I know it's pointless to discuss what could or should have happened because Omega Sandro isn't capable of writing a coherent story but if he really wanted Purgatory to be shitters it should have been a plot point. For example: Toyoda knows he only has four or so fighters that could actually compete in the Kengan matches, so he actually chooses which fighter goes in, and plans to match his best fighters against shitters (this would require Sandro to realize that picking first is NOT an advantage. The fact that people keep acting like it's the opposite is one of the most baffling aspects of this arc) and gambles on being able to sneak in three more wins via cheating, bringing in a bunch of gimmick fighters, his fighter being murdered by some Kengan psycho (for example he intentionally picks fighters with aggravating personalities against opponents with a kill count), and Nogi having to recruit shitters due to lack of time.

It's really grating how for the majority of the fights the actual fight is irrelevant. As annoying as the ringout was it's at least an example of the result of the fight being influenced by the events in it. Arguably an instance of the weaker fighter finding a way to overcome his opponent, even if it was dumb. But for most of them nothing that actually happens in the fight matters because it all ends in "actually this guy is stronger and he wins". Nothing about the actual exchange matters, it's all inevitably predetermined. Some of them are legitimately written more like Yu-Gi-Oh scenes than actual fights >opponents spend five minutes triggering effects while yelling at each other >winner smugly reveals their final trap card>fighter with the higher attack stat wins

Willem from start to end was portrayed as a careful, cautious character, the one most cautious of the boomers, didn't overrate himself after beating them, only said he "managed to survive somehow". He was pointing out how dumb the Worm suicide ideology was. He was EXPLICITLY singled out even, by Yan, for being extremely perceptive for being able to detect how strong Shen was at first glance.Then the next time he fights, he fucks around with Akoya and lets down his guard until he suddenly can't overpower the naked toasty cop with his superman syndrome and 100% Guihun. Then despite Sandro claiming the "tiny cracks" were gone after that, the next time we see him, he's fundamentally the same character as Alan, rambling in pure unfiltered jobberspeak about how he's the strongest in the world, is completely unable to gauge that he's outclassed or perceive Raian's power until the moment of his death, and even Sean fights better than him. Absolute fucking travesty.
