>character speaks in kansai / osaka dialect>translated to a thick southern accent
It's past time to get over it.
Would you prefer something different?
>dubs
>>288454747I mean, you can't exactly dub a dialect, but you could very well do the accent.
if you complain about this then you don't actually know anything about Japan, like most complainers about most things on /a/
>>288454851It doesn't fit. A New York or Boston accent would be better.
It should unironically be a Boston accent. When non-Kansai Japanese people hear kansaiben they don't think of hillbillies, they think of owarai. The closest equivalent to an American accent (assuming you're using American VAs for the cast) that gives an impression of comedy would be Boston.
>>288454851I prefer if they just keep the subs in english since I can hear what accent she said just fine.>b-but the dub...Death to all dubfag!
>>288454851I generally don't watch dubs--certainly none from recent year--but I believe it would be more amusing if it were interpreted as jive.
>>288454931you don't even have proper cultural familiarity with the US either why are Mexicans watching English dubs? you'd be better off watching native English programming if you want to learn English
Why is kansai-ben so goddamn rare?
>>288454976Describe to me what you think the Osakan stereotype in Japan is. Remember, "rural" is not one of them.
>>288454997the farms are in the Midwest not the South, you'd think Mexicans would know this, unless you're that German schizo, in which case isn't it past your bedtime?
>>288455044The Southern United States is commonly understood to be rural with a population density outside of a few urban centers like Atlanta very similar to that of the Midwest. That is why the Southern Accent is often called a 'hick' accent. Where 'hicks' were a certain type of stereotypical moron from the countryside. You don't know anything about Japan, nor do you know anything about America. What do you imagine Osaka/Kansai to be like and what do you imagine somewhere like Mississipi to be like?

How do dubfags even know what kansaiben is aside from some vague "what gets translated into southern burger in my dubs"?

>>288455865Jap accents are easy to tell apart. They have just as many different accents and dialectd as Americans do.
It's fair, because a lot of places in the world usually have a main, standard accent, a secondary other accent, then a whole lot of little, peculiar dialects associated with cities or smaller regions. In Japan, you have the main Tokyo accent, the seconday Kansai/westen accent, then a whole lot of little regional dialects like Hiroshima-ben, Hakata-ben, Akita-ben etc. That's kind of how America has the main general American accent, the secondary southern accent, and a whole lot of regional accents like New England, Brooklyn, Californian etc.Same with Britain. Main: Standard London. Secondary: Northern/Mancunian, then little regional dialects like Sommerset, Geordie, Scouse etc.Trying to portray a big, overarching secondary main dialect of a language, deep south works for kansai
>>288455966What, films like Sling Blade? Or Deliverance? Or to Kill a Mockingbird? Fuck, even Forrest Gump?Films where the natives are depicted as often very rural, uneducated or folksy (depending on the tone) compared to city slickers, and nothing at all like Osaka or Kansai?
>>288456147yep I totally believe you've seen any of those movies and haven't just been ERPing as one of the keions since high school
>>288456224>anon claimed to watch some of the most popular films of the last 50 years>he must be lyingI also watched this obscure cult classic called Jurassic Park. Its about dinosaurs, you might not have heard about it.

