It's just the final product of a director that realized he was completely disillusioned with the franchise he helped creating. I'll never understand why Anno even greenlit the rebuilds to begin with, why the constant change of direction and why the absolute bizarre decision to end it with a much shallower ending from the original (from 'fix yourself and understand how you relate to the world' to 'lol your obsession with eva ruined your life, go touch grass)
