The villains in the sequel have been almost entirely underwhelming so it's good that the final battle at least involves some major threats. Hopefully they won't go down to more asspulls and instead end up being defeated through teamwork. There are a lot of potential allies who could join in, like the other dragon slayers, Gildarts, Diabolos, Elefseria, Athena and so on. The last three in particular should get some kind of a last big moment in the sequel since they likely won't appear again in any future works, such as the potential Ankhseram sequel Mashima has mentioned. Diabolos are dragon eaters, Elefseria has previously defeated a Dragon God and Athena is a weapon designed to kill dragons so they should all be capable of contributing something.

you know, it's strange, in a way, for all the flaws I know this series has, for all my own gripes and grievances with the way Mashima writes I have; the way some story arcs play out, the way characters can sometimes rubberband on their development to suit the story, the way we're almost asked to ignore the potential of interesting side characters for the main ones, even after all these years, I still think Fairy Tail is my undisputed number 1 animeI've had a lot of anime work their way into my top 10, top 5, or top 3, knocking out ones from before, but none of them have ever made me consider them even close to the same level as Fairy Tail, and yet, despite this, I could probably find among all those animes, ones with objectively better written plot hooks, story arcs, characters, worlds and magic systems, yet, if I were asked my favourite anime, still, I wouldn't give any of them a second glance as I tossed them aside and said Fairy Tailwhen it comes to watching anime, more often than not, I find myself drawn to the idea of just rewatching Fairy Tail, it's not that I don't like new anime coming out, because for every season there's at least a handful that catch my eye and I watch through, yet I must have rewatched the entire original series half a dozen times from start to finish, and the second series that picks up halfway through the GMG at least as much, and I don't know what keeps me coming back to itthere's something inherently alluring about this anime to me, something intrinsic to the series itself, something about the world, the magic, the characters, the story, everything, that I can't even say has me hooked anymore, its simply a part of my life, I never feel a need to rewatch it, but regularly will because I simply want to, for no other reason than I like itit's like checking in on old friends you haven't seen in a while, and there's something beautiful about it all that no other anime can or maybe ever will match
