What's a 10/10 anime that gets zero attention on /a/? For me, it has to be Nana. It's a shame that the manga has been on "hiatus" for 17 years and will likely never be finished, but the 2006 anime really is a masterpiece.

Nana is weird. It's a strange outlier in the world of anime/manga, and it seems to have a unique dedicated fanbase for this reason.

For one, it's much more squarely dedicated at teenage girls as a target demographic than anything else I can think of. It's too 'adult' for the kinds of girls who'd normally read regular shoujo and aren't interested n the complex, messy relationship drama it tries to do. But at the same time it seems to have a very teenage perspective on adulthood, where it almost seems to fetishise being able to do basic things like go out and smoke and drink, and on top of this focuses on characters who are decidedly immature, especially the protagonist who has an obviously much lower mental age than her actual one. Because of this it's generally insufferable to watch for people who are older and more mature than the characters and can see that most of the drama results from them not being able to commit to even basic responsibilities or think about the effects of their actions.

A huge thing that also seems to sell it to a lot of people (and this seems to be a good part of the appeal for both genders) is the "inner city band scene vibe" that it pulls off. That seems to be one thing that really hooks people who'd otherwise not be into shoujoish drama like this.

>>288308608
>I bet your next thread will be about how Monster is a hidden gem
Nana really is the closest thing to a shoujo equivalent of Monster. Especially in how it gives off the appearance of something radically more mature than other things in the same basket, but is significantly much more childish than it must seem to many people.

They way she goes about doing this is what makes her so absolutely slutty though. She starts off as a homewrecker, fucking a married dude while in highschool, then clings like a puppy to another dude who's too terrified to break up with her given her attitude even after finding a girl much more appropriate for him, then starts having one night stands with the guy who knocks her up because she can't be assed to use any protection at all, while letting some other cuck simp over her.

Bodycount isn't capturing how little regard she has for how she gets into and deals with her relationships.

>it almost seems to fetishise being able to do basic things like go out and smoke and drink
That's because smoking and drinking and band stuff were considered cool when it was made. And overall related to counter-culture that the punk bands exist in.
>it's generally insufferable to watch for people who are older and more mature than the characters and can see that most of the drama results from them not being able to commit to even basic responsibilities
It's only insufferable because you hoped them to be better.
Nana is reality-affirming.
Nobuo treats Hachi based on his loser idealism and loses. Takumi treats Hachi as the kind of woman she is and handles things in a way that works. Idealists hate this because they don't like how the reality is.
It's also quite nuanced and shows different kind of possible relationships like Jun and her boyfriend being kinda stable but feeling more like business acquaintances.

And then a man finally takes responsibility for her (which she is incapable of) and the viewers mistake him for a villain. It's a masterpiece flirting with uncomfortable realities, challenging the fantasies that we still (and even more increasingly) live in today.
>>
>>288322251
>That's because smoking and drinking and band stuff were considered cool when it was made.
To be clear, I'm pointing out something fairly specific that it does. It's not that it portrays smoking etc. or makes the characters look good doing it, i.e. Cowboy Bebop makes Spike look really cool when he lights up, and that is something that defines that character's style, and I like and am fine with that.

But I don't consider what Bebop does to 'fetishise' smoking. It's the way Nana will do stuff like specifically have a shot/panel that deliberately lingers on a close up of a packet of cigarettes, making out like it's some of object of desire itself that's special enough to warrant this, like a shoujo would ordinarily portray stuff like fashionably cool clothing, that feels off to me. What I'm getting as is that, I feel like if you already are of age, and smoke or hang around people who do, something feels odd and naive about this, and what Nana does seems to feel less like portraying stuff the characters do naturally, or in a way that looks authentically cool, and more like creating fetish objects out of things that would be forbidden, and desirable, to a teenaged audience. This is just a hangup I with with it specifically, and I find it 'telling' of what kind of series this is, though I don't even have an issue with people deciding to smoke if they understand what they're doing.

>It's only insufferable because you hoped them to be better.
I'm quite willing to watch interesting series about heavily flawed characters. Nana's problem I find is that I can only find Hachi moping on episode after episode about her self made problems so interesting. There is nuance and a certain degree of depth to it all, and style, which is why I keep coming back to it every so often, but when I do I quickly see why I found most of it a slog to get though, and couldn't honestly begrudge anyone for simply hating it regardless of what merits it might offer.

Isn't the purpose of punk subculture kinda just doing everything that you shouldn't?
Also there's two levels of this: a "neutral" depiction of punk culture (smoking = bad but show it because the characters are punk), or the depiction itself can be doused with the culture (ie. the show "thinks" smoking is cool and depicts it as cool). Yeah, Nana is somewhat doused in the culture as well. And to me there's nothing wrong with that. Not all media needs to be an instruction manual. Think for yourself.
>I can only find Hachi moping on episode after episode about her self made problems so interesting
I felt it was interesting, amusing, emotional and illuminating experience
>I found most of it a slog to get though
I actually like the detailed storytelling. It allows building atmosphere and painting a dramatic arc. Though I remember some parts feeling a bit slow and I can see it being slow compared to modern anime. Still 5x more engaging than any book I've been forced to read in school, so I guess it's relative.

How many times do we have to keep litigating this? You all wouldn't have to play the "shoujo means girl and otome is a kind of girl, right?" game if you liked actual textbook shoujo. Multiple real shoujo aired last season, and the overwhelming response, such that anyone actually watched them, was utter bewilderment at the motivations of any of the characters. You all are completely alienated when a series actually appeals to the sensibilities of real women. The best you can handle is a LaLa comedy but even then you piss and shit yourselves when MC falls for the wealthy rapechad love interest

>Isn't the purpose of punk subculture kinda just doing everything that you shouldn't?
You're not understanding what I'm saying. I'm not saying "this is punk, and that involves doing naughty things, and I disapprove", I'm saying "instead of seeing things portrayed in a style that feels actually cool and punk, I'm seeing something that is only trying to look cool in a way that would appeal to 14 year old Japanese girls, but comes off as lame and tryhard to me".

>>288322593
>And then a man finally takes responsibility for her (which she is incapable of) and the viewers mistake him for a villain.
My take on this is that the two basically deserve each other, they're both irresponsible, indulgent and impulsive, and are more of less well matched as a couple of fuckbuddies forced to take responsibility for each other. On top of this, it's great for everyone else who'd wanted either of them beforehand for them to be taken, because they each 'save' everyone else from the horrible reality that dealing with either of them would be for any other, as a perfect match of toxic fuckups who complete each other. It sounds romantic when I put it like that, but I genuinely hate both of them and would wish them to get on with their lives however they can as long as it means they don't screw up anyone else's.
