Would those discussion highlights being spoilers mean that anything before them isn't good?
>>
>>288224235
So, the 'Lord Restis' that Ininia serves is definitely stuck in a tree, right? The staff that she uses to communicate with him looks like its made from coiled branches, her research is into silverwood specifically and she is looking for some kind of evolved version of the tree symbiosis, and its why she describes herself as Lord Restis's "hands and feet". Somehow he's stayed conscious, but he can't move around anymore so Ininia has to do everything for him.
It also explains why we've never seen him at Brimhat meetings, AND where the Brimhats get their magic ink from. Lord Restis is their supply.
I'm likewise betting that Ininia is herself host to a silverwood seed to save her life, which Lord Restis used to heal her, explaining both her loyalty to him and her resentment towards the pointed caps for hiding healing magic from the world. From her perspective, she's a crusader of a righteous cause to help people.

I can't wait for the day that Coco invents a spell that makes you unable to be targeted by other spells, acting as a protection against the very magics that the pact outlaws (and thus, making those forms of magic no longer frightening) and also making her outright immune to the memory wipe magic that knights use.
Declawing forbidden magic and making the pact irrelevant, while also flipping a massive middle finger at the Knights Moralis by removing the only card they have to play.

Angry Coco is where its at. Smol, but unrelenting and ready to fight the world. Thats the part that Easthies is rightly scared of, because he sees in her someone who doesn't give a SHIT about the pact, only whether or not people are being help or saved. And worse yet, her ideals are sympathetic and pure. Difficult to contest. Easily spread to others. She challenges and erodes the pact with every action she takes and exception she carves out to save lives.

First of all, the characters’ stupidity in this anime is off the charts, those knights who want to wipe the memory of an uninterrogated witness yet let themselves get caught off guard by a kid. After all, they could have been killed by a few archers, not to mention some kind of magical or non-magical bomb, since they’re flying so close together.

It’d be better if no one accidentally invented "magic" like gunpowder.
But honestly, it wouldn’t even make a difference, because if they only noticed the use of powerful magic after it blew up so hard it sent a 100-meter-high column of water shooting into the air, that means they definitely don’t have any sensors to detect it.
How does this bunch of incompetent idiots plan to fight serious sorcerers?

Qifley isn’t much better, he knows he’s dealing with a very dangerous thing that could even blow up a store, yet without taking any precautions, he draws a circle with it. Worse than a schoolkid.

I don't really know how the story plans to go, but given Qifrey's personality, realistically he's really risk becoming extremely emotionally dependent on Coco as she's the more emotionally tough and self-directed of the two and he can't just erase her memories to go back to how it used to be like he set up with Olruggio.
>>
>>288226030
How do they expect to fight mad sorcerers who use magic they know nothing about, when they can barely hold their own against kids in a fight, let their teacher intimidate the whole group, and are otherwise complete idiots who start off by aggressively trying to wipe people’s memories, destroying valuable evidence and hurting people for no reason? Anyway, we can already see in the anime itself that their attitude is exactly why no one wants to report anything to them, including the government supervisor sent specifically for that purpose.
What could go wrong?
>>
>>288226030
Why would the knights be worried about archers?
Like even in America, the home of militarized police, they don't prepare to get into a Micheal Mann's Heat tier gunfight whenever they go out to handle a public disorder incident.

>>288226071
The way I see it, the story is setting up for Coco to be somehow disappointed/betrayed by Qifrey's past, possibly from something she learns in the Tower of Tomes after the third exam. This causes her to go Brim since Qifrey has been pretty much the only thing holding her back since like Volume 8. Also has the side effect of giving Qifrey something to worry about forever, permanently solving Qifrey's Silverwood problem

After all, something this fucking dangerous should be kept in the basement of a top-secret research facility accessible only to a handful of the best scientists, with everyone else kept out.
Why those threes are not erased outside the labs?
Because with the way things have been going so far, it’s only a matter of time before shit hits the fan.

I really want there to be a full-on conversation between Coco and Iguin. It’s a shame that this stupid tactic didn’t even work on the kids, because they were caught off guard by a friend flying in and a low-level fire spell.
They don’t have any intelligence, absolutely none. I mean, they have "intelligence" in the sense of a guy they sent to keep order in the provinces, but he wouldn’t dare report anything to them because he knows that saying they’re incompetent, aggressive and "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" is a heavy understatement.

