Sci-fi isn't toally dead, it's just lost its luster because people have (for the most part, rationally) lost a lot of hope for technology and the future it's supposed to create. Much of the sci-fi future is already here and it's simultaneously dystopian and more banal than any of the dystopian stories, let alone the optimistic ones.
