It's been twenty years since the DEEN anime aired and I dare say nothing like it has come out since. Have you seen it? What do you think of it?
I find the character designs for the first season to be very fitting.
The atmosphere the anime evoked is rather unique, in my opinion.
They don't make big heads like they used to.
The first arc "Onikakushi-hen" brings the viewer into a pleasant, cheerful, even idyllic world, where the rules of reality eventually reveal themselves to be different from what is expected. The mystery and horror are both uncompromising, with no clear way to parse the events taking place on the screen. It is the iconic introduction to the village of Hinamizawa, where histories, passions, and opposing wills collide with monumental consequence.
>>288368755I love it even if it's a terrible adaptation. The atmosphere and horror is great but the story and characters are completely butchered.
those... were the days
We take on the viewpoint of Maebara Keiichi, intrepid protagonist of youthful age, who has moved to the village and finds himself surrounded by cute young girls, naturally. They tease and play games with him in the prematurely hot late spring season. Yes, this is indeed a horror anime.>>288369312It leaves much to be desired, but I think succeeds largely on account of its charm.
Like Keiichi, who has only been living in the village a few short weeks and yet has become very close to his new friends, I found myself becoming quickly and deeply attached to the members of the main cast. They are all colourful and vivid personalities that impress deeply upon you as more of their lives and struggles are revealed. Of course it helps that they are all very cute.
>>288368755>Best and most memorable character designs than later anime series>Gave us the best OP/ED credits songs>Had the best atmosphere I hate DEEN but I can at least admit they understood their projects.
It is that newfound warmth and love that comes under threat as Keiichi starts to doubt bits of his new life. Certain things whispered to be out of earshot, glances he can't understand, contradictions that start to mount. The pattern is not unlike the day of a Hinamizawan springtime, rich and verdant, yet turning to a hypnotic wash of orange as the evening cicadas start to cry. >>288369775Even with all its failings, I can't help but treasure this adaptation.
>>288368829cuties
I prefer Umineko.
>>288371009They're super cute in that art style.
Higu is goooood. Umi is baaaaaad. Nipah~
>>288368755It was incredible. Is it Deen's best work ever?
>>288368851nice
>>288371126Does this have an anime?
>>288374465No
>>2883744651 season that only adapts half of the story. Really bad. Go with the manga if you don't read VNs.
>>288374465Yes!
>>288368755Pure SOVL that none of the remakes ever captured
>>288368755Yes. It is a goddamn masterpiece. The OVAs are also beautiful and have yet to be surpassed.
>>288371126>rich people and their problems
>>288369312Very good summary, it's honestly staggering how much shit the adaption cuts out, it's a fun watch if you've already read the VN but is by far one of the weakest entry points to the series.
The low budget mid-2000s look really works for it. It wouldn’t be the same today.
Your friends are here, and they're happy to see you!
>>288380010Hello friends…I’ve missed you!

>>288368755
>>288368851It feels like a fever dream which is a great way to portray the delusions of the characters.
>>288369312It entirely depends on how you look at it. As an adaptation, it's shit because it cuts out much of the characterizations and world building, but then again you are adapting a very long, text-heavy visual novel series which focuses on the character's internal struggles. It's extremely hard to fit that into an anime format with limited episodes and still make it enjoyable. DEEN knew this and instead of trying to chase the impossible, they focused on visualizing the atmosphere of the characters' minds. You can't look at it through the VN's lenses because it's a different media with it's own pros and cons.
>>288369775I would like to remind you that Kira was also by DEEN. I love DEEN.
>>288381350They could have gotten closer if they included 1st person narration. Haruhi did at the time and it was a big success. Tons of shounen have that or outright 3rd person narration too (like Jojo). But, yeah, what they did worked atmosphere-wise, but the issue is that it feels like a perfect combination of staff members they've never been able to recreate after the first season.
>>288381239>>288382263Shit. I hadn't read the whole thread before posting.
>>288382263Man, I never liked how DEEN drew Satoko and Rika. They aren't 6 years old.
>>288369775There's something I really love about the atmosphere in the Deen anime (especially the first season) that was never replicated since.
>>288382309The first season was a lucky coincidence of various, usually bad factors, which played in their favor. One of the best examples is that the low budget turned into an advantage. They had to cheap out on the quality which made the visuals feel uncanny. A perfect condition for a creepy series like this. The rushed story and the fresh start after every arc also contributed to the confusion which the vn was striving for.
>>288368755Total waste of premise and my time. The idea of following different POV characters during the fall of a town to an ancient disease sounded quite enticing, but what we got instead was the different video game's bad endings and fucking time traveling loli. The gore is ok, I guess.
>>28836875520 year later and I still have not read the VNs.I really enjoyed the concept the reseting story where slightly different choices lead to different routes until it was revealed that every "loop" was actually a different universe. To this day, i deeply dislike the reveal that the the characters you got to know are dead in other universes but their copies are still able to somehow get deja vu of what other versions of them did.
>>288382346They could pass for six in >>288380010.
>>288383500You can view it in a way that their souls are connected across the fragments, just like how it was revealed in Kai when transitioning to the next world. They just don't have the memories.
