Any general tips for comp? Going to my first out of gym comp and I want to have a good time and make some friends. But I also don't want to go 0-5 (which I probably will ngl)
>>
You're not going to make friends, People aren't there to socialize

People will be sitting with their own groups they traveled with, and stretching with headphones on
Best case scenario someone offers you candy or tries to mooch some of yours when you're packing up at the end of the day and you never see them again
>>
Why did you not directly reply?
>>
Because there's nobody else in the room with us and there's no cross talk happening
>>
>>270544
You can absolutely become friendly with people if you see them at every local but he's right you're probably not going to make friends. Bring snacks if you're doing gi and no gi because they're almost all run like shit and youre gonna be there 4-6 hours for 20 minutes of rolling. If you've ever played a sport before you don't have to worry nearly as much about an "adrenaline dump" as the average person online will tell you, bjj is largely practiced by people with zero athletic background that make mountains out of molehills. Warm up the same way you always would, if that's any sort of grip fighting or flow rolling make sure you have someone you know and trust there the day of, if they aren't going to be there find the people that will and start communicating with them now. Don't try anything new on the mats unless you genuinely don't care about the results. Unless you're months out and capable of losing weight slowly don't bother cutting weight for a 4$ plastic medal. Go in comfortable and use it as a way to find naturally occuring holes in your game. At white belt with maybe a year of experience be prepared to find out there are a lot more than you expected

but yup, will remember to bring snacks to probably share with people. I guess gum would be kinda neat to slide into people's DMs. I gotta work on my game a lot more though, have too little months experience but I think my top positions are okay so I'll focus more on finishing from there. Any resources to take a look at?

In high school one of my folkstyle/scholastic wrestling teammates suddenly spazzed out in a match, picked the other guy up over his head, and yeeted him from about the center of the mat to the edge of the mat (very much an illegal technique). As he was storming off the mat back towards our team coach was pissed off and walked to confront him, but when he threw his headgear down and yelled, "He shoved his FINGER in my ASSHOLE!" coach immediately calmed down, consoled our guy, and handled the situation with the refs and other coach. The booty bandit left on a stretcher and there were no legal or disciplinary consequences for our guy.

Any tips for a newbie? Half a year in and I'm starting to get the hang of things. How are you supplementing knowledge outside the gym though? I'm running into a lot of situations where I learn things, drill them, understand them, a day later I completely forget all the techniques, ask for a refresher, completely forget again. Rinse and repeat. I know it's frustrating a bit of my instructors but I do want to start progressing a little out of the gym. I'm starting to feel my rolls have been very "samey" and while I get that's a "good thing" since I'm developing my game. It's starting to be really fucking predictable to my training partners.
>>
>>270608
>I learn things, drill them, understand them, a day later I completely forget all the techniques, ask for a refresher, completely forget again
Take notes after class and review them before class.
>>
>>270609
I've tried writing notes before but it never sticks. I either write too vague where I have no idea what the fuck the position is or I end up writing the wrong thing and I'm like what this makes no sense.
Maybe I should start looking shit up after class and putting videos on a notion notebook or something. Is a training dummy worth it to drill positions or is that going to get into bad habits?
>>
>>270610
>I've tried writing notes before but it never sticks. I either write too vague where I have no idea what the fuck the position is or I end up writing the wrong thing and I'm like what this makes no sense.
It's a skill that you'll need to develop, not some permanent incurable defect. Once I'm a little less busy I plan to take the time to learn to draw to improve my notetaking; currently, drawing is not a skill I have, but it's one I'm sure I can develop.
>Maybe I should start looking shit up after class and putting videos on a notion notebook or something.
Tying your notes in with other resources would be an excellent habit.
>Is a training dummy worth it to drill positions or is that going to get into bad habits?
Whatever gets you engaging with solo training. Closing your eyes and imagining an opponent while going through the motions without a dummy helps, too. As long as you're going to class and checking your technique against a real person under a coach's eye regularly you shouldn't develop any real bad habits.
>>
>>270611
Thanks anon! Lastly just curious, do you have any good templates to use?

Do they? The only person I've seen give someone shit for chewing gum on the mats is my coach and I always thought that's because he's the one paying the cleaner

Is erik paulson legit? I have a gym 10min from home and the instructor got his black belt from him.
>>
>>270663
He's a great case of how being a tough guy with a modest amount of ability made you an absolute legend 30+ years ago
But there's not actually anything particularly impressive about him, And I'm skeptical of his judgment because he recently released an instructional all about knee wrestling which is not a real position in any sport

In fact if you ever walk into a grappling gym and the guys are starting on the knees you need to do a 360 back break fall and shrimp out the door, it's the red flag to end them all
>>
>>270664
In the other gym i went to for 1 year there was a brazilian instructor, infinite warm up, shrimp up and down the mat, drill armbar 10 times each no resistance AND he made us wear the belt even when doing nogi (this made me mad). So i'm thinking maybe this other gym will be better.

