A cliche but powerful ending, like they finally confess and start to date, BUT... the last obstacle of bullshit drama remains in the way. They overcome it, smash, are interrogated at school all embarrassed and the camera zooms out of the building with some final words wrapping things up. Nope, can't have that. Must have artificially prolonged slop. There's a reason most good romcoms end with the confession or kiss. And that's because they're hard carried by the whole dynamic, the tension and suspense of when's it gonna happen and how's it gonna happen. Everything else is filler. The lower engagement illustrates my point perfectly.
