Hey fellas, so yeah
I’m 32, I’ve been training MMA for almost 3 years, usually 5 days a week, and it’s become a pretty central part of my life. I’m supposed to compete for the first time in November.
A week ago I injured my foot during sparring. It’s the first serious injury I’ve had, and an X-ray showed a small fracture in my 3rd metatarsal. Luckily it seems stable, and the pain is getting better every day. I can walk for 10-15 minutes, but I’m still sidelined for a few weeks.
What makes it especially frustrating is that I feel like I had finally reached a point where I was becoming one of the more competitive and technical guys at my gym. I started out pretty terrible, so seeing that progress over almost 3 years has meant a lot to me I’m not just worried about losing my fitness, but also losing some of that momentum and technique I worked so hard to build.
I’m going to use the downtime to focus on my career in video production, but I’m struggling more mentally with being unable to train than I expected.
For those of you who’ve had to take time off MMA/BJJ/boxing because of an injury, how did you deal with it mentally, and what did you do to maintain your conditioning and skills without making the injury worse?
I can't deny a part of me just says "fuck it just wait another week and train like this" but I’m trying not to turn a few weeks off into a much longer injury because I got impatient.

How did you manage to start MMA at almost 30 and not get injured until 3 years in???

Don't know if it has anything to do but I always had good bones and also at my gym the first thing they taught me was to warm up and stretch for about 30-40 minutes.

Just don’t have them.

injuries and managing injuries is just part of any physical sport. Basketball, tennis, ping pong whatever you get injuries, but sparring combat sports you are going to get injured. Just take the time off to heal properly otherwise it could get worse and require surgery or heal incorrectly and cause long term problems (ask me how I know). You are just doing it for sport/fun not multi million dollar bouts, so just take time off.

OP, don't listen to these faggots. They've never gotten /fit/ and don't know shit about rehab. Especially don't listen to the fucker who said
>You are just doing it for sport/fun not multi million dollar bouts, so just take time off.
Because you can tell they've never tried hard in their life. If they did, they'd know like you do how much an injury fucking sucks, and how not being able to do the thing that drives you daily, that motivates you to eat healthy, show up, and train, can lead you down a mental health spiral.

First thing you have to do is know that you are going to be okay. This is not the end of your career. Far from it. It was unfortunate. But you will heal, and be back in the ring. This is a setback, not a career-ender.

Second thing you have to do - Focus on healing and rehabilitation. Get advice from your doctor, physical therapist, coach on when it's safe to start loading the foot daily again. Usually fractures can take 5-6 weeks to fully heal, and loading before that can cause complications later down the line.

Then - Do research on other people who have had similar injuries and look at their rehab/recovery plans. See what worked best. Once 5-6 weeks have passed (or however long your doc/PT/Coach said, and trust them in that order) and you can load the foot, look at injury prevention.

This means - Study what got you injured. What factors were at play? Training too many days on? Too high intensity? Poor sleep/diet that week? Over training? Or just plain bad luck? Usually it's a number of things, but focus on the things that can be controlled so it doesn't ever happen again.

The next few weeks will be a bit tougher, but they will go and you will be back in the ring. Don't let faggots like >>267797 make you think you're stupid for giving a shit. That's why he's never gonna make it, and you already have.

ooohhhhh dont listen to these guuuyyys they are wimps. Not me like a total faaaaggggg. I consider myself a real stud, a cucks cuck so focus on healing and thinking positive and get some candles that smell nice. Be sure to smell your own farts when you do yooooga in the candle light. I play world of warcraft so I know about injuries.

Eh, I know it's not something I will make a living off, I don't mind some rest but primarily what is driving me crazy is the fact that most likely I will need to be sidelined for 2 months.

Watch film and do what training you safely can. Remind yourself that recovery is an essential part of training. >>267800 is right, use it as a learning experience and don't let it be a significant setback.

I dislocated partially my collarbone doing judo, it took around 1 month to be able to lift the arm normally again.
It sucks but don't rush it, let it heal and do what the doctor tells you, maybe try to move the leg a little bit without loading your foot when you get better and lift weights for the upper body but no crazy loads that would need leg drive to be pushed.
