It's only him 'sacrificing his ideals' because he'd been gaslit into thinking that a sacrifice is necessary when his normal 'try very hard even if you fail' would work fine.It gets laid out a lot more blatantly in 3rei/Oath Under Snow where him saving the one person he wants to actually has direct negative impact on the lives and safety of other people rather than there just being a threat out longer.