>>288368755Higurashi was the first VN I ever read, so it holds a special place in my heart. Went to the game blind, had only seen clips prior to playing it from the DEEN anime (Rena's laugh, headstab, the chair scene etc.). I watched few episodes of Gou before starting to watch the DEEN anime, because it started airing just when I had just finished reading the VN, and I thought it was going to be a remake. While the DEEN anime had several flaws (Tatarigoroshi cut badly), the whole atmosphere was different compared to Passione's feel. Maybe it was the sharper colours and shading of DEEN that made it creepier at times. DEEN Higurashi is a classic
>>288372097>Is it Deen's best work ever?Holy shit newfag. Not even remotely close. Watch more DEEN anime.
>>288383770Everyone is super short and has huge heads there, they still reach past Rena's shoulders.
>>288368755>nothing like it has come out sinceWatch more anime. Literally the following year they made an intellectual version of Higurashi.
>>288384802Higurashi Kai (2007)?
>>288371126>he likes the one with an actual tranny in it
>>288380010Mion is taller than Keiichi, or at least the same height. I don't think this is accurate, they don't have full sprites in the vn iirc.
>>288371126It's so boring I can't even finish episode 2. No idea how it ended up more popular than higurashi in the west with that awful start.
>>288384246I wonder how it would look if GouSotsu got handled by a different studio. Shaft comes to mind. They have a knack on that kind of distubing atmosphere which made the 2006 Higurashi special.
>>288384802Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei isn't really that much like Higurashi desu niipah
hag
>>288368755Manga > VN > Deen
>>288368755I've played the VN a couple years ago, but haven't watched the anime.I do plan on watching it before watching Gou/Sotsu though.
>>288386619Modern shaft would be a bad choice they would have to spend so much money on hiring staff as independent contractors to get a team to pull off that atmosphere back that there would be nothing left for the animators.
>>288387139
>>288387412This is quite the claim. Anyone else agree?
>>288368755Did you mean "Casey and Friends", OP?
>>288388700Where did you get that popsicle?
>>288380010I'm home.
>>288383088Have you seen Shiki? That sounds more like what you're describing.
>>288384802>an intellectual version of HigurashiHidamari Sketch?
>>288368755My favorite anime.
>>288391873It's my second favorite, right after Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira (2011)
The vn is so good no way the anime can ever top it
>>288371126>>288386490I'm on chapter two right now and I can't believe Beatrice is at the mansion on the day of the family conference walking around in a miniskirt. This can't be happening!
>>288387139cute hag
>>288384751Mion looks like she could be 13.
>>288392218I feel like an anime could get pretty close if it had enough of a budget, with a full cour for each chapter.
>>288382549Sexy.
>>288387464Make sure you watch all the specials other than Outbreak.
>>288399815Never watched it, what's wrong with it?
>>288374465Maybe
>>288399835It's a dumb zombie apocalypse story.
>>288368755I'll never forget the first time I watched Higurashi. I watched the first 4 episodes in one sitting one night, and then I went to sleep thinking about all the mysteries and where the story was gonna go from now. It's a feeling that I've rarely felt again, going into a mystery story completely unspoiled. It's just a shame that the second season wasn't as memorable. I still clearly remember everything that happened in season 1, but season 2 is all a blur because the answers weren't as interesting as the mysteries. With that and the ending, I can see why Umineko ended up eclipsing it in popularity.
>>288399934The first half was interesting to watch with the military putting Hinamizawa into a lockdown while fear and confusion was spreading. The rest was outright retarded. K1 and Rena somehow casually dealing with dozens of armed, crazy villagers in close combat removed any sense of seriousness. Rika doing some 2deep4u monologue made it a bit of a comedy at that point. But it was an ad for a pachinko game at the height of the 2010s zombie craze so I wouldn't take it too seriously.
>>288401760Two Mions?!
>>288401760Two Shions?!
>>288368851I agree. Many whacky elements and it gets repetitive after a while, but the eeriness and mystery of the first ten episodes or so is captivating
>>288400320It's actually a VN chapter too, and it's just as bad there. The VN is actually somehow more rushed than the anime after you get to the big fight scene with Keiichi and Rena. And somehow the 2nd VN exclusive chapter follows the same structure. The beginning is nice and the club has to hide and sneak through Okinomiya without getting much attention, but after a while it becomes a goofy mess.
Lol
>>288369239Best arc
>>288368755I really liked it. There's something about living in the countryside that feels quite nostalgic and serene.
>>288390028Youtube ruined it for me, I only know it as the anime with the hot vampire. Is it any good?
>>288401760How could anyone mistake one for the other baffles me, size does matter.
>>288404879It's a matter of perspective, lightning and shading. It's canon that appearance-wise, they are exactly the same.
>>288405082It's the clothes. Shion's tight sweater will make anyone who wears it look bigger.
>>288404859It's a real slowburn that could have been fine with one cour instead of two, but the latter part was a really good payoff.
>>288404859I wish the characters were more developed, since underneath all the vampire stuff it's very much a human drama, but the good parts are pretty good.
>>288405082>It's canon that appearance-wise, they are exactly the same.Unless you get them naked.
>>288404029Rena's tone shift when Oyashiro-sama or Satoshi is mentioned made me addicted to BPD bitches. Is there any other well-written cluster B girls in anime? Fuck Yanderes.
>>288406841I bet Mion is more hairy down there.
>>288406976The way she says "He transferred out" is so good. Her VA is a perfect match for the character. I don't get how some people like the anon above prefer manga over the vn and even the anime as their main source of higurashi when the voice acting and music contribute a lot to it.
