And that's how fable tales usually handle such things, but shonen manga insist that darkness of dark magic has magical properties and actually does remove light, making darkness a concept that exists by itself and isn't just a lack of light Same can be done with ice magic. Absolute zero is just how we call lack of any heat whatsoever, but ice magic can make cold an existing by itself concept that can counter heat

My main gripe is that the gap between story and art creates a kind of disconnect.It's a bit similar to Nihei's works in that the concepts and art are excellent but he can't quite bring his world to life.
