Meruem is the perfect example of this since Togashi, at the one hand, is able to critique "totalitarianism" but, on the other hand, is not able to dismiss the possibility of a human being like Meruem existing. The story essentially kills him off once he becomes increasingly dangerous to the ideology.So you can say that the arc attempts and fails to understand communism by peeling back and dismissing the racist narratives that disguises it as "totalitarianism." At some point it gets too close to the light and puts the blinds back on, but it can't go back on the effort it made thus far and the reader is left in a weird state of limbo. Part of how this is expressed likely has to do with the particular history of Japanese communism and I'll need to read up on it. I've been reading Azuma's Otaku recently and I notice that Togashi is of the second generation of otaku in his schema, which could explain a lot.(2/2)

Most Hunters are this (including Ging and Biscuit); Gon and Killua are essentially kids bumbling through this libertarian fantasy. Here it's worth noting that, before the Chimera Ant arc, all disputes in HunterxHunter are about petty shit from a historical perspective. This is something that it shares with most battle shonen, but most of them give the illusion of world-historical significance to each arc by presenting the villain as a fantastical threat to the nondescript world system at large that needs to be defeated for things to go back to normal. The world of HxH is an unabashed capitalist hellscape and it doesn't even pretend that anything that Ging (for instance) is doing matters to "the world" at large.The significance of Nen probably changes at around the Chimera Ant arc where the show actually deals with world-historical events but the brief summary of things is that Gon was able to do it because god had predestined him for greatness and he cashed out his talent points with god to defeat Pitou. Only people with the mindset and the talent of Gon could have done it. But my thoughts on that are not well-formed.
