So I’ve always had this question: if a fighter in, a physical sport like karate or MMA or something like that would purposely hurt their opponents during a fight or like a sparring match, and if so, how and why would you do it, and would you try to be discrete about it or just do it? Or maybe you just did it once for a specific reason or targeted someone. Whatever the case may be, I’d love to hear your takes on this if y’all have done it or something similar.

During light sparring at my full contact karate dojo this semi new (maybe 4 months of training) guy kept trying to side kick my head off, over and over again. And then he went to spar with some other new people and he kept hitting them far too hard for a light spar, so when he came back to me I chose to only target the leg he was side kicking with. Every time he raised it to chamber for the side kick I would kick the back of the raised thigh as hard as possible, I kept doing it and sure enough he got a dead leg. Then as he tried to side kick again, he raised his leg and it gave out, he put it down too fast and somehow broke a bone in his foot with the way he landed. I felt bad because this was about 30 minutes into a two hour session but the instructor, myself, and many others kept asking him to go lighter, especially on the newer people in the dojo, yet he wouldn't so really he deserved it.

I would always try to hurt everyone at a tournament. I don't know you so you can catch the fade.