Strike? The attack would be like them leveling the area from a great distance with heavy bomb spells, it would be foolish, but at least it would be in line with established doctrine.
Meanwhile, they’re leaving themselves open to any attack or ambush.
>>
>>288226206
>Another stupidity: why are the trees used to make ink and the technical documentation for the rings being kept in local labs guarded by literally just a few wizards?
Why in the world would that make sense? How are witches supposed to get ink if they have to go to some secret basement to get it? It's an everyday necessity. Besides, that shop is only accessible to witches, only witches are allowed on the island that town is on.
>>288226334

They weren't burnt, it was just the capture banners. Those have different seals and prioritize capturing strength since they can simply repair it.

Brimcaps usually work alone, experimenting on some Forbidden Seal or something. They're (usually) not terrorists who want to bring down society, just people with a habit of casting forbidden magic. That's why they don't expect an ambush, most Brimcaps are scriptkiddies rather than master hackers.

Has she? She never actually says no to casting magic that goes against the pact. She's against Forbidden Magic but her definition of forbidden magic is "magic that makes people unhappy". Just look at the exact words she says, she never actually promotes the Principles. If anything, her attitude that "magic is amazing and should be used to help people" is very Brimcap. The pointed hats would stand back and not help if it would break the principles. Think about it, if the only spell that can help her mom or save Agott or whatever needs to be drawn with Blood-Ink, do you think she'll hesitate?

Level 1: Coco will cast whatever spell she needs to in order to help people, regardless of the rules.

The former is basically guaranteed, the latter is less likely unless the Brimhats suddenly become more sympathetic person by person.

That's even worse, because it means they're messing around with extremely dangerous magic without fully understanding how it works and without taking the proper precautions
Non-technical folks just don’t realize that the "programming language of reality" is something that makes an atomic bomb look like a harmless toy, and putting such power in the hands of irresponsible people is a recipe for catastrophe, or even the end of the world

In their defense, the Brimhats are keenly aware that despite their best efforts magical knowledge has been lost. There are simply forms of forbidden magic that they know *exist* but the pointed caps successfully annihilated all of the books about them, meaning that they are having to re-create ancient spells and figure out how they actually work from scratch. Those are kinds of magic that they have no choice but to use without really understanding yet, that knowledge only growing through experimentation.

Good part is relative.
Most people agree that the good part of Jojo Part 4 starts when Kira shows up. But talking about Kira when someone is just starting the manga is still a total spoiler, and it doesn't mean that the first few volumes don't have good and entertaining content. Just that what comes after is even better.

In that case we can talk about arguably the most well animated scenes of the year so far - Coco's flight in episode 3 and Qifrey's water dragon in episode 5 (Frieren and JJK had bum seasons).
For me, I was really impressed with how the anime managed to capture the sense of joy and whimsy that the manga had regarding Coco's flight. I could complain that they made her out to be going too fast, but the increased sense of tension was worth it. Its been a while since we last got a flight scene with that level of quality.

When it comes to fan art, as the series goes on, Agott becomes more and more the self-insert/basic stock character and Coco becomes the cooler one people build the illustration around.
Coco has too much character development to stay as the ingenue. She starts becoming more of an axis that stuff pivots around because of her personality, rather than just her role.

Its basically the case that only the Knights are trained in combat magic.
Outside of exceptions like Qifrey, most mages are not fighters, nor ever thought about needing to learn. Nor is the system set up so that they'd ever learn how to. Anyone who was openly teaching their apprentices magical combat techniques would probably be preemptively lobotomized.

Speaking of which, Shirahama said in her episode livetweeting that Qifrey knows how to wield a sword because he traveled alone for some time in his youth and had to pick up a sword for self-defense. Frieren's first episode was the peak of the show.
Like that is literally as good as the series ever gets.
The immediate boom from that was deserved, but really whats left is just inertia. Frieren is a series with like 1 volume worth of potential that has now awkwardly tried to transition into being a battle manga while both the writer and the artist suck at drawing fights or writing adventure.

