I remember the flip duel being really annoying to deal with in legacy of the duelist. Not so much his actual deck and more because you were supposed to use this lvl 1 xyz summon.

Probably because Yuma isn't that good to get a sidekick.
Previous protags had sidekicks because they were good at the game so other noobs like Joey and Syrus learned from them, while Yuma himself IS a noob.

I think in all the other shows duelists would always play monsters face up in defense mode.

Archetypes released the year Zexal came out were:

>Laval
>Steelswarm
>Vylon
Nordics and Laval obviously continuing from the synchro era.
None of the other archetypes actually use XYZ summons. Gishki is rituals, steelswarm is tributing, Vylon uses equip cards.
So the actual XYZ archetypes must have come out 2012 and later.
