pardon me for the asinine question, but did any of you actually watch NGE for the first time right around the age of 14? i was on spring break in middle school and a friend recommended it to me, enjoyed it quite a lot (which is unusual since i hadn't watched anime prior). admittedly it isn't as good to me now as it was a decade ago, but i do feel that being the same age as the pilots was the ideal way of experiencing it. most people i've talked to only saw it in high school or college.

I enjoyed it immensely at the time and liked the entire main cast, sentiments that have only grown as I rewatch it again and again as an adult. I appreciate the adult cast and their focus episodes in the first half of the show even more now after having been fascinated with them as classic sci-fi plots as a teenager. I think the worldbuilding (and I don't mean alien eggs and judeo-gnostic metaphysics) is also a lot more interesting as an adult. Kaji should be an icon if anyone had real taste. I distinctly remember going to the back of my science teacher's homeroom to read what the ancient textbooks with dust on them said about seas of dirac in my freshman year. NGE was instrumental in the progression of my chuunibyou; the summer before senior year I went to Japan and sang Cruel Angel's Thesis at a karaoke booth in our hotel basement.I used lines from a Shinji-Asuka fanfic I read on a tiny screen pre-smart phone cell phone on my first (bipolar) gf. In that sense, it probably is an anime that has special value for autistic teenagers trying to overcome the hedgehog's dilemma.
