>>288378588Seeing Japanese characters joke about america or britain and taking english seriously saddens me, they only care because they're a vassal country. And should they become proficient enough, it ends up exposing them to retardation of the highest scale.
>>288382211Yeah, sure.
>>288382211>they only care about the global language because (nonsense)
i thought english was mandatory in japan.i don't expect them all to be fluent but damn. english has got to be one of the easiest languages to learn. handful of letters, phonetic alphabet.
>>288382798>phonetic alphabetWhich gets completely ignored.English is easy because the verbs don't change much and it has little to no gendered nuances.
>>288382798I'm assuming English is your first language. You must have had a foreign language class, like French or Spanish. Do you think every kid from your high school class in now at least proficient in that language? Now to be fair, English is a lot more useful than any other foreign language, but I imagine the average person can still get by without knowing much of it.
>>288382798>english has got to be one of the easiest languages to learnMost other phonetic languages have hard rules on what sound each letter makes. English throws that out the fucking window, every word requires you just mindlessly memorize it's spelling. Our rules for conjugating verbs tenses and the plural form of some nouns is also purely on a word by word basis.
>>288382923I think it's different since America occupied Japan for some time and again, English is mandatory. In America other languages are electives and you can generally choose.
>>288382798>phonetic alphabetLatin had one. You somehow forgot how to use it.
>>288383104there are some idiosyncrasies but it's not nearly as bad as you suggest, also dropping gendered words makes it a whole lot easier.like is 'C' a hard sound of a soft sound? depends, but you could probably work it out phonetically if you knew enough to speak it.
>>288383065Fucking vibe language fr
NOU YAPANISU
>>288383143You can't work out anything in English. It's why imaginary names and words in fiction get pronounced differently between people playing the same game or reading the same book. It even extends to foreign words."A has some people pronounce "manga" and "ramen"as "mænga" and "ræmen""Ryu" becomes "Rah-eeyoo" etc etc"Tidus" vs "Tide-us"
>>288383209Tbf your examples is Americans being ignorant, it's not that different pronunciations exist, they just don't know how to read Latin.
Reverse engrish : https://youtu.be/kKoi6jAyLno?si=zFT9huJNjYnH5Egi
>>288382798Japanese is structured completely fucking differently. The only consonant that doesn't end in a vowel for them is N. They also lack a lot of our consonants like L, V and Th. They also don't have a short A (cat, bat, etc.)So zei endo appu raningu Ingurishu raiku zisu. Yu kan purababuri shi hao zisu wudo kaso samu konfiushian.
>>288383277There is a city in my DnD campaign called "Giomaya". How should I pronounce it according to English rules?
>>288383368gee-o-mi-yai would use a hard g myself.
HYU-MAN. IZZU. DEDDO.
>>288383442Hard as in g in game? Why not soft like in giant?"Jee-oh-mah-yah"Like, who tf knows, there are no rules.
>>288383488yeah hard as in GAY
>>288383300>So zei endo appu raningu Ingurishu raiku zisu. Yu kan purababuri shi hao zisu wudo kaso samu konfiushian.i enjoyed sounding that out phonetically.this is just how they speak it though. there is nothing stopping them from learning to write it perfectly.you're telling me they can learn 10,000 little scribbles that all mean different things but they can't read some Cat in the Hat?
>>288383368I don't even think this is a valid spelling, it should be spelled as Giomaia. It doesn't change the transcription though.I would agree with >>288383442. Interestingly, Google translate pronounces it differently, and I have to spell it like "Gyomaia" to get the pronunciation I would expect. I wonder if it's intended.
>>288383517>>288383546If it's supposed to sound like the name "Maya" it should be spelled similarly no?
>>288383574I mean, are you trying to transliterate a foreign word or make up a new English world? As you know, there are no rules in English so you can do whatever you want.
>>288383595conjunction junctionwhat's your functionthere are rules, stop hating on English. the world was built by those who speak the King's.
>>288383595>make up a new English worldThis. If you follow the reply chain you'll see it's some city name a nerd came up with for D&D.>here are no rules in English so you can do whatever you wantThat was the point I was trying to make about the language. In a different language where you actually use the phonetic alphabet we wouldn't be having a debate about how to pronounce something, even if it was a fake word.
>>288383300Japanese is a squid octopus crab language whose speakers can't find it in them to focus on living which goes against the deep sea insects instinct. They're a people weaker every generation because what they say in group and think when alone don't even know each other. Like hitting a pinball flipper so hard you break the glass and glitch cabinets next to you. Adios y hasta manana loco conquistador hessian. Anunkan kooooooodachi~ I just met u call me maybe ">>". >Tuxedomocha every year on my birthday<<Sheridan obviously
>>288383619>In a different language where you actually use the phonetic alphabet we wouldn't be having a debate about how to pronounce something, even if it was a fake word.it's broadly a phonetic language, despite being a mongrel language and having different rules for some words.

