Thanks. I don't have much of a problem with flashy designs myself, but I can definitely say they’re not my thing. A lot of that has to do with the media I grew up with, things like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, the History channel (Ancient Aliens in particular), and nonfiction books like Eyewitness by DK Publishing. All of these things made me a big fan of history and earthy colors, so that works its way into what I make.

I’m probably not the best person to get advice from because my “workflow” is rather irregular and inefficient, and I don’t know much about making money, but I’ll give it my best go since you asked. Normally I like to start by studying my subject of interest by drawing because it helps me internalize the various contours, proportions, and details, but then I typically model without reference. I don’t do that on purpose most of the time, I just forget that references are something I can use when modeling, but I did make image planes for the first model, and that’s probably why it looks better than the others. Modeling without a reference can make a project take a while to complete, but sometimes taking a while can be a good thing, at least for the design of something. Nora in particular took me a span of 8 months to complete, but a lot of that time was spent not working on the model, then coming back to it and working out the kinks with a fresh eye.
The other part of it is about having well-developed creative muscles. I spent much of my youth playing with legos and doing origami, and both of those things help develop a sense of how to go about the creative process, and also develop the senses for shapes, proportions, and colors that look nice. Lego minifigures and MMORPGs with good character customization also helped develop my senses for character design specifically. Minecraft was also something I spent a lot of time on during my teenage years, and that was really good for architecture, environments, and atmosphere. What you pull inspiration from is also important, like with the media I listed in my previous reply.

The tree of the races in my fantasy setting. The idea with the golems is that they’re not really a “race”, but a loose collection of other living beings that have been altered/corrupted by technology and/or magic. I do have the renders for the pirate character I made. That reminds me of something I think could be useful to you. I stumbled upon a philosophical YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9A7GTGSfrIU) a while back about the archetypes of the puer aeternus (boy eternal) - a boy who was never forced to grow up and has a bright imagination because of it, but typically lacks the ability to actualize his imagination because he refuses to engage with the real world, and the senex (old man) - a man who was forced to grow up too early, and hence had his imagination and spirituality crushed by his sense of practicality and duty. I suffer from the first archetype and have been trying to build myself over the past few years, and I think you may suffer from the second and could benefit from watching that video. These philosophical ideas do play a part in what I create. I’ve always found great joy in creative play, and I hate how sterile and practical the world is today. Everyone is overconcerned about being “right”, or doing things “the right way” that it squeezes the fun out of things. The world was more interesting when people believed in fairies and dragons and stuff like that, and that’s why I love shows like Ancient Aliens even though most of what they say in that show is dumb bullshit.

Kalchas the exoskeleton golem - definitely one of my raunchier designs, but not my worst idea. I had an idea for a character called “Ouroboros” that would turn himself into a wheel by sucking his own penis and attack the player by rolling around. I think a big part of the lack of thoughtfulness is just that it can take a while to write a good response to something, and most people just don’t take their internet conversations very seriously, which makes sense most of the time because some people on the internet have both really poor reading comprehension and an inability to articulate themselves well. Another thing is that on boards like this one and /ic/, people (this usually includes myself) will refrain from attaching their work to their opinions since saying the wrong thing can result in someone obsessing over them and harassing them one-sidedly for an extended period of time, even over fairly inoffensive statements. I don’t normally see that happen on this board a lot, but /ic/ and /vg/agdg/ are particularly bad in that regard.

Thanks for the kind words. Animation is still one of my weak points, and I haven’t even gotten into music and sound design yet. I was planning on going through Richard Williams’ book soon since everyone holds it in high regard, and I’ll likely try my hand at some traditional animation to practice. Right now I’m trying to enhance my anatomy knowledge, and was planning on practicing cartooning some more so that I can model the rest of Jita’s body. This video is an example of some of my other animations in a “game”, which also need a lot of work.

