Any general tips for comp? Going to my first out of gym comp and I want to have a good time and make some friends. But I also don't want to go 0-5 (which I probably will ngl)
>>
You're not going to make friends, People aren't there to socialize

People will be sitting with their own groups they traveled with, and stretching with headphones on
Best case scenario someone offers you candy or tries to mooch some of yours when you're packing up at the end of the day and you never see them again
>>
Why did you not directly reply?
>>
Because there's nobody else in the room with us and there's no cross talk happening
>>
>>270544
You can absolutely become friendly with people if you see them at every local but he's right you're probably not going to make friends. Bring snacks if you're doing gi and no gi because they're almost all run like shit and youre gonna be there 4-6 hours for 20 minutes of rolling. If you've ever played a sport before you don't have to worry nearly as much about an "adrenaline dump" as the average person online will tell you, bjj is largely practiced by people with zero athletic background that make mountains out of molehills. Warm up the same way you always would, if that's any sort of grip fighting or flow rolling make sure you have someone you know and trust there the day of, if they aren't going to be there find the people that will and start communicating with them now. Don't try anything new on the mats unless you genuinely don't care about the results. Unless you're months out and capable of losing weight slowly don't bother cutting weight for a 4$ plastic medal. Go in comfortable and use it as a way to find naturally occuring holes in your game. At white belt with maybe a year of experience be prepared to find out there are a lot more than you expected

Oh yeah, I'll definitely make one friend before I leave u fuckers.
but yup, will remember to bring snacks to probably share with people. I guess gum would be kinda neat to slide into people's DMs. I gotta work on my game a lot more though, have too little months experience but I think my top positions are okay so I'll focus more on finishing from there. Any resources to take a look at?

Poor sweet thing
Sour skittles and gummies are what people are after. The 3 food groups are sour, chewy, and fruity
That's your currency at jiujitsu competitions like cigarettes and honey buns are in prison

i mean something to freshen the breathe haha people would get self conscious i guess. I mean it's still early so I'll pack sour skittles and gummies kehehehe.

In high school one of my folkstyle/scholastic wrestling teammates suddenly spazzed out in a match, picked the other guy up over his head, and yeeted him from about the center of the mat to the edge of the mat (very much an illegal technique). As he was storming off the mat back towards our team coach was pissed off and walked to confront him, but when he threw his headgear down and yelled, "He shoved his FINGER in my ASSHOLE!" coach immediately calmed down, consoled our guy, and handled the situation with the refs and other coach. The booty bandit left on a stretcher and there were no legal or disciplinary consequences for our guy.

It was pretty fucked up. I wrestled for 11 years and that's the only time I knew of that happening to someone, despite jokes about it being ever present. It's just he injured that kid as badly as he did.

Any tips for a newbie? Half a year in and I'm starting to get the hang of things. How are you supplementing knowledge outside the gym though? I'm running into a lot of situations where I learn things, drill them, understand them, a day later I completely forget all the techniques, ask for a refresher, completely forget again. Rinse and repeat. I know it's frustrating a bit of my instructors but I do want to start progressing a little out of the gym. I'm starting to feel my rolls have been very "samey" and while I get that's a "good thing" since I'm developing my game. It's starting to be really fucking predictable to my training partners.
>>
>>270608
>I learn things, drill them, understand them, a day later I completely forget all the techniques, ask for a refresher, completely forget again
Take notes after class and review them before class.
>>
>>270609
I've tried writing notes before but it never sticks. I either write too vague where I have no idea what the fuck the position is or I end up writing the wrong thing and I'm like what this makes no sense.
Maybe I should start looking shit up after class and putting videos on a notion notebook or something. Is a training dummy worth it to drill positions or is that going to get into bad habits?
>>
>>270610
>I've tried writing notes before but it never sticks. I either write too vague where I have no idea what the fuck the position is or I end up writing the wrong thing and I'm like what this makes no sense.
It's a skill that you'll need to develop, not some permanent incurable defect. Once I'm a little less busy I plan to take the time to learn to draw to improve my notetaking; currently, drawing is not a skill I have, but it's one I'm sure I can develop.
>Maybe I should start looking shit up after class and putting videos on a notion notebook or something.
Tying your notes in with other resources would be an excellent habit.
>Is a training dummy worth it to drill positions or is that going to get into bad habits?
Whatever gets you engaging with solo training. Closing your eyes and imagining an opponent while going through the motions without a dummy helps, too. As long as you're going to class and checking your technique against a real person under a coach's eye regularly you shouldn't develop any real bad habits.
>>
>>270611
Thanks anon! Lastly just curious, do you have any good templates to use?
>>
>>270608
>I learn things, drill them, understand them, a day later I completely forget all the techniques
See you're gonna go and get me all wound up again

Take a look at the previous thread where it is explained that drilling does not teach you jiujitsu and as a total waste of your time. Grappling is a motor learning process not a cognitive one
>>
>>270613
>Grappling is a motor learning process not a cognitive one
It's very clearly both, at least for people who are not cognitively defective.

