It took until 2017 for season 3 which tried to compress too many books into 26 episodes resulting in a mess of cut content and rushed pacing. That was the last season of the main series. The novel series is now 38 books ahead of the anime with only 23 adapted and no new season on the horizon.The spin off Railgun faired better with 3 seasons (2009, 2013, 2020), still a big gap but all of them are higher quality than Index and a new season coming next year. The 12 episode Accelerator spin-off in 2019 was mediocre. We have an ITEM spin-off coming later this year, quality unknown.The manga doesn't fair much better. Everything is released on a monthly schedule... for a fast paced Shonen. The Index manga was been running since 2007 and is about 19/62 novels in (3 were skipped). The popular Railgun spinoff manga ended on a 5 year long flashback arc because the artist wanted to move on. The Accelerator manga failed miserably. The ITEM manga has been on hiatus for a year. The Mental Out manga has been... okay.The books are split into 3 series. OT (24 novels), NT (23 novels) and GT (15 novels ongoing) but none of the visual media has passed OT including the many spinoffs. It feels like they lost their chance to ever reasonably catch up to the series, only now just coming back with anime after 6 years(9 since Index) and it is more spin-offs. There is clearly no real plan.

But because a Divine Spirit cannot normally materialise as a Servant (barring a variety of exceptions because the mushroom can't stick to a rule to save his life), a living human was necessary to serve as the container. So the ritual that the temple used searched the timeline for a living person connected to the Grail, and who would be able to match Ishtar's "wavelength". The person they found was Rin, so they snatched her body from Fuyuki in one timeline and shoved Ishtar into her. The two beings (Rin and Ishtar) merged, making for an Ishtar that is 70% Ishtar and 30% Rin in terms of personality.Normally Ishtar is queen bitch of the heavens, but because Rin is so good-hearted and kind, her influence drastically modulates and tempers Ishtar's worst impulses, so she ends up kinder. At the same time, Rin also refocuses Ishtar's abilities - Ishtar normally would have powerful charm and seduction abilities, but because of Rin it is only a generic Charisma effect (still enough to rule a country as a beloved queen though) and Ishtar can no longer deploy her divine energy in just "anything" but can only store it in gems. Both effects of Rin's personality.There is also Ereshkigal, because if Ishtar is summoned then Ereshkigal is chain-summoned with her, but that's another thing. It also makes for a great joke because as far as Master-Servant compatibility is concerned, Rin and Gilgamesh actually have the highest possible compatibility. Which is hilarious because Gil hates Ishtar.