The idea with the Chi Wara and the two races that descended from them is that the Chi Wara come from a foreign planet where most of the female life is in the form of the typical mobile animal, while most of the male life is more “plantlike”, like a sponge or precambrian animal. Most female animals don’t breed with one “plant” in particular, and some animals do also have a male counterpart that is capable of moving.
During human prehistory, some Chi Wara settled on the Earth and taught humans agriculture and how to build civilizations.
Because of the way Chi Wara reproduce, they’re compatible with many different types of semen, including human semen, so some of the Chi Wara integrated into human society and eventually evolved into Amazons due to selective pressures.
The Elves are the descendants of the Chi Wara that decided to isolate themselves from the Earthly races, and ultimately went down a different evolutionary path, keeping some of their Chi Waran features while also adapting to the Earth’s environment. The Elves reproduce almost exclusively using the semen-producing crops they brought to the Earth ages ago since they consider it taboo to do otherwise, and this severely handicaps their population growth since those crops don’t grow well in the Earthen soil. The Elves scorn their sister race for their breeding with the Humans and think that the Earth men would be better off like plants. Most of the races on the Earth dislike the Elves, but their retention of the magical prowess of their Chi Waran ancestors is what prevents them from being wiped out.
None of this is the plot to any of the projects I have planned, just expository information. The “Earth” in this setting is just a fantasy parallel to the real Earth.

Solid work, anon. I like the low poly style. Through, browsing through the images, I noticed inconsistencies with flat/low poly surfaces and rounded/higher poly surfaces. For example sometimes boobs have edges, sometimes they are perfectly round. Same with hair. Is this intentional? Has it a purpose? I haven’t made any of them yet, but I’m thinking a lot of them would look rather penisy. I haven’t designed many plants, and have only designed a few more creatures, so I’ll get into doing more studies of those types of things eventually.
Sometimes I like to go out into nature and look at all of the strange plants and animals (insects typically) and take inspiration from them. You’d be surprised at how many alien-looking things you can find really close to where you live.

Nora, Bosequias, and Kalchas are the only ones that I have real plans for right now, and they’re meant to go together into the same project. I’m not really focused on having a particular style at the moment, I’m just doing what feels natural to me. Of course with a methodology like that, there’s bound to be inconsistencies. Here’s a creature I made based off of a lacewing. I gave it more of a hunchback to flatten the surface of its back so that it could be boarded and piloted by putting some type of cabin on it. I also figured that it could be hollowed out like in Morrowind. Its polycount looks insufficient when it’s at a large scale, but looks pretty normal when it’s regular sized. I haven’t done anything interesting with it yet.

I edited your image a bit to make more clear what I mean. I reduced the scale of the legs to 83% (in blender units from 1.000 to 0.830). Maybe I even overdid it a bit and you could use a scale of 90% even to retain more of the "exaggerated" look. But anyhow, I hope it helps visualizing the scaling options in this side by side comparison. I like your style so far.

Well I’m glad you guys like her anyways. With regards to her legs, I was thinking about maybe just making her float, but I might not since those legs were probably what I put the most work into. Either way, she’s going to have some type of adjustments made to her.
My idea for her was that she’s the queen of the golems (or at least a large population of them), and is a sorceress that specializes in anatomical modification magic, almost like a body mechanic. Pic related is what her body looked like when I started the project. Obviously I removed her breasts, but with her powers she would have the ability to stretch them out and squeeze them back in at will, like those cartoon characters that try to push their gut in and all of that mass goes to their feet or something, but with her it would go to her thighs/butt of course.

I like the lighting here. It's not flat like it usually happens with area lighs. Did you use any sort of volumetrics? Or is it done with gloom in compositor nodes perhaps? Is this rendered with AgX or Khronos?

The other renders are interesting too. They could even make up a captivating world to explore (assuming they get used as part of your game project or at least related to it).

Gonna post another Nora thing since it’s been a few days. This is from a scene I’ve been trying to get finished, but my progress came to a halt because Bosequias is a part of it and I haven’t finished him yet.
I partially created this thread because I wasn’t quite in the mood to do any 3d modeling at the moment, so I’ve mostly been doing origami, drawing, and I even coded again for the first time in 3 weeks. So of course, I haven’t gotten much 3d work done.

It had been a while since I worked on that scene, but the simplicity of the lighting surprised me when I opened it back up to investigate. I used a sun light to create the sharp sunspots on the floor, then I used some point lights in the middle of the windows for something that has falloff while also intensifying the light around the windows themselves. I don’t believe I did much else with it.
Sometimes when I create scenes I do it to get simple ideas out of my head, and some of these ideas even come from my dreams. I guess it’s a way of cataloging my ideas so I can use some of them later when I go and finally design a game world.

I believe I’ve finalized Bosequias’ design. Now I just need to turn his anatomy blockout into a unified mesh, then rig him. His legs were the thing I got caught up on the most. I tried giving him more human-looking legs but it just didn’t seem to fit. Eventually I decided on more frog-like anatomy, and I think that suits him much better.