Witch Hat Atelier has a slower start, but Shirahama is much better at playing to her strengths as a writer and building the series around what she's good at.

>the knights moralis are the only military task force the witches have, and they're oppressive while also managing to cover the entire kingdom they're assigned to with like, 10 people
>the brimhats talk about making people see the truth but there's never been a case of them publically denouncing all the evil shit brim hats have ever done, when the secret is so fragile and spoiling it would cause such a massive uproar
>literally just going into a busy square and shouting "anyone can cast magic with a pen and paper"
>brim hats barely have any traitors despite the opressive rule
the bones of the story are really good, and if they weren't held up by a ramshackle set of ideas i'd be more hyped about it but the entire manga seems to run on wishful thinking and i can't suspend my disbelief

There's way more knights than the few named ones we follow, it's the Brimhats that are like ten or so.
>>
>>288252966
The Brimhats aren't freedom fighters, they are egoists with varying levels of anti-social tendencies. Iguin is basically the only one with an ideology greater than, "I want to be a warlord" or "I hate everyone".
Also, whats to say that they haven't done that before, and all it resulted in was a mass lobotomy incident? Magic already had to be erased from the world's mind once before. Nothing is stopping witches from doing it again if there's a leak. Make yourself a public target and the Knights Moralis will just swoop in and lobotomize the city in a few hours anyhow.
That is probably what drove Iguin to seek out kids like Coco to plant in Cone Hat society. A kid that wouldn't be lobotomized for having a sympathetic backstory, but who'd be an outsider to the system that would seek to change things. Coco is uniquely competent at that, but who knows many failures he's had so far. She could be attempt #100, for all we know.

There definitely are more Knights Moralis than we see. But there'd be no point to introducing a bunch more of them when the main squad fills the role well.

Part of the issue is that any Brimhats that would be sensible or reasonable get filtered out early by the Knights Moralis and the general paranoia culture of Witch society.
Oh, you're a witch that just wants to experiment on healing babies with ass and brain cancer? Too bad, the Masque of the Red Death shows up at your door and demands you cease immediately or bye-bye to your hippocampus. And if you tell a buddy about your work in private, he's been raised from childhood to narc on you ASAP.
All you got left are ones that are willing to live in obscurity, doing whatever experiments they want in top secrecy. And ones that are willing to kill a bitch to stay free.

They make their own super villains by basically applying natural selection to the Brimhat species. Anything less than the sneakiest or the meanest get lobotomized early.

it's fine to assume that it might've happened before, but without the story giving you a hint at the possibility of it happening it might aswell just be empty speculation. as it is the timeline in WHA is that using magic freely lead to it being outlawed and the general public kept in the dark about, and then an unspecified amount of time between that and now where the brimmed hats have just kind of existed in the shadows causing some chaos and basically waiting for a messiah, which at the scale of the story seems kind of retarded. like i said i don't think the premise is bad but it asks for a lot of good will from the reader to not think too hard about the social and political ramifications of a society as opressive as the pointed hats

I'll be the first to admit to being a Coco/Agott shipper but Tartah is still an entirely legitimate option and I get the feeling part of the fanbase has developed a potentially unhealthy relationship with the work and the author where they're 100% convinced Shirahama is going to deliver on the gay ships due to her appreciation for series like The Owl House and She-ra and would likely turn on her if she doesn't, regardless of how the story would go. Even if it just remained vague like >>288245622 suggested some people would accuse her of baiting. I hope it doesn't come to that because I myself wish she'll deliver but I'm not looking forward to the exaggerated fallout if she doesn't.
>>
>>288245437
We need some character backstories.
>>
>>288253030
The Brimhats are closer to being reactionaries than revolutionaries, like they're whole goal is restoring the previous status quo that they idealize.
>>
>>288253487
I doubt Coco is going to end up with anyone at all, even Tartah. I did think it was likelier for her to hook up with him when Silver Eve's started since the arc was kickstarted by them working together but then he completely disappears from the story and Agott getting all the best hype moments with Coco. By the time, Tartah returns at the very end, it feels like the author just did it because she suddenly remembered he was around and then he disappears again. Tartah got shafted the hardest by Silver's Eve, despite literally everyone else getting their own spotlight moment.