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet.
I tell myself all sorts of dramatic stories to feel anything so don't assume. Hey broderick ready to suck up your filthy monkey pride and make peace or are you still a meat robot? Called the story Hamsteakz. Hah!
>>288382798>phonetic alphabet.English isn't as bad as french when it comes to ignoring its phonetics but there are many languages who are a lot better at phonetics than english is for example italian, spanish, german, I think even polish, russian, thai, hindi.
>>288382798English is easy to learn when you speak another indoeuropean language especially another germanic lanugage but it's not as easy when you speak a completely different language. There are other languages which are easier for example indonesian. It's not easier than learning english if you speak a germanic language but it's a lot easier than english if you don't have the knowledge of a germanic language. Its grammar is easier than english grammar and its words are very phonetically.
>>288383619And my point was that your examples were all foreign words, not made-up words, and their pronunciation is not debated.
>>288378588Hello! Merry Christmas! You are dog!
>>288383944>no mention of Greek which all these languages borrowed their alphabets from
>>288382798>phonetic alphabet.uhhanyway, how easy or hard a language is to learn mostly boils down to how similar it is to your own language and how easy it is to come across material in said language in your day to day life
>>288384004Meant for >>288383906
>>288383953Sure, that's why I said it's an issue that even extends to foreign words. Their pronunciation isn't debated because we have the Japanese pronunciation. Another language may be unable to match the correct pronunciation 100% but only in English you can have people arguing about how their transcription is even read in the first place. I don't think they are just reading Latin incorrectly, they are just ignorant about the original pronunciation.
>>288384004greek stole phoenicianwhich stole sinaiticwhich is just garbled egyptian hieroglyphics
>>288384004The greek language changed a lot over the centuries and millenia like every other language also does change over time. Modern greek isn't the same as ancient greek. For example the letter beta became a letter called vita in modern greek, that's also why the cyrilic letters of b and v look very similar. The slavs borrowed both versions of the beta letter, how it was originally pronounced and how it was later pronounced in the middle ages.

>>288383297What is wrong with this narrator?
>>288383300>The only consonant that doesn't end in a vowel for them is NTechnically, there's also S but only when it comes to words ending in -す like korosu(殺す) ends up sounding like koros or taosu(倒す) ends up sounding like taos, then there are the keigo words ending in -ます or -です sounding like mas or des, instead of pronouncing them like masu or desu.
>>288382798>phonetic alphabetIt was originally but the spelling changed for no reason in the middle ages and now every word needs to be memorized as there are more exceptions than words that follow the rules.
>>288384888Now that I think about it, it doesn't need to end in -su, even tasukete, sistaa or mistaa don't have the vowel sound in the middle because they're -su

>>288385008The shi sound also sometimes becomes mute like in hajimemashite.
>>288385552*the i in the shi sound
>>288384985Other way around, pre standardization people wrote English phonetically but as spelling started to get formalized pronunciation continued to change leaving some words to phonetically represent pronunciation no longer in use.
>>288383143>if you knew enough to speak itHere's where anon finds out that listening and writing (and understanding) skills can vary a lot if you are not dedicating your efforts to formally learn the language. English is full of "idiosyncrasies" because it indiscrimantely loaned words with no transliteration, which can easily end up confusing if know no conventions from related languages. Why do you think kah-lou-kwi-al way of conveying pronounciation is this sort of pidgin-speak? Because you can't rely the spelling exclusively to get across whether "read" is supposed to be red or reed.Lack of gendering and grammatical cases do make English easier to spread neo-pronoun nonsense with, but in other areas. You can read """modern""" Latin properly after seeing like 6 rules it has, while you will run into English edge cases for a good while.
>>288385866>had to dig for a word and wound up with one that isn't even that hard to pronounce phonetically: colloquialit's still a broadly phonetic language, not every word needs to be mastered to become fluent let alone conversant.all the words i used in this post could be sounded out phonetically (even phonetic) with little difficulty.bottom line english has wide use in large part because it's so easy to pick up. japanese otoh had inscrutable little glyphs that all look the same and intense memorization, i honestly do not know how people learn it as adults. but there's a lot of aspies here so that probably helps.
>>288385305

>>288386253I don't know what sort of anglo slander you are shadowboxing against, but you are missing the forest for the trees while you're at it. Nobody is saying that English is some arcane indecipherable tongue from finno-korean hyperwar era. No shit you don't need a doctorate to hold a conversation, you don't need that anywhere.Using the retard-friendly spelling guide had absolutely nothing to do with how difficult it is read colloquial. It was just a goddman example of how people have to ACTUALLY describe pronounciation over text (when not using IPA). You know, like the whole jif VS gif thing, writing things differently to make sure you idea gets across. In contrast to languages with simpler rules and fewer edge cases.
