hey. im in southern cali, and there's a couple of options for grappling styles near me:- training with the local cc wrestling team off-season in a club (freestyle wrestling, non-intramural; literally just a club with the wrestling team)- kosen judo school (judo + more newaza??)- bjj school (10th planet or the standard bjj that comes in mma gyms)im a pretty athletic guy currently on the local college's track team + consistent s&c whenever classes arent trying to rape me. im pretty short for my age (5'7" barely) with a stocky build, so if any of these arts stand out as a must for some retard like me, i'd like to try them.
>>265711You're pretty spoiled for options. You should really try all of them (at least for a trial class or two) to see what you like best. Personally I'd rank them bjj < kosen judo < wrestling>bjjGreat martial art, but there are schools everywhere. The option is always going to be there regardless of the time/year.>kosen judoIt's commonly thought to be a newaza-focused judo style, but that's a misconception. It's a specific ruleset that has more groundwork involved due to the meta of the format, rather than them specializing in it. If they're genuinely doing kosen, it's worth pursuing because it's extremely rare outside of Japan. However, there are judo hipsters who do slightly more newaza than usual and co-opt the kosen name for marketing. If it's the latter case, it's not as appealing.>wrestlingSince you're still in school, you should take advantage of it while you can. Options for wrestling are very limited for non-collegiate adults.
I will train you, however you need to bring at least 2 friends
>>265711Wrestling and it’s not even close. It will teach you aggression, dominance, explosiveness and put you in the best condition of your life. There is no fit like wresting fit.
>>265711Depends what do you want to learn. I would do bjj only after wrestling or judo unless you're sure that the gym you choose will teach takedowns well.
>>265715Your reasoning for wrestling is why I'd bump it to the top of the list. I do bjj but I'm also at one of the two or three schools out of 20+ in the city that has an in house wrestling coach. Almost everywhere is gonna have a couple former wrestlers you can work with but I find even being able to pick the brain of someone that did it at such a high level is invaluable
