what an incredible series from start to finish. i didn't enjoy the silliness with all the 7th division dudes too much but overall it was incredibly well made. a cultural marvel and all the education about the ainu was so fascinating
did they... you know...?

you can't convince me all the stuff with edogai wasn't fuckin retarded

I read it last year and went in knowing nothing about it beforehand. Luckily at the time the manga was already finished so no waiting on chapters etc..

Definitely in the top10 for me. I like stories like this where it slowly builds momentum and it's goal-centric with hijinks along the way.
Reminded me a bit of SBR as well.

i've heard a lot of good things about steel ball run but have never read/watched jojo's before and have never been too interested because of how flamboyantly silly it looks. would you still rec it?
>>
>>288416382
Of yeah, it really is an outstanding series.
I found the ending to be a bit rushed, but overall it was a great adventure story.
>>
>>288417109
I think you need a bit of Jojo in you to get the most out of it and to learn to roll with the punches on some of its dumber writing choices.
Noda will occasionally have a character act overly stupid or obstinate for a joke. Araki does that during serious storylines.
Steel Ball Run is a very 'Jojo' Jojo part with a lot of the series's quirks turned up pretty high.
>>
>>288417109
There are some things that make a bit more sense if you read previous Jojo's but honestly it's pretty bizarre as it is so you'll not somehow "know" more, just recognize references and homages.

I'd say you can easily read SBR without having read any of the previous ones.

i thought the ending was really well done for what it was, honestly. i did find it strange how abrupt the time skip was but at the same time, i don't think having a filler chapter in between with sugimoto recovering or something would have been that great. a nice, touching moment between sugimoto and asirpa and then a fly by of how all the remaining characters end up is honestly all we needed. i'm glad it was a happy ending and i think he stuck the landing beautifully

Poor man's gintama imo
It just wasn't super interesting nor was the drama as climactic as it could have been
It feels like a very solid series without many flaws though which makes it easy to say it's one's "top 10" without being poked at
>>
>>288417311
>Poor mans gintama
Whos the madao then ?

>>288417331
That's a good question I feel like there's many semi-madaos

2) they both feature the shinsengumi.
Your turn for 3).

It does have Katstura and Elizabeth
Otoshin and Tsukushima fill that niche out
7th division lacks parallels
You would think shinsengumi but gorilla and Tsurumi are nothing alike

Both stories happen because of Gaijin
Aliens for gintama and polish for Kamuy

In that case 50 shades of grey is grounded (in a good way, assuming you mean grounded as a compliment.)
>>
>>288416382
Have you seen Asirpa throughout the series? Even if they didn't, she will eventually tear that sisam naked and have her way with him
>>
>>288416382
> i didn't enjoy the silliness with all the 7th division dudes too much
you are gay, now read what I disliked about GK:
-manliest character gets an unfitting, gruesome dead at the hands of the biggest cuck: cuckishima, who gets to live unscathed, ushiyama's only sin and crime was being too fucking BASED
-we don't see shiraishi use the gold for someone else's good, in wilk's words the gold should be handed to someone with a selfless goal in mind, that's why he "gives it" to hijikata and thematically sugimoto was a good fit too since he only wanted it to help her osananajimi
-we don't see retar, chikapashi and everyone else in the epilogue

and despite any flaws anyone could point out it's still a 10/10
>>
>>288420113
>we don't see retar
we do see the wolf children at least
>>
>>288419934
Grounded just means realistic and authentic. It's something rooted in both possibility and natural emotion and arcs. Having mascot characters, especially of a BEAR, would undermine that. It's already borderline that Retar follows/saves Asirpa like that.

