Why do anime originals always shit the bed at the second half?

because you only watch the ones tiktok tells you to watch

Ending a story well is always more difficult than staring one. At the start, all you need is an interesting premise to hook the audience and some narrative threads/characters they can imagine being interesting down the line. The start is about making promises. Actually paying off those promises is much harder. Anime is not unique in this, JJ Abrams has made a career about of his mystery box bullshit where he's made a science out of selling the idea of a good story to audiences without actually knowing any of the answers behind his own mysteries because he genuinely doesn't think that part is important.

Anime originals that hook people in the first half still run into the problem of "but is the ending good?" like any other story, but with the additional complication that its not at all uncommon for the script to still be a work in progress as the show unfolds. At the time they start the show, many original anime have at best a vague idea of how it will end, which means that its very difficult to actually have everything tie up in a satisfactory fashion because there's no opportunity to edit or refine the story on a holistic level, only an episodic one. You can't go back and cut out a plot thread you ended up not using because you've already animated and released that part, its no longer just a draft you can edit as you need.

Anime originals are, in addition, often the work of a writer or director or sometimes even a whole studio trying to get their name out, which means this could be their first project where they have creative control. They might have worked on someone else's project before, but there is a big difference between that and being in the drivers seat yourself, and not seeing the signs that you are fucking up until its too late.

All of this is how you end up with disasters like Wonder Egg Priority: very strong start, but as the show neared its conclusion it became obvious that they had no idea they needed to wrap it up, much less how.

SSSS Gridman
SSSS Dynazenon
Space Patrol Luluco

All have solid endings. Trigger is just that good.

It is worth pointing out that Frannx, while a bumpy ride, was still mostly good while Trigger was involved and it really went to shit after Trigger left the production late in the second half due to "creative differences" with Nishigori. It seems like Trigger might have been paving over Nishigori's worst ideas and holding the project quality together, but as they got closer to the ending the infighting became more intense and Trigger bailed because they couldn't salvage this.

DTB has a pretty decent second half
>>
>>288498158
It's not exactly a "second half" issue. The problem is they never had any idea what the fuck they were doing in the first place. It works in the beginning when everything is still a a secret and the audience is hooked with all the mysterybait, but once they approach the end they have start giving answers and tying everything together. And that's when it becomes apparent they had no plan and they just make up some bullshit on the spot and the whole thing crumbles.

You actually need a good writer to finish well.

There are easier ways to say that you know nothing about the production processes of the anime industry.
