I think as well in the upcoming chapters, we may see Kunishige find himself embroiled in a cycle of hatred and vengeance in the name of Chiaki. Both him and Shiba have just witnessed the massacre of their allies, and Kunishige is now hearing that Chiaki is going to be sacrificed to the Mikaboshi. To me, it feels very much like Hokazono is setting up Kunishige's creation of the blades to be a very personal reason of protecting Chiaki (at a time when Kunishige and Shiba are very emotionally involved in the conflict), rather than helping Japan win a war. And on a personal level, there's nothing wrong with that, but on a wider scale and in the retrospect of the entire story, Kunishige is creating the equivalent of WMDs and furthering a war only so that Chiaki can be saved, and I think the aftermath of the war and Malediction makes him realise that his actions during the war were not entirely correct, and he carries this guilt his whole life. I think it's also why Kunishige emphasizes to Chihiro to see the world with his own eyes, because Kunishige's learned how flawed his own perspective can be and is trying to motivate Chihiro to take a much more nuanced and fully-fledged view of Morality, the enchanted blades, and what helping people really looks like (which Chihiro himself has also had by meeting Sojo, Akemura, Yura, and Samura). This is even outlined at the end of part 1 with how Chihiro's worldview has changed, when he thinks of the new type of sword to forge, he thinks of all the new perspectives of these characters that he's learned.