Its referring to the person designing the practice
It's easy to accidentally turn live practice into pointless grab ass if you don't grasp exactly what you're trying to accomplish

All the thinking needs to be done by the coach so the athlete can just focus on improving
If as a coach you are putting your athletes in a position where they need to start taking notes and watching instructionals or what have you you've fundamentally failed at your job

They should be able to just show up to practice be given something to do and walk out having improved
>>
>>270690
>It's easy to accidentally turn live practice into pointless grab ass if you don't grasp exactly what you're trying to accomplish
Agreed.
>All the thinking needs to be done by the coach so the athlete can just focus on improving
Disagree, unless, possibly, you're talking about an elite-level athlete with a full team of personal coaches doing every little thing for him all day long. For any other athlete they'll need to do some amount of homework outside of coach-supervised training time for maximum progress.
>If as a coach you are putting your athletes in a position where they need to start taking notes and watching instructionals or what have you you've fundamentally failed at your job
There's a difference between needing those things and benefiting from supplementing with those things.
>They should be able to just show up to practice be given something to do and walk out having improved
Agreed.

fuck all this talk about eco vs drilling etc whatever. i find that what matters much more is the training intensity. i go to bjj the ppl complain that im going too hard, well their flow jiujitsu shit is never going to work in a real situation like a competition vs when i go to wrestle at the local wrestling club theyre not trying to flow roll theyre trying to win exchanges. and noone complains about you using too much strength lol. and im not talking about just using ur a-game and winning exchanges rather the intensity whether youre trying out new shit or doing your a-game. whereas if u do this in bjj youll get a bunch of pussies faking an injury or going like "hey hey thats too rough" or theyll roll with u once then next time u wanna roll with them theyll be like no thanks. belt culture is a problem here too, someone more athletic but with a lower belt will win you in a round then the upper belt will cope with that the guy was spazzing out or that he needs to learn to relax or whatever. which brings me to my other point, telling beginners to "relax", yea in the beginning its maybe a good advice before people learn proper coordination but youll find some people adopt this sort of relaxed flowy style even when theres no reason anymore. the most cope inducing thing is an athletic grappler with a lower belt than you who wins you by "spazzing too much" (it was rly because you were a pussy and giving up position)

5 months is long enough to understand the flow but not really long enough to have a foundation that you can build upon in every direction.

If you’re in an environment where you’re treading water or not progressing, pick one submission, use it for about month training 3-4 times a week.

The goal is to recognize every pathway in and out of that submission.

Use that to build your game out, this way when you’re going forward, you have a rock solid foundation for one situation and a bunch of ways to get to that situation.

Your coaches might not like this, your teammates might get tired of it, but you will not feel as lost when you come back to the gym because you’ll have a plan. Good luck on your journey
>>
>>271413

srs what the fuck is so hard about implementing more livework into gym. my homegym is a growing place we got like 3 locations buncha people coming and were STILL doing dead drilling (atleast we have themes so its not pure TOTD) with a couple lackluster positional sparring rounds and then an open mat. im growing so tired of this and basically all the experienced guys either train elsewhere, just come to open mats or have their own little circles. wtf is so hard about just implementing more livework instead of doing useless drilling that only helps maybe the whitest of whitebelts and even for them its nearly useless because fucking noone learns effectively with the do A -> then B -> then C method of teaching. fuck im so tired im honestly just gonna shift into doing open mats if this shit doesnt change. seems like such a simple solution yet most gyms wont implement it. is it just that most people are npc's and content with wasting their training time or what

I don't know how to deal with this. Obviously I don't want to hurt my training partners, but what's the counter to when they stick their ass in your face like this?
>>
>>271651
can't you do like a modified sprawl where you drop to your knees? that's what I usually do, they no longer have the leverage to tripod sweep but huh you are kinda right I never really just through of fuck it and drop your hips. probably not legal in comp but i'll go ask in tonight's class.

Any tips on rolling with spazzy white belts? I train with one once in a while and it's frustrating. Not for him but for me. I'll be completely stuck because he's constantly gas gas gas and by the time he gets tuckered out is when the 5 minutes is up and I'm just like fuckkkk because mentally I know I lost in points. He has a good offense though (like I'm struggling to escape if I'm a bad spot, but he can't really finish since he's forcing bad subs) but my escapes are shit because he'll spaz out and really keep me locked in. Good for me while rolling with him because I get to practice defense but as I said I'm always thinking in competition setting and I would've lost easily from points.

