I think there should be an anime/manga that inverts the bland everyman protagonist trope by giving the main cast distinct personalities and letting the side characters be the blank slates designed for self-insertion/projection.That way, both crowds are satisfied. Non-self inserters get actual characters to follow and get invested in, and self inserters get a larger selection to pick from instead of funneled into a single one-size-fits-all-MC.The only obstacle to this is most self-inserters want to be the center of the universe and refuse to self-insert as anyone who's not the main characters.