And here’s an old project of a click beetle I decided to finish. I gained a curiosity for them because I usually find them wandering around in my room during the summer. Click beetles aren’t known to damage things or carry diseases, so I don’t mind them being around. Plus they’re fun.
I had to dig through scientific papers to figure out how to model one of these guys since there doesn’t seem to be many artistic resources for beetle anatomy, let alone click beetle anatomy. I was planning on eventually making a new one since I have a few click beetle carcasses sealed away in ziploc bags that I can study.
I had an idea for another character that had an upwards-facing beetle as a head, and the beetle's elytra were shaped like a mask.

My intention isn’t necessarily to create a lewd game, but rather a crude game, or at least a weird one. With my interest in history, I have always had a liking for artifacts and artwork from foreign and primitive cultures, and I’m fascinated by how these artifacts can range wildly from possessing a very strange and alien sense of beauty, all the way to a profound level of ugliness and obscenity, and even a sense of terror that you don’t see anywhere else. Sub-Saharan artwork is one of my favorites because of how intensely it exhibits these qualities. Because these come from cultures that differ from ours, they have different ideas of what is socially acceptable, and the casual depiction of genitals is common. That combination of the erotic and the grotesque is something that gets my blood flowing, as it fills me with an indescribable emotion like no other. To summarize, I am just a genuine weirdo, and that’s why Bosequias has his cock and balls out.

I’m probably not the best person to go to for lighting advice because the way I set up my lighting can be rather haphazard, but the thing that helps me the most is having a sense of mood for the scene I want to create. I ask myself how I want to feel if I were in the environment I’m creating. What would make this scene emotionally or aesthetically impactful? A lot of the time when I’m out and about, if I’m in a place that feels nice to be in, I will take note of what color the lighting is and where it’s coming from. It’s more of a subconscious process, but observing effective lighting (not necessarily good lighting) can help develop the senses.

I see. The sub-saharan influence is certainly visible in your works. It's a rather uncommon interest and choice of style nowadays, but the more it evokes curiosity. Combined with the liminal spaces, the visuals become something unique.

On that note: Nice job with the eel-guy. It deserves just as much appreciation as the boobas.
I totally dig Noras outfit. Especially the glasses are a nice touch on her.

Yes, that's definitely helpful and a good tip in my books. Lately I have started to be more mindful and observing when it comes to the atmosphere of places I am visiting. Places that have some sort of emotional impact on myself. Or simply analysing works by other artists. But at the same time there is the technical aspect - I certainly need more experience with Blender and its tools/settings to achieve the results I envision. It feels like I am lacking in that department ... practice makes perfect, I guess ...

Also Blender 4.5 dropped yesterday with many new changes. Got me excited to work on some projects again too.

I’m glad you care about my eel. It does seem that the women I make overshadow everything else, since people care about that the most, but I don’t blame them because that’s also what I care about the most.
Another thing I also noticed recently is how the low brightness level of my monitor affects what I create. Sometimes I look at renders or games and don’t understand why people like the way they look since they’re too dark to see anything significant. It occurred to me that most people don’t keep their monitors on the minimum brightness level with an anti-blue filter since they actually have lives and don’t suffer from blue light strain, so they can see much more than I do. Why I point this out is that the things I make tend to pop in spite of the earthy colors because I design things using a darker screen.

Totally understandable. I had a similar issue in the past. Often I'd reduce the brightness level, so that the screen is easier on the eyes, especially when working into the evenings and late night. But as of right now I am using a better monitor and calibrate it with SpyderX Pro, which also adjusts and locks the brightness level.

I haven’t gotten a ton of visual work done recently because I’ve been working on doing some research, reading, and writing so I can flesh out my characters more. I have made character descriptions for both Nora and Bosequias, though their descriptions are more about what they are, rather than who they are as individuals. The designs of the descriptions may not be final, but I think they turned out well enough for now.

I’m glad you like the newer renders I’ve been doing. I’ve been trying to advance from simply modeling characters into actually putting my world together, that way people can see what my intentions are. I’ve been called a coomer in the past because of some of the things I make, and that isn’t a false accusation, but there’s a lot more to me than that.

Here’s a more up-close shot of one of Bosequias’ arms. I was having trouble figuring out how his arms would be able to communicate to the rest of his body, but I eventually had an idea that his arms would be separate organisms, albeit simpler ones, that are trained to respond to his actions by reeling their belts back and forth to improve the power of his punches. It also acts as a suspension system to reduce stress on his body.