Genuinely asking do you guys think your grappling skill can take on a "genuine nutter" like this who does 5000 push ups a day and handstand push ups and is known to bend steel prison bars and 10 prison guards have to take him on at once?
>>
>>271881
Despite the marketing hype and lies jijitsu is not some magical superpower that rewrites physics for the user
It's just a strategic path forward to maximize your odds, You still need a robust vessel to execute

Whenever people are asking me what they can do to get better at junitsu I say have you been hitting the weights and running sprints? And the answer is almost always no and I can look at them and say I knew that already

Don't bring a canoe to a naval battle and then be confused that you're getting overwhelmed by firepower
>>
>>271902
Sooo... Do you think you can take him ?
>>
>>271919
i would pull slx and sleem his knee
>>
>>271923
I mean I know beating up Irish travellers, prison guards and other prisoners doesn't mean you're some high level MMA fighter but this guy is known as one of the hardest "nutters" alive who's fitness regime and reputation is insane. I wonder how the average black belt would do against him In a no holds barred MMA fight on concrete. I bet he wouldn't tap to neck cranks and he would fight through broken arms etc

Would love to see that.
>>
>>271926
Will he agree to keeping it clean or is he going to bite and twist my dick?
>>
>>271934
He isn't keeping it clean he's doing anything he can to win biting eye gouging nut grabbing... anything
>>
>>271926
A bjj black belt typically has the standup skills of a judo blue belt at best and pulling a flying triangle on concrete has a good chance of smashing your shoulder even if the guy doesn't decide to slam you into it. Ditto for pulling guard, good luck rolling and sliding on the floor even if the guy isn't in the process of caving your face in from the top.

An actual standup grappler has a decent chance to take him on depending on size and physical conditioning so long as he doesn't eat a hook to the face while closing in. They'd probably be able to address dirty fighting a bit better than striking guys too, if they don't get instantly disabled by getting their achiles bitten off during an armbar or something.
>>
>>271926
do you really mean it?
>>
toenail finally completely ripped off but online it says I'm okay to keep rolling but it's sensitive as FUCK. How do I protect it while rolling? grappling socks? wrap with a bandaid + tape? i used tape with the broken nail and that shit was so painful taking out when it was time for showers.

I've been startin bjj for 4weeks now, I now have a general understanding of positions and logic behind them, but my biggest struggle is my cardio. people say I'm not relax but how can I ? how do you stay relaxed and chill while having a guy trying to break my shit ? I dont wanna be the spazzy white belt but my lack of technique seems to automatically mean i'll muscle everything thus gassing myself out??? how to get out of this cycle beside binge watching techniques on yt ?
>>
>>271995
I've been training around a year
When you spar you're not in danger all the time. Realise when you are in danger and what they're trying to do. This will come with experience

For example if you are in someone's closed guard. I see beginners then death grip the arms of the guy underneath and exert a lot of energy to wrestle the guys upper body for what? because they havent learnt to play the jiu jitsu game yet. What they should be doing is grabbing one arm with both their arms and then you have a clear mechanical advantage you don't need to struggle as much. And then you work to stand up from there. This is all of jiu-jitsu

Also it's not a fight to the death if you get caught in ANYTHING uncomfortable that is hurting or you don't know what you are doing especially neck/leg stuff then just tap and tap quickly. I even tap to arm triangles before they squeeze because I know it's done. If you are with a higher belt ask them to explain how to get out of one technique/pin they got you with

Is sitting down to attempt a tripod sweep inherently more risky and less effective than traditional takedowns?
>>
>>272173
getting on your back aka pulling guard you at least remove one variable. takedown you have no idea where you'll end up.
>>
>>272169
Not a simple scarfhold, but a soulstealer scarfhold. If applied well people freak the fuck out. Even higher belts react badly to that move, new people never come back if you do that to them. Its not a choke per se, more like a drown? By compressing the chest people lose the ability to breathe little by little, every time they exhale they cant get that breath back, so they drown. People have wanted to throw hands after tapping to that. So like neck crsnks i just save them for spazzy assholes.

Tapping to pressure is fine. It shows the power of jiu jitsu

I've tapped to a body triangle where I almost puked and a mount where my arm was trapped and I couldn't breathe. When I get my first pressure tap it'll be a good day

Neck cranks though I don't do although all guillotines are pretty much cranks
>>
I got sweeped in multiple locals in a row. I'm feeling so fucking disappointed in myself. A lot of the time that happens is I play defensively and end up on the bottom and take on a lot of sub attempts. Then when I try sweeping or getting out I have the last minute or two where it feels like I can really show what I'm made of but I lose by points or I can't get out. Only got three weeks until my next comp.

