I think there should be an anime/manga that inverts the bland everyman protagonist trope by giving the main cast distinct personalities and letting the side characters be the blank slates designed for self-insertion/projection.

That way, both crowds are satisfied. Non-self inserters get actual characters to follow and get invested in, and self inserters get a larger selection to pick from instead of funneled into a single one-size-fits-all-MC.

The only obstacle to this is most self-inserters want to be the center of the universe and refuse to self-insert as anyone who's not the main characters.

Maybe you need to expand the genre’s you read? There’s plenty of anime I’ve watched and read that have side characters that make you care about them.