I don't care about dubs, but I wish there were more Kansai-ben characters in general. I like the sound of it, and it's good practice. They seem to have become less common.>>288456142Not disagreeing, but it's worth pointing out there are differences within Kansai-ben as well. Osaka's accent isn't that much like, say, Kagenui from Monogatari (who has a Kyoto accent).
I've always preferred the idea of it being done with a cockney accent. No I don't think it's more appropriate, nor do I care as I don't watch dubs, I just think the cockney accent would be funnier.
>>288456147>forrest gump>went college (plus joined NASA and was an astronaut in the book)>uneducatedHe might have been retarded, but he wasn’t uneducated
>>288454747How would you translate it accurately in something such as manga or light novels?
>>288455950Yeah, those activities sound more pleasant than listening to dubs.
>>288456034Yeah, but dubfags won't have heard any.
>>288454959Boston is not the Official Comedy Accent in American culture. You're thinking of this >>288454974
>That pink girl in OnK that talks like Foghorn Leghorn in the dub for some reason
>>288454747Imagine unironically listening to >EN dubslike EVER in anime
the stereotype of kansai region people is that they're funny and good with money. I think you can understand why the american version of that doesn't make it into dubs.
>>288455198>a guywoah, stop the presses, some guy said a thing, let's all have a listen to this literally who, probably N3 at best guy
>>288455865It's literally just because of Osaka
>>288456142The associations and connotations between the accents are totally different though
>>288460685Oy gevalt!
>>288454747this is because most of the American dubbing industry is based in and around Dallas, so they're just using the local dialect to distinguish it from "middle American" they use for normal characters. There was no deeper meaning to it beyond "this character sounds different, so I'll use the accent my buddy from grade school had because it's easy for me to do"
>watching dubsYou already failed at first base
Is there really any point in bothering to translate an "accent" when at its best you'll literally only be able to get across that "this character speaks with an accent" and will never accurately convey what the original audience assumes about a character from their accent without covering the screen with TL notes
>>288454851Italian American.

>>288454997>culturally distinct from "standard" Tokyo and proud of it in spite of being considered "lesser">familiar to the point of being obnoxious>unsophisticated and unseriousThis all maps very well on Texan stereotypes.
>>288454980>Why is kansai-ben so goddamn rare? It's too powerful, it can singlehandedly turn a girl into best girl
>>288454747its fine because southern accents are cute
Osaka people are not rednecks and hillbillies, that part of central Japan has been the capital for ages and Tokyo was only the capital for like 100+ years. To any real weeb who has made pilgrimage you'd also realize that Osaka/Kyoto folks are far more friendlier and positive than doomer and isolated Tokyo folks and aren't flat out /pol/ boomers who want gaijin go homu like real rural hicks.
>>288465648You are missing the urban aspect.
>>288466957>and aren't flat out /pol/ boomers who want gaijin go homu like real rural hicks. So you're saying they're the ones responsible for the state of current Japan?
>>288467048Texas has multiple large metropolitan areas and has been growing even more economically. Austin, Houston, El Paso, and the Dallas-Fort Worth metro are all recognizable urban centers and will only really become more so as the state continues to attract businesses. But things like the exact stereotypes is secondary. The most important thing, in my opinion, that Kansai-ben is meant to imply is that it's "the second largest culture, distinctly its own thing and tends to be viewed unfavorably by the mainstream culture."If you assume California dialect for Tokyo, this doesn't apply to New York as the two states are culturally and politically monolithic. You take the stereotypical Bostoner and drop him into LA and he wouldn't stand out as coming from a different culture the same way the stereotypical Osakan being dropped in Tokyo (or the stereotypical Texan being dropped in LA) would.
>>288456024I can't be the only one who found him obnoxious as fuck when I watched KLK for the first time, right? The whiplash I got when I found out /a/ loved him was... something, that's for sure.
>>288454747Translated?Do you mean the subs? Cuz otherwise there is no reason to ever watch dubs.
>>288456628>They seem to have become less commonBecause Kyoto is now China and India land, there are so many foreigners there.

>>288454747As one anon mentioned long ago, there needs to be actual New Englander and Pennsylvanian accents used in translations for hicks. The FFs in words are cool.
>>288454980Believe me, Kansai-ben is relatively common compared to some like Hokkaido-ben, Akita-ben or Kyushu-ben.
>>288468517You can make decisions about this as soon as England starts making its own dubs or even translations instead of just leeching off US translations while complaining there's not enough u's in words and everyone doesn't sound like a fag.
>>288469537tosa-ben my beloved
>>288468517How dumb can you be? Obviously country dialects are a literal ocean apart compared to regional accents. Jesus you are dumb.

>>288454747Clearly they should dub it as AAVE
>>288469638Based. Fuck em Englands.
>>288467621all those places like DFW are much more endless suburban hell sprawl than proper "urban centres".and a cartoonishly stereotypical east coaster (Boston, Philly, New Yorker, cheesehead, wherever) is going to stand out just as much if not more in LA than one from Austin or Houston would.