If you learned every new technique you came across in a week and could apply it you would be a black belt in a year of showing up to the gym twice a week
Cast off your self doubts about learning slowly
>>
>>270608
>It's starting to be really fucking predictable to my training partners
The ultimate victory is being so good at what you do even though they know it's coming you win anyways
That's how you get your opponents beaten so bad they question their own skills

People who are dehydrated smell like death
One fun trick is some people get offended if you chew gum while rolling
You can totally psyche them out as disrespecting them if gum chewing isn't against the rules
>>
>>270661
>some people get offended if you chew gum while rolling
Do they? The only person I've seen give someone shit for chewing gum on the mats is my coach and I always thought that's because he's the one paying the cleaner
>>
Is erik paulson legit? I have a gym 10min from home and the instructor got his black belt from him.
>>
>>270663
He's a great case of how being a tough guy with a modest amount of ability made you an absolute legend 30+ years ago
But there's not actually anything particularly impressive about him, And I'm skeptical of his judgment because he recently released an instructional all about knee wrestling which is not a real position in any sport

In fact if you ever walk into a grappling gym and the guys are starting on the knees you need to do a 360 back break fall and shrimp out the door, it's the red flag to end them all
>>
>>270664
In the other gym i went to for 1 year there was a brazilian instructor, infinite warm up, shrimp up and down the mat, drill armbar 10 times each no resistance AND he made us wear the belt even when doing nogi (this made me mad). So i'm thinking maybe this other gym will be better.

This framework has been around for decades, I can't help if Brazilians never heard about it in the jungle but its not even up for debate
You and the larger bjj community are trying to dismiss the validity of something that has been known for 40 years and people have PhDs in
>>
>>270672
>the application of the constraints-led approach requires a level of conceptual, theoretical, and practical expertise
kind of sounds like they're arguing that it's both a cognitive and motor process

If Greg Souders posted on 4chan his posts would read exactly like these
>>
>>270683
Its referring to the person designing the practice
It's easy to accidentally turn live practice into pointless grab ass if you don't grasp exactly what you're trying to accomplish

All the thinking needs to be done by the coach so the athlete can just focus on improving
If as a coach you are putting your athletes in a position where they need to start taking notes and watching instructionals or what have you you've fundamentally failed at your job

They should be able to just show up to practice be given something to do and walk out having improved
>>
>>270690
>It's easy to accidentally turn live practice into pointless grab ass if you don't grasp exactly what you're trying to accomplish
Agreed.
>All the thinking needs to be done by the coach so the athlete can just focus on improving
Disagree, unless, possibly, you're talking about an elite-level athlete with a full team of personal coaches doing every little thing for him all day long. For any other athlete they'll need to do some amount of homework outside of coach-supervised training time for maximum progress.
>If as a coach you are putting your athletes in a position where they need to start taking notes and watching instructionals or what have you you've fundamentally failed at your job
There's a difference between needing those things and benefiting from supplementing with those things.
>They should be able to just show up to practice be given something to do and walk out having improved
Agreed.

It's impossible to improve skill outside of physically doing the activity
You can be self directed and make up your own practices if you want but unless you have other bodies resisting there isn't skill being developed

Studying film and what not you can formulate tactics, but not ability

If you're exerting yourself and breathing heavily enough there's a risk you'll either expel it from your mouth and cause a gross problem for your partner or inhale it and cause a scene. If you're not prepared to be breathing that heavily it may imply you're not taking practice seriously.
>>
>>270725
>It's impossible to improve skill outside of physically doing the activity
There have been papers, metastudies, and coach/athlete experiences to the contrary for centuries. You may find pic related particularly relevant to you personally.
>Studying film and what not you can formulate tactics, but not ability
Tactics are an intermediate/advanced grappling skill.
>>
>>270744
>they were being disrespected
>it may imply you're not taking practice seriously.
From a big picture point of view I can admit when I'm wrong. There are lower belts I don't take seriously at all. I can see how that's disrespectful. Never thought of it like that

i very seldom seek out bjj content because even without ai i find a lot of it is needlessly complicated. verbosity for the sake of appearing in depth. turn a 2 or 3 hour instructional into a full days work taking notes and replaying sequences. ive been playing with things from this video every open mat and every class we've worked guard this summer

Ill take a week a few times a year. Always say I'm just gonna stretch and try to go for a walk on the weekend but usually end up doing some dips and pullups over the week. And I don't want to sound condescending but there's a difference between hurt and injured and I'd err on the side of caution if it's your neck
