fight on the street. All fights start in kickboxing range and shooting in to grapple is less appealing on concrete

The reason legit MMA orgs have rules is because no real athlete will compete in something where he might be horribly maimed. People are getting permanent brain damage from UFC careers and taking way more damage for very little money, something being sanctioned doesn't matter, you are an adult, you want to fight on pavement then fight on pavement. It actually looks safer on KOTs because they seem to be more cautious in how they fight because of the environment and rule set.

I really don't like UFC. I don't think they pay the fighters anywhere near what they should get paid, the weight cut system encourages CTE because they're dehydrated then get knocked in the head, and there's a lot of other issues but CTE and pay are the two big ones. I know several people who have been in UFC/Bellator and none of them are "rich" from it despite giving their best years to the sport, being on TV, being recognized etc but they sure as hell made UFC a lot of money.

the wrestler had good takedowns but not great control, a bjj guy would have kept him on the ground and submitted him, lots of wasted energy having to take this guy down 3-4 times until the fight stops.

What I do find interesting about KOTS is that it to a certain extent redeems all the kung fu "2 deadly for da ring" talk everybody poopooed for years. Things like eye gouges are in fact completely devasting. There's several examples (not only the one from the OP) where arguably an inferior fighter wins because he pulls off an eye gouge or headbutt. Things like that do dramatically change the game.
Obviously you still need a decent base in the fundamentals, but still.

Yuki Nakai famously was blinded in one eye by Gerard Gordeau, and that was during an MMA bout where eye pokes were illegal. It can happen, but it's not a guarantee.

I have trouble imagining why anyone would sign up for this. The money isn't great and the fame is also relatively small. I think you just have to love violence and want that extreme thrill of true no holds barred, brutal hand to hand combat. Not ashamed to admit that isn't me.

Kudos to those guys, I would not participate in that because I am a pussy/don't want to be maimed for nothing. To me, the point of MAs I do (boxing, wrestling) is that they are cardio+physical skills+self defence. KOTS doesn't really improve on any of those vs MMA, and adds a ton of physical risk. Which is why imo it's retarded.

The real risks in KOT are:

The things I like are that it's bare knuckle, no jacket and you can headbutt dudes. But kudo already does almost that. And kudo comps look quite similar to this, actually, just less grrrr i am hardcore drama and also takedowns there are easier due to the jacket.

I don't know if eye gouging is even useful in self-defence anyway since you'd want to kd/ko the opponent asap, not sit on him and poke his eye out, that just raises the stakes. If you're a manlet about to be raped, then maybe.

KOTG dudes just shrug off being thrown on pavement so it's not a reliable fight ender compared to striking. Going to the ground is bad because it exposes you to eye gouges, aids bites, stabbing, soccer kicks. Time spent on learning submissions or takedowns is better spent perfecting striking, takedown defence and getting out. There was that one fight where the guy judo'd the other guy and choked him out all in the span of 10 seconds but it's an exception.

It turns out this can only happen if your opponent is an extremely physically awkward fuck, like drunk or high or decrepit, or if you nigh-suicidally guide their head down into the ground and risk knocking yourself out ala Kevin Randleman vs Fedor. Concrete floors make the latter option unappealing.

KOTS once again dispelling martial arts rumors. Throws on concrete are rarely a fight ender. That said, ending a throw in a dominant position is very important if your opponent can eye gouge you. So 1 point for Judo and kesa gatame.