>1. Standup
I always have a tendency to just sit down when taking the back doesn't work. I never really try any frontal takedowns since it feels way too risky for me. I'd rather try to play on the ground than just play grip fighting. I'm just trying to see what else I can learn so even if I do pull guard, what to get into immediately so I'm not playing "oh fuck he's on me".
>2. Sweeps / Back escapes / Mount escapes.
I keep failing my sweeps or escapes so I end up getting remounted and that's more points out. I think it's just the mentality of not really committing but fuck something I feel like escaping mount is less miserable than smashed half. It takes me WAY too fucking long to reverse the situation though, once I go for it my time is done.
>3. Submission Defense
I'd like to think this is okay in my end, I've been in some really bad scenarios but I was able to save myself. I haven't really lost to a sub yet and it's probably the one thing I'm proud of.
>4. Attacks
I know everyone says to not focus on this, but there's a lot of times I'm losing pressure on the top and getting flinged off or can't finish a sub. I'm really trying to focus on Mount -> Arm Bar or Mount -> Gift Wrap -> RNC as my finisher. My transition to the arm bar is so trash though, I need a better resource for it.
Any other tips to improve? I don't want to keep losing comps but fuck the way I'm training, I just feel like I hit a fucking wall. I feel like I just don't have the explosiveness to do well.
>>
>>272251
I'm just a filthy white belt but have you tried sacrifice throws like collar drag they're easy to do + high percentage and will at least create a scramble or your can try an ankle pick off of it
>>
Why weren't these guys spiked on their necks and paralyzed like that other guy
>>
>>272255
I think my problem is my guard game is absolute trash. I'd rather go half or literally even anything else. I waste so much energy in there without much reserve. It's probably one thing I'm really going to focus on for the two weeks.

I'm re-watching a lot of my matches and I think my main problem is I have a tendency to keep them hold on top of me just because it's easier to keep them immobile rather than risk there arms or weight being free. I think in my next few roles I'm going to focus on "no be there" by just trying to squeeze and fore myself out instead of holding and waiting.
>>
>>272258
>my guard game is absolute trash.
>guard is absolutely trash

The only function guard has is to enter leglocks, it's not a legitimate attacking position at the high level outside of that one specific utility
You should always be trying to wrestle for top position
>>
>>272262
Noted. I tried the games where you do submissions from guard but I can't get a good grip at all. Feels like my best opportunity is getting an arm triangle grip and then using that to transition. I think I'm going to start playing more "aggressive" during my rolls though. Keeping hold of a fucker and playing defense sucks so much fucking ass....

Damn I just realized I made a lot of typos when I wrote that earlier. I must've been really tired lmao.
>>
>>272263
If you bottom leg isn't physically being stapled or turked you can just stand up any time you want to

Never play guard by choice, if someone wants you down it's their responsibility to keep you there. You wouldn't stand in front of someone and let them punch you. You'd move

So do the body check, if you are down and you have the ability to put weight on your bottom leg and stand up just do it
>>
A few days after my comp I just realized the biggest reason I'm disappointed in myself is because I barely showed anything. It's like MMA getting knocked out in the first punch. I feel embarrassed as fuck and I'm debating on dropping out of my next tourney just until I get more experience. (but my brain is also being "don't be a bitch and just go") but I don't want another disgraceful showing like that again...
>>272264
I'll note that down. I think I end up getting hella pinned in side control so even if I bump or try to use my leg to escape shit doesn't work. Even if I manage to get them into half guard, it's half guard so I'm STILL fucked.
>>
>>272347
>even if I bump or try to use my leg to escape shit doesn't work
Correct, it doesn't work

Why try to go back to guard? You should be trying to leave
>>
>>272365
any resources or seminars?
>>
>>272347
How long have you been training and how many days a week do you train?
>>
>>272365
You can't "just leave" against someone even slightly competent

I'm sure all the judo Olympians and bjj pros would "just escape" to avoid pins if it was so easy
>>
>>272369
With side control it kinda works, because it's not a very good pin to begin with, unless the opponent is a lot bigger and stronger. You can generally create some sort of opening where you'll be able to start turning to turtle and posturing up. Unless you're gift-wrapped or something, then you're kinda screwed
>>
>>272368
6-8 times a week. It's been 4-5 months. I'm a little slow in learning technique though. I think another problem I'm noticing is the intensity for comp vs regular rolls is significant. I'm already in "oh fuck oh fuck can't get injured" mode during comp and I've gotta cut that shit out. Guess it's just experience. Haven't been subbed out yet so that's the only thing I'm happy about but getting pinned until the last 20 seconds makes me feel like a fucking loser. Which I am. I won't stay to be a loser though hopefully...
>>
>>272369
Of course you can. They struggle because they're playing the same bad game with each other instead of redefining the terms

Someone competent will just collapse your frames. The real redpill is "Escaping isn't supposed to be easy"
if youve been pinned and flattened you're basically half buried and you need to work hard to improve your situation

I'm more competent at doing this than anyone else is at stopping me from doing it
