I've heard a few people say that Japanese people can't write good stories, and it made me reflect on my tastes in anime and manga as a whole.

What do you think? Are anime and manga as mediums only filled with low-brow, mediocre slop delivered for the purpose of filling up your precious, short time on this earth, or are there a few gems here and there that are genuinely remarkable works of fiction?