crazy how this thread is mostly people trying to sell the idea that this series being terrible is actually a good thing
>>
>>288253129
The levels to the capture pendant and Easthies's psychotic breakdown at the end of the Silver Festival tell me that it isn't anything new.
I see that you perceive the average Brimhat as wanting to replace the powers that be, when they really don't. They don't want to be bureaucrats, they want to be irresponsible wizards that do whatever they want and are just pissed that the government won't let them.
They're hardly a group or an ideology. They're a loose collection of criminals with various reasons for being criminals.
>>
>>288254771
my point about the brimhats doesn't have anything to do with what their goals are, it's that for the scale of the setting they are weirdly unimpactful. with the magnitude of the events that take place in the series, like the day of the pact, and the impact witches can have on the land and its people, things seem to have stood still in terms of major events and acts of terrorism from forces opposing the pointed hats considering how borderline tyrannical their ruling force is. this is a critique of the writing itself more than anything else, the background fluff is just very weak and doesn't convincingly support the narrative of the pointed hats being able to go on with the way they do things, because no faction should be able to mind wipe their citizens for minor offenses for the sake of a rule and not spawn enemies.

>or maybe the cast being little girls turned them off
Normalfags feel like they're watching kids cartoons if too many of the cast are kids. It makes them feel insecure.
Also normalfags are anti lolicon enoughj to reject a cast of little girls. Even the "anti woke" spammer hates lolicon.

The world does have a bunch of 'scars' on it from unregulated magic use. But are you asking for something like giant monsters created by the Brimhats occasionally wrecking a city or them blowing up a city block and turning it into a void when a spell goes awry or something?

The guy who spilled his spaghetti at Agott using the same exact words Agott thought about Coco while in bed the night before the festival.

I'm sorry, this manga is really good but I just can't get over the fact that witch hats with brims look so much cooler

It's not just a pen and paper, you also need the special tree ink, which does make it much harder to figure out randomly. But, it is a tree that just grows in the wild, even if it might be pretty rare. Generally I agree, but while it could be done a little better maybe, like there's no fucking way realitlstically they'd just be selling contraptions with magic circles in plain view to the general public if they gave any shits about preserving the secret, the central conceit of the story was always going to require at least a bit of suspending disbelief, and mostly the stuff the author does with it is good and justifies the but of handwaving.

I realized Witch Hat is a thinly disguised Code Geass prequel and I don't know how to feel about it. Like, Coco is just straight up CC.

> I'm sorry, this manga is really good but I just can't get over the fact that witch hats with brims look so much cooler

This is important, I feel. There is a reason why Brimhat Coco looks so *fucking cool*: because becoming a Brimhat is a tempting offer. Its freedom. Its empowerment. Its undoing your shackles and embracing all that magic has to offer, including the solution to your problems that the pact says you can't have or use. We, the reader, *want* Coco to meet her full potential and come into her power, and her becoming a Brimhat is thus tempting to us as well. Even though we know its as much a bad thing as it is a good one.

If the Brimhats didnt look sick as hell, if Coco's Brimhat design sucked, the gravitational pull of "yes Coco, give in to the dark side its fucking sweet over here" would not be felt as strongly.

Where are the hot anime girls with watermelon sized tits and huge asses?

Banned by the pact.
>>
>>288252966
I don't think brimhats want the masses to know how to use magic. They don't like the resttrictions imposed on it. For example the reason they want to only tell the king about magic and the ink source is to introduce a healer with strong influence on the people and have pointed cap faction lose their leverage, not to cause mass chaos. Having the plebs become aware of magic wouldn't do anyone any good.

Convincing surface that promises systems, rules and consequences, but beneath it - just recycled mush. I'd say the bones are all thin and outside. Exactly like that other very popular show.

This show just makes me want to stop and go read Wizard of Earthsea by Le Guin again. NOT the anime. Properly woke too, OLD woke.

Anime only here, I disagree with you. If the state prohibited programming(akin to magic in our world, because programming can also be used for evil deeds in our world) I too would be pissed.

Programming shouldn't be banned or only selected few should be able to use because some use to steal money or whatever else, that's retarded.

ANyway I hope the state in WHA get mindraped
