It turned out to still be alive so I tried rebuilding it, only for one of the ZIF connectors to break while I was swapping out the screen. I guess the connector is attached to the board with tungsten or something because neither of my soldering irons can remove it.

In my experience, cranking your soldering iron up to over 380 degrees Celsius solves the problem. Then again, I remember trying to melt the solder on a dead GPU and it felt like what you described, so I dunno.
