Is Hiroshi Hamasaki the most underrated anime director? I never see him get credited for making 2 very good classics, and they hardly get mentioned together.
>>
It's quite interesting watching S:G0 after and feeling just how much his prescense as the director is missed in that show. The oppressive atmosphere he brought to that adaptation of the first VN makes it one of the best VN adaptations alone. It really sells that feeling of them constantly being watched even better than the VN had.
>>
>>288463681
With those two I'd put him above Tomino and Kon.
>>
Didn't he also to an AoT episode or two?
>>
>>288463681
>2 boring shows
He's exactly as renowned as he deserves to be.
>>
>>288463785
Tomino hasn't made anything decent in decades.
>>
>>288463681
Is Texhnolyze worth watching? Is it better or worse than S;G?
>>
>>288463881
It's one of my favorite shows. The first episode in haunting. I didn't care for Steins;Gate at all.
>>
>>288463681
I'd put him high tier, though not quite at the top with most of the truly renowned directors
>>
>>288463881
Totally worth the watch, arguably better than steins
>>
>>288463881
>spoiler
It doesn't even come close to SG in quality. It's more of a cult hit than anything else.
>>
>>288463681
he completely ruined his legacy with the awful Blade of the Immortal remake
>>
>>288463681
So does he exclusively do slow paced episodes and anime or what
>>
>>288463681
Nobody knows who that is. Im 100% sure he doesn't want annoying faggots like you to bother him either.
>>
>>288463681
Both of those anime are incredibly poorly paced and overly static in their direction. Even the SnK episode he directed had the same issue.
>>
>>288463681
>they hardly get mentioned together.
Steins Gate is for normalfaggots and Tex is for pretentious fags, of course they are not mentioned in the same sentence
>>
>>288463681
Never heard of him even after watching anime for decades.
>>
>>288463681
He's based for Texh at least, S;G kind of sucked but oh well.
>>
>>288463681
He's a great director but moreso underrated as an animator. He was Yoshiaki Kawajiri's right hand man for a lot of his movies and also he basically solo animated the climax to Metropolis which is pretty cool.
>>
>>288464333
Understandable but you can see how distinctive he is after seeing what he worked on, no?
>>
>>288463785
Kon's filmography mogs him if the anime in the OP are the best that he has.
>>
>>288463720
I think the VN still captures that feeling and atmosphere of paranoia better.
>>
>>288463785
Kon is way better, crazy take
>>
>>288463681
I couldn't get past episode 5 of Texhnolyze. The constant panting and breathing filtered me.
>>
>>288463681
Neither of those are popular enough for him to become a big name.
>>
>>288463881
Yes, it's a way better anime than S;G in my opinion.
>>
>>288463681
If he's so good, where are the naked children? Any anime without pedophilia is complete onions garbage.
>>
>>288465359
S;G was hugely popular.
>>
>>288463681
No wonder the Steins;Gate anime was so much better than the VN.

>S:G0
One of the worst adaptations I've ever seen, it was obvious they had zero budget. The scene where Suzuha's mother dies was laughable because of how badly animated it was.
>>
>>288466003
Even writing wise S;G 0 is a big mess. I can't help but think that was the point of the series' decline.
>>
>>288463785
Same.
>>
>>288464320
Yes and the last four episodes in particular are god-tier. Ignore the people who slap the "pretentious" label on it, they're brown MALtards who are too embarrassed to admit that they don't have the temperament to enjoy something slow and atmospheric.
>>
>>288466422
Meant for
>>288463881
lmao
>>
>>288466422
>and the last four episodes in particular are god-tier
You're doing a better job of describing SG than Texhnolyze.
>>
>>288463681
>Hiroshi Hamasaki
Who?
>>
>>288463681
Just from those two anime I know he's a hack.
>>
>>288466422
>enjoy something slow and atmospheric.
I dunno man, people use the same argument for games
>just play through the bad parts to get to the good
Why not just be honest and admit that the first half of Texhnolyze is horribly paced and that the hamfisted attempt of "show not tell" storytelling came off as incredibly pretentious?
>>
>>288463681
He also directed the Shigurui anime which although incomplete was also very competent and his style was again evident.
>>288467067
Nta bu anyone who uses pretentious as criticism of any media can easily be dismessed as a young underage brown retard

>>288463881
Texhnolyze isn't similar to Steins;Gate at all to compare them..
It probably has the greatest atmosphere in any anime I've ever seen and it's one of the most nihilistic and bleakest pieces of media I've ever watched.
>>
none of you are pure. all of you are arguing in bad faith
>>
>>288463681
I still haven't watched tex
>>
>>288463681
Steins;Gate is genuine garbage, not something to be lauded for.

