I just finished the 0079 compilation movies after having zero knowledge of this series and holy shit. Even if the animation is a bit dated at times and the plot moves a bit too fast in the second movie (I guess it's the price to pay for it being a compilation of who knows how many episodes) it has blown my mind. I specially liked how the Zenon empire guys weren't one-dimensional bad guys, showing how they care for each other is a great way of communicating how pointless war is. The final battle between Char and Amuro is fucking kino too. What do I watch now? Zeta? Is it as good as this?
Zeta starts out almost comically darker and edgier but then Kamille starts punching out motherfuckers and its great, the Mark II is also best Gundam

They're all extremely well made and you should see all of them. There's also the late UC shows, F91 and Victory, but they may as well be Alternate Universe. The Alternate Universe shows are all stand alone (or within their franchise), your mileage may vary since they're mostly a retreat of ideas. At the very least watch G Gundam since it's the one AU that really feels like it's own thing (Martial Arts Tournament directed by Imagawa). Finally you have Turn A and it's prequel G-Reco. Absolutely watch Turn A at least, it's the end of Gundam as a series.

Its grounded in that the character reactions are believeable and watching the white base grow into the best unit of the EF is genuinely enjoyable to watch. Any sense that a real war is happening gets lost in melodrama instead of honing on the human tragedy and loss.