>>288420536
Yeah I was going to say that you literally have a wolf saving asirpa, having a mascot isn't really that crazy. I mean if you want to say "Realistic/authentic/rooted in possibility/natural emotion and arcs" then it's hard to justify all the gay fanservice imo. And I think it's kind of a disservice to treat "grounded=realistic" as a good thing by default, "authentic" sure, "grounded" too, but that's not quite the same thing as "realistic".
>inb4 it's realistic that men go to a sauna and that happens irl are you retarded
yes but it's about the presentation. this scene was clearly not trying to go "we are a realistic and authentic history manga and this scene was led up to by both natural high probability and natural emotion and arcs led up to this"
And these humorous fanservice scenes are a constant thing throughout the series so
I think it's a bit much to accept those and then say "a wolf mascot character? (when a wolf is already asirpa's buddy) how dare you"
>>
>>288420113
For me it's not a 10/10, but that's not because of flaws, I fundamentally disagree that flaws affect the score at all, well there are exceptions but in general the only thing that matters to me is just how good something gets, I don't think Golden Kamuy pushed past into mindbreaking levels of awesomeness for me, and iirc it was too stuck in all the circumstantial little details that weren't actually compelling (like which specific characters have to fight during an arc for the events to make sense or something? but that kind of thing doesn't really matter).
Anyway this is a good thread with a good OP post so I'm going to shut up now, I've been annoyingly confrontational this whole thread (like 10 posts are by me) and this is a good time to stop.
>>
>>288420566
The manga is very much grounded and the silly shit like the sauna scene or Edogai don't take away from that. That's just the author writing funny scenes or eccentric characters for humor (and those characters are still very serious when they need to be). The story is serious, the settings are very real and authentic, the survival element is harsh, characters go through natural and emotional/mature arcs, and everything is extremely well researched. Having a cute bear or wolf following the gang around as a tool for comedic relief and cuteness factor is just so diametrically opposed to what the manga is trying to do. Ryu is the closest thing to that and he's just a normal dog who acts like a normal dog. He's not a tool for jokes or for kids or moefags to latch onto, he's just a dog.
>>
>>288420683
Yeah, between all of these (if they're all you)
>not a saturday morning cartoon for 12 year olds
>wow you're right this is just like one piece
>characters go through natural and emotional/MATURE arcs
>a tool for jokes or for kids or moefags to latch onto
I'm really getting a vibe of "muh manga being gritty and mature... makes it good".
It's unfortunate, because there's a lot of good fiction out there, whether it's /a/ stuff or /lit/ stuff, that realizes that "maturity" and "seriousness" or "realism for the sake of realism" is nothing but a barrier and/or a crutch for many writers.

In addition, your post is basically

>the silly shit like the sauna scene or Edogai don't take away from that [because I said so]

>Having a cute bear or wolf following the gang around as a tool for comedic relief and cuteness factor is just so diametrically opposed to what the manga is trying to do [because I said so]

Besides, no one said he had to follow them around all the time, that's not necessary for a mascot character. He could just be around in the more comedic scenes.

Being unable to swallow disbelief is a huge weakness as an enjoyer of fiction, and I hope you can improve on your weaknesses in the future.
>>
>>288417236
It was also fun to see some awkward Japanese reactions to the happy ending descriptions because it very much didn't go that well for the Ainu IRL.
>>
>>288420683
>Having a cute bear or wolf following the gang around as a tool for comedic relief and cuteness factor is just so diametrically opposed to what the manga is trying to do
Besides, you're forgetting shit like the huge guy with a brick on his forehead who can barrel through walls, and the two master swordsmen who are (I presume to be) old as fuck and somehow are still top notch fighters.
And also
>the settings are very real and authentic
>Hijikata was killed near the Ippongi Kanmon (一本木関門) by a bullet that shattered his lower back
>Died June 20, 1869 (aged 34)
At some point you have to admit that some fun fictional things are a part of fun fiction.
>>
>>288420683
>Having a cute bear or wolf following the gang
Or how about having asirpa (what is she again 12? 14?) participating in serious fights and stuff, you have this cute loli with a bow caught up in this mess between war vets lol. If you can take that seriously then you can take a mascot character seriously.
>He's not a tool for jokes or for kids or moefags to latch onto
No one says a mascot character has to be that.
>for comedic relief and cuteness factor
No one says that has to be the only reason they're around.
>>
>>288420683