Well I like both, but I like S:G a bit more, but I'm also an huge ABe fan, I still think that Lain and Haibane are better than tex
>>
>>288463814
Yes but iirc it was one of the Final Season slop ones
>>
>>288463681
lol I hate both of these shows. I had no idea they were from the same guy
>>
>>288464198
Yes.
>>
>>288463681
I dropped Steins;Gate back when I tried watching it, not impressed with it or his style.
>>
>>288463681
Weird, I never would've associated these 2 anime with each other.
>>
>>288463681
Both are vastly superior to the entirety of anime output this decade
>>
>>288470274
Low bar
>>
>>288470274
Frieren is better than both and I'm not being ironic.
>>
>>288463681
Replace Steins Gate with Shigurui. Steins Hate is just pretentious haremshit
>>
>>288463681
Texhnolyze is garbage and Steins Gate is a meme. This dude is genuinely a shitter that looked like an amateur film student when directing Tex and you're a tard that most likely has never even heard of half the greats of the old guard which were overshadowed by the big names everyone knows.
>>
>>288463881
It's shit just like S;G.
>>
>>288466422
There are plenty of great slow and atmospheric anime. Texhnolyze is just not one of them, it's fucking awful in comparison to something like Night on the Galactic Railroad.
Also pretentiousness exists and it's a much less retarded to call it out as criticism than calling someone brown.
>>
>>288467322
For me it's Mayuri
>>
>>288463681
Hiroshi Hamasaki only co-directed S;G. A more appropriate example would be Shigurui, that one has the exact same feel as Texh.
>>
>>288472081
Yeah but I doubt it was the guy that would go on to direct Rerided that was responsible for all the interesting stylistic choices in S;G. You can tell all of Hamasaki's trademarks from a mile away
>>
>>288463881
It is better than that lowbrow normalfag slop, yes.
>>
>>288471271
>and I'm not being ironic
You ought to be though.
>>
>>288463681
I'm being generous when I say that both of those series are mediocre.
>>
>entire thread bar the very first reply is just posts giving their drive-by opinions without elaborating and then moving on
Utterly useless thread. /a/ is so shit nowadays.
>>
>>288473075
4chan in general has become by and large worthless ever since the /v/ermin rot took hold. Now no one has any opinions on anything, no thoughts, no beliefs, no nothing. It's just a cesspool of straw contrarians trying to get each other mad and vice signaling to appear tough and """based"""
>>
>>288473075
Give us your elaborated opinion then
>>
>>288473075
Well that's because the average poster here is a layman. It's always been like that but even more so these days. Hardly anyone that posts here is knowledgeable enough about directing in anime or animation in general to have a well thought out discussion so you just get endless "nah its shit" "nah its good" "nah its mediocre" posts. No point on trying to press them because they won't be able to give you anything interesting to work with.
>>
>>288473075
You could fix this by contributing yourself. I doubt you will though.
>>
I dropped Steins;Gate in 6 episodes. I think the only thing I liked about it was the science aesthetic but it only had pretentions of being about anything sciencey.
>>
>>288473075
That's what you get with a retarded OP.
>>
God , Steins haters on this board genuinely need to be killed
Not even being ironic or whatever. You're all extremely fucking stupid. Also, nobody asked
>>
You don't appear intelligent for shit talking highly rated stuff.. especially with the low brow way you speak when you """criticize""" it
>>
>>288463681
>they hardly get mentioned together.
The reason why is because most people only have the capacity to understand the plot of something and nothing further. Watching even the first few minutes of the first episode of S;G (which I'm pretty sure he storyboarded/episode directed) you are hit over the head with so many Hamasaki directorial trademarks like the extremely harsh white lighting to convey an oppressive atmosphere, I'm pretty sure there's even a dragonfly in there which he loves to put in everything he works on for some reason. If you had seen Texhnolyze before watching S;G and weren't able to instantly connect that it's the same director that just shows how little someone pays attention to the visual part of this audio-visual medium. It's a shame but that's how most people are.
>>
>>288473966
Highly rated... by teens online? Woah
>>
>>288473483
Sorry but when your main character is wearing a labcoat I kind of expected him to be a bit more than just a drooling retard.
>>
>>288463881
Incomparable. No Akihabara weeb stuff, no waifus, no love story. Just pure fucking death.
>>
so all the characters were trying to stave off extinction in their own ways? What was Yoshii trying to accomplish exactly?
>>
>>288474926
You're a fucking dumbass.
>>
>>288475386
There's two solid interpretations. You could either see him as this savior coming down with the goal of preventing the people of lukuss from stagnant like the theonormals had become which in itself is a type of extinction. From his perspective the oregano and class were leading people to that stagnation.
Or you could see him in a more selfish light growing sick of the boredom he experienced on the surface and wanting to experience a spectacle for himself using the previous more virtuous reasoning as an excuse.
The show doesnt really spell out which it is, I always leant more towards the former but there is a lot of support for the reading of the latter. It could also be a mix of both.
>>
>>288473483
So am I supposed to force myself to like Steins;Gate just because you say so? I genuinely gave the show 3 chances because of posters like you and each attempt only frustrated me more.
>>
>>288473075
Why is everyone itt acting like he's the main writer for these shows is what I'm thinking
>>
>>288476025
Because the subhumans see steins and feel the need to give their unsolicited opinion that nobody on earth respects
>>
Why have there been so many S;G threads lately?

S;G 0 was really bad, hopefully he wasn't also on that one.
>>
>>288463681
Judging by this thread he's extremely overrated because good directors don't get more than 12 replies
>>
>>288463881
Texh is slow paced but good. You should give it a shot.
>>
>>288463681
Neither of those shows have good direction, otherwise there wouldn't be so many people talking about dropping those anime early on.
>>
>>288463881
You have to be patient with texhnolyze but it's worth it. far superior to steins which is just another time travel slop.

Nobody's ever heard of him so sure he's probably underrated a bit. Wouldn't put him among the greats though.
